Kpop has a few factors that make their image in the west often bad: 1) Pop music isn't taken as seriously in the west because it's often seen as a "lesser" genre; let's be real, Britney Spears could write the most nuance, beautiful lyrics and she'd never get praised for it because of her image as a "Pop Princess" 2) Language Barrier: western people don't know how to properly interview those who don't speak English; I was actually pleasently surprised with some of BTS's 2018 interviews because they utilized things such as in-ear translators and a professional translator 3) Female fandom: artists with a (seemingly) pre-dominant female fandom are never taken as seriously as those with male fandoms; you wouldn't see Eminem, Drake, or Post Malone getting asked half the sh*t Kpop artists are 4) Kpop artists sometimes prioritize exposure over quality; this is a double-edged sword; on one hand it creates some of the cringiest moments, but on the other hand, because of the internet, people can express their dislike for certain interviewers/questions; this fan feedback has actually helped the interviews become better and have forced (some) of the hosts/interviewers to be more careful with how they treat these artists I would also just like to add quickly that you can like them or dislike them, but I'm really glad a group like BTS, who has a very large discography and is heavily involved in their music-making process was the one to really grow in the west and set a precedent for interviewers. Because they are able to talk about their music and message, even if initial interviews weren't always good, it DID change the second round of interviews for the better. Plus, that's what a lot of their fans demanded to hear about, and let people know in the comments section/Twitter that they were tired of the "Celeb crush" type questions. (Now if only we could get rid of the "collaborate" questions; I am THIS CLOSE to committing mass murder after hearing that question so many times.) Thanks for the video! :D

A good example of the Western validation point is Twice. Their market is Asia, specifically Korea and Japan. And they are undoubtedly the biggest girl group in Kpop right now. Yet I highly doubt any of these interviewers have even heard of them.

It will be pretty hard for them to make it big in the west cause many people in the west dont like the cute concept and arent used too it
@lemons2300
@lemons2300 5 лет назад
Twice's target market is without a doubt the eastern audiences. Groups like BTS and whatever group's in YG likes to see beyond the East, and their concepts generally appeal more to the western audiences, yet at the same time also appealing to eastern audiences because the East also takes an interest to western entertainment unlike the majority of western audiences who's mostly only heard of BTS and Psy and not much else. Groups that will always have the least appeal in the West are girl groups that do cute or girly concepts, and Twice basically belongs to that category (although they still seem more mature than Gfriend, Oh My Girl, etc.). Imo I think it's more important for an idol group to have a good foundation in one's own country.
@mellowyellow6729
@mellowyellow6729 5 лет назад
A big reason that everyone is pointing out is that their music is catered more towards Asian audiences, but I think another reason could be that Twice doesn’t have an English speaking representative, so if they were to go to the west they would need a translator.
@bubblegumcherry2209

@mellowyellow6729 5 лет назад
@@bubblegumcherry2209 I agree, Twice doesn't need Western validation and I don't think that's what the people replying are trying to say. Kudos. A good example of a more "Western" interview is iHeart Radio with Red Velvet. It was a great example of a damn good interview. Ones that don't make you cringe because the reporters don't do their homework or whatever. I totally totally agree with them not needing western validation. Though, as someone who is in North America, it is great being able to see them in concert for example. Great video even if I don't entirely agree with the clout comment. I think if it gets a group's name out there and they're being kind about the music and artists, there's absolutely no harm. We aren't elitist fans either, or shouldn't be. I think that’s true everywhere though. If you are going to a festival or whatever you will not know every group performing and will often just go to have fun and watch a few bands, while you’re there you can decide to watch a few bands that you don’t know because they sound good, and to just enjoy the music without knowing much about the band themselves. I think people should be allowed to listen to music and go to performances even when they aren’t part of the fanbase or don’t know the artist. And look, if they really enjoy it they most likely will research the group later, so I don’t have a problem with that myself. It’s good to try new things and sample different genres, and if it’s not your thing it’s not your thing. If you never remember it again, that’s fine, and if you do, well than that’s great. That’s just my opinion though,but I do believe you shouldn’t *have* to be passionate about a group or artist to go to a concert, as long as you enjoy the music and have a good time.

Personally, I think the idea of kpop in the west just, to some up, misplaced. Now, don't get me wrong, I know there are plenty of western kpop fans, and that's FANTASTIC, but I'm pretty sure most of us wouldn't mind only getting our k-content from SK. In the US, the artists feel like they have to speak English, the music is so disregarded (as you said) like some craze with no real meaning, and basically all results of kpop being promoted in the west (mostly America) is just CRINGE. It's cringey when these reaction channels put on the fakest smiles and try to shove their "newly found love of kpop" down everyone's throats. it's cringey when non-kpop fans talk about kpop but only mention BTS. It's cringey when interviewers are so used to the American industry that they can't do any research on anything and be actual journalists. And, it's cringey when all of these new kpop fans join the fandom, hating on any/all girl groups without a girl crush concept, only wanting try-hard "cool" kpop songs, no matter how forced, and glorifying anything their fave does just to get validation from everyone else. Thank you for coming to my TED-Talk.

Also, there has been some people out there who DO NOT EVEN LISTEN TO A GROUP'S MUSIC BUT WILL STILL BUY TICKETS TO THEIR CONCERTS. I am okay with people buying tickets, BUT I AM NOT OKAY WITH PEOPLE WHO BUYS TICKETS JUST TO RESELL THEM AT INSANELY HIGH PRICES. Literally BP tickets sold out and are being sold for $400 to $1500. Like people in the West are taking advantage of KPOP fans so hard, and it is getting so annoying. You can even see it in the KCON prices for concert tickets steadily rising every year too (DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED WITH PRICES OF HIGH TOUCH AT THESE CONCERTS it likes literally double of a P2 ticket most of the time). Kpop is definitely taken as a joke in US. They don't consider them as artists because the idols rarely have any say in their music. So it's considered as inauthentic and the artists are thought of as puppets. BTS gained respect bcoz they produce and write their songs. Only when they proved that they are here to stay did the interviewers start asking them serious questions. BB kpop columnists rarely do research before writing an article. Jeff is one of those people who say kpop is popular in US. But I don't think it is. Most Kpop reaction videos are cringey. It's obvious that they are only looking for likes and views.

I’d categorize him with the JREs and SydtheKids and JessLyfes of the world, he’s just newer to the scene than them. His friends are definitely clout chasers, but he added them trying to get them into kpop. I’m in a discord server with him and we all talk about kpop behind the scenes, too, and he’s always talking about the new groups he’s finding and which ones he likes or what he thought, often stuff he just sought out on his own and doesn’t react to on his channel. 5:25 I was still pretty triggered by this apology because they felt NCT needed to get on the level with Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and Justin Bieber to be well known (it would have been even worst if BTS was in that list, and would have probably started a fan war TBH). Like why is this the level that NCT needs to compare themselves to to indicate that they have made it in this world. Like NCT should just be able to be NCT. Like I am probably not wording my frustration properly with the statement that KIDDNATION released regarding the incident, but it really did just trigger me.

Same. That apology was so fake and like it was written by a kid "sorry I messed up but honestly I'm not really sorry and I don't care about them at all". It wasn't just the fact that NCT and Lay were disrespected as artist and their work, but also the comments on that radio were xenophobic af. They have worked really hard and deserve respect.

You’re entitled to feel how you want about people reacting to k-pop videos for clout.. I personally don’t think it’s that big of a deal because there are worst things people could do for views and engagement lol. But idk it kinda rubbed me the wrong way when when you showed the video of the black reactors and made a point about how they overuse stan twitter language when 1) k-pop/hip hop/rap/r&b is a derivative of black culture and 2) the vast majority of ‘stan twitter lingo’ is made up of words/phrases/memes created by black people, specifically black women and the black lgbt+ community

I agree but honestly i feel like all these performances, cringe interviews and award shows will help k pop be more normalized here and taken seriously later on, people here tend to kind of push it aside because it’s different and new (and ig the unknown is scary) like I noticed that when bts was on the Grammys, they actually got questions about upcoming music, I even saw one interviewer ask them about their thoughts on txt, the Grammys still feel super clout chasey tho but bts still got exposure and it really felt like they were actually taken seriously for once,it takes small steps.....also, If they perform at the bbmas again, I really hope they get nominated music wise this time 😤

It took BTS almost 3 years to start get treated seriously from US media. This is such a lesson to other kpop groups as well. If you want to break into US, be patient and put out really good music and content to the point people cant no longer treat you as just fad. So, this apply to the fans as well. Be patient and educate those people calmly about your faves. If your faves meant to be successful, its gonna be successful.

I agree more or less with your last point but some people still use the term "western validation" incorrectly and instead of using it for people who deliberately try to push into the Western market to gain recognition by Western people, they use it to bash artists who are able to get recognition in the West through organic success and hard work. Take BTS, for example. When they started the Love Yourself Series, everybody was trying to discredit their music and say that they were catering to Western audiences with title tracks like DNA, when A) They've been making EDM title tracks and b-sides long before DNA existed, and B) The only reason why it got so much attention in the West is because the fans liked it so much and so we managed to get the album charting on the Billboard 200 without even trying to do so. Like most interviewers, reporters, and journalists say, the steep rise of BTS over the last 2 years was truly due to fan labor. They themselves did not change. They just made music as usual and we supported it. Although because of the rise in demand for Kpop, like you said, many companies are trying too hard to push their groups into the West, and it's gotten to the point where the general public has had enough. Honestly, if a group is good, then the music will speak for itself and companies won't HAVE to push them into the West. The fans would do that for them.

He is always honest and says when he dislikes a song and never overreacts! His reactions are always genuine and his viewers know and appreciate that. And he also reacts to a lot of old stuff! He even stated that he doesn't want to be the "basic kpop reactor". If you actually took some time to check out his channel you could truly see how he genuinely wants to understand korean culture. I mostly agree with everything your saying. This was overall a very well constructed video. I don't think bts needs western validation. but with the goals that they set for themselves like Grammys ect.. that comes with some sort of validation from America. Also, we cannot forget that a big part of BTS's fanbase is international. So yes they don't need to come here, but I do think it is very important. Almost as important as going to visit fans in Korea. Overall fans are fans and we all have helped them in some sort of way no matter where we come from. So no they aren't forced to come here. But I do think it is a good idea for them to keep coming/promoting. Because tbh international fans have helped in so many ways like voting them into places that they weren't even invited to, streaming their videos all day, making major American hashtags. etc.

Honestly, unless a group has an English speaking member they shouldn't really bother with interviews. Actually even with only one English speaking member the interviews are awkward and just don't flow well. Obviously this problem is mainly in America and it's clear that the interviewers don't give two wanks about the group's They're interviewing. Performing and stuff in other countries is great but I think interviews should just stop unless it's buzzfeed lol. Idols with puppies is adorable and would LOVE to see twice do it. The western media need to stop treating kpop like a trend. This is people's careers and dreams and deserve respect. If you don't like kpop don't pretend to like it just to get attention. (Also I hope more idols come to perform in England lol) OK I'm done :)

I'm just gonna say this and no one @ me, but in terms of the reactor BRISXLIFE I don't know if you were talking about him specifically but I'm gonna defend him because out of all you showed on the video, he was the only one I recognized. So he is a TRUE k-pop reactor. So is Cameron Philip and other popular channels. I don't want "there are just fake reactors out there, etc." going around and stuff. I admit there ARE some specific. But not bris. Too much hate is going around to these reactors that don't deserve it and I would like to put a statement out there. There are literal hate accounts for them on instagram that I've seen and defended them too. So yeah I don't know where I was trying to go with this but I know I got out what I needed to say. Maybe I’m a bad kpop fan if I don’t take kpop all that seriously? why does everything have to be taken seriously? I mean it’s just a bunch of guys or girls wearing cool outfits, dancing around on a stage and singing cool, fun songs that often lack any kind of substantial meaning, but are still fun songs. Not to mention that most of our faves have no creative artistry whatsoever or lack full control over their content. Everything is nicely handled for them to just entertain. idols aren’t even taken seriously by the korean gp. With this in mind, it makes sense why it’s not taken seriously in the west. But why do people get so upset? Imo Kpop is this fun lighthearted thing that fandoms make more serious than it has to be. That’s why I don’t understand fandom wars ever since I got into kpop about a year ago. It’s just something that I listen to once in a while for a good time yet I can see that kpop from a marketing standpoint and aesthetically is really great but lacks the authenticity which makes something “art.” Maybe someday it will be taken seriously, who knows. I think idols themselves are aware that they’re not taken that seriously but they seem to be okay with it. All we can do as fans is just be happy for the successes of our favorite groups no matter how vapid that success may seem. Guys love what you love.

I would definitely recommend Zach Sang for kpop interview,bi been a fan of his for years and he does his research. The Tiffany, BTS and MonstaX interviews are superior than the rest. Also his interviews with Liz gillies are amazing if any is interested. (Ok now my rant) YESSS to the clout chasing, it sooo obvious that “reaction channels” are doing it for a quick buck. I understand fans want to spread awareness of their favs BUT imo they are giving these reactors to much validation. These reactors profit off of fans protective nature and obsession to spread the word. Some of these reactors have reacted to the same 4 groups for the past 3 years and they STILL can’t tell them apart or remember their name. I kid you not, 🤦🏽‍♀️. Even fans are blind when companies randomly say a kpop group name, the whole fandom comes. That brings engagement to the company’s platform equaling to money. It’s a shame too because I’m not in to kpop as I use to but seeing these new fans being used (without knowledge) make me sick.

also can we talk about western artists using kpop hype/fans for their own personal gain. Like, let's be real, most western artists who supposedly "want" to collab with kpop artists probably can't name more than two songs from the group and probably don't even know the members names. They're just exploiting the fame of the Korean groups and I feel really sorry for the groups themselves who genuinely think that they're wanting to collaborate with them. They don't actually look at their music and style as a group. I remember seeing that Camilla Cabello had responded to a video of Joy from Red Velvet dancing to Havana and immediately suggested a collab or something. She wouldn't have done that if Joy was a French artist, or an Indian artist. It was just because she's part of the kpop scene. And like how DJ Khaled told NCT he wanted to collaborate with them, and it's literally been months and we haven't heard anything since (not that I want NCT collaborating with a sexist prat like him). It just pisses me off, and I needed to rant sorry 😂

I actually really don't care either way. I'm not a die hard kpop fan, but I'm quite more into indie, alternative rock, future funk/neo soul or R'n'b so I gravitate towards that style also in Korean music as well. I do like kpop but I'm not bothered about whether or not they are looking for western validation or not. If it sounds good to me, I listen to it. Whatever the rest of the world may think doesn't exactly concern me. But I do agree with a little bit of what you said. However Kpop itself isn't very popular in the States. it is mainly a niche genre that has exploded, has made some impact but will ultimately be forgotten by the general public. The west already has a whole slew of genres and artists with a bit more popularity and kpop is ultimately seen as 'infantile and childish' even if the majority of kpop fans don't see it. Kpop also is not some new style of music, It's basically pop music in Korean with a pretty package aimed towards a specific market...which isn't bad but it isn't really taken seriously in the States. There were groups before in the states but it isnt exactly en vogue now. So the majority of people are taking it as this new shiny thing they want to be a part of, like a new 'trend'. To be honest, both sides are using each other...the west is using it as 'clout' and Korea is using the states for more recognition and to get more money. It's a symbiotic relationship. I guess I'm not so fully invested in kpop to really care about their interviews and such. I didn't think there was anything wrong about it lol. When Western stars do go to Korea or Japan, they are also subjected to the same novelty, and similar questions of that nature. Though, I do agree that western journalists should really make a habit of doing their research properly before asking questions.

I really hate how the not only American media and market but also the whole western world like for real did you see that tv presenter in Greece and the other in Brazil and many other American reporters who downgraded alot of groups using BTS as a defensive mechanism it's so fucked up . They didn't even know or listen to one God damn song and idk if you know about Kris and ariana's problem and how she and her manager kept throwing racist tweets about how can a random Chinese boy beat the queen Ari , they could've said that he is new In the American market or sth . And OMG that sarcastic apology for calling lay and NCT 127 some random Korean dancing crew like heck they played a tribute song not fucking knowing who are the artists wow that's soooo professional and smart . For me kpop groups don't need western validation or an American debut they can work in Korea and Asia in general and do big tours around the world from time to time and recognition will come to them eventually .heck companies can do things like what SM does that SM town concert each year in a different country and it's getting bigger each year

I don’t understand why it’s so hard to the west to promote and respect k-pop as other artists. At least here in Mexico they treat them like other artists even tho some interviews are cringey. The fact that super junior got invited and put as a main act. With popular Mexican artists was a nice gesture, so I wish the same in the west. The only thing I would want is that k-pop doesn’t gets “separated” from other music genres like they have their 1 hour special in the radio... why don’t just play the songs in any hour like a regular song idk I’ve been a kpop fan for 10 years now and I’m glad now i can see my faves in my country but still there’s a lot of things that can be better. Sorry for the mess of comment , English is not my forte
