The Dad bought a chocolate chip ice cream for his son and he has a good heart, but unfortunately, his son will not eat ice cream until he finishes his dinner.

This scene is a close second to my favorite. My favorite is the breakfast scene. I found both of them hilarious back then and still do today!

With the way that kid flung the ice cream lid on the table, staring at his dad as if to challenge him to do something, that's great acting!

Billy was just lashing out because he missed his mom. His dad needed to give him a break because when a parent leaves it’s the kids who end up suffering.

Next best thing to being little boy is children of our own or of the unicorn.

Ted grounds Billy from yeeting a chair and grounded for a month and Billy stayed in his room.

Definitely a learning experience between father and son. Billy was acting out big time and misbehaving terribly, but I’m no longer on Ted’s side when he calls him a little shit and says I hate you back. Regardless of how pissed off he is (and for good reason), he goes too far at the end in my opinion. Of course, both of them are really deep down upset at Mom leaving.

In Ted's place I would have yelled a very loud "NO!" the moment Billy put his hand on that freezer handle...and then the ice cream itself would go straight to the outdoor trash, taking a hose to it to melt it all if that was necessary. And you can bet there would be a lock on the freezer the next time ice cream was bought if he didn't learn from that lesson.

You can see why Ted lost it with Billy. Obviously he was still hurting Joanna left and knew it was his fault she left. Ted was also under pressure due to his work schedule and the account he was given and him looking after Billy effected his job and he took it out on Billy.

For some reason, probably unknown to him, Billy had to test his dad to see if his bad behavior would drive his father away. Billy believed his bad behavior made his mother leave and Billy had to know if his father would leave for the same reason.

My parents never called me a little shit. Nor did they say they hated me in a moment of anger.

All that time, until watching this classic movie, I thought the Family Guy episode "Mother Tucker" just made that whole scene up. When I first saw the movie, I then connected the dots, that they did indeed recreate that scene, just like how they would often do, upon other movies/tv shows at times, for references/cutaways.
