For me on direct current I agree if a connector is to small there would be high resistance and act like a fuse and burn at the connector 💯💯or at least show signs of heat the esc if it had a lack of amps or power shouldn’t burn up that quick so I believe it’s a firmware issue or a solder joint not good or a parts defective in the esc good discussion video appreciate you taking the risk to ask this question 👍👍💯💯💯💯

Ive had great experience with castle products and their support is off the charts. My first and and last Tekin esc burned up rite out of the box. Im running xlx in my dbxle2 without issues other than shorter run times when i gear higher than the stock 13t. Higher rpms more current draw.

First off a majority of my ESC motor combos are Castle Creations I do have a few with Tekin motors but typically do not run different manufacturers ESC and motor combos ....I checked the XLX 2 it was in the manufacture code to have known issues i had no issues with it. I called Castle Creations and sent it back one day after receiving it I recieved a e-mail telling me the replaced it and sent it back...As for testers used I have a filling they supplied them with ESC motor combos to be tested most were speed runners . When you have a ESC that is capable of 800 to 1000 plus amps per phase you will put a great deal of stress on electronics ....I have a great deal more to say but "Love MY Castle Creations Products"

I’m a firm believer in the bad firmware, possibly some bad quality control on actually parts inside and I think the firmware and kv definitely go hand in hand, from what I see it’s mostly 1100kv or higher burning up, I am waiting a little longer but I am between the max 5 or xlx 2 but going 800kv all the way, awesome video and topic keep up the awesome content!

Firmware can definitely have an effect on efficiency and amp spikes. A high pwm will cause the gate drivers to enter a state of neither open nor closed more often. This halfway open state is where mosfets generate most of their heat. Even someting as simple as punch settings can drop those amp spikes that pop the esc internals.

I just got a replacement xlx2 that was manufactured last month (October 2021) and it went up in flames. Latest firmware was installed on it, and the only settings I changed were the BEC up to 7.5v, LVC up to 3.4v, and the braking up to 65%. It was running great, until I finally took it to a park and opened it up. Motor temps were still cold, but my batteries were very hot from the ESC going up. I was running QS8 connectors on the ESC and batteries. Really scary... It was in an outcast 8s exb.

Sorry about late comment on old thread. I'm on my 2nd Xlx2 which was a brand new warranty replacement from castle. 2nd run it burst into flames, burnt both turbo fans, shorted both my lipos and nearly burnt my body off. I was told bad solder joint but an electrical engineer that works with me soldered every joint. Qs8 anti spark connectors....the works. It smoked every connector, component on my power system. Fed up I bought a Ztw 12s Beast Pro. Never been happier. I run 3 4s in series.......perfection. 800kv castle. Buttery smooth....6 months no issues.

Usually in a situation like this there is a bottleneck in the electronics where the resistance is too low for the amount of material or heat dissipation, this point of low resistance generates more heat as more amps are dawn past it. This creates enough heat to melt solder. liquid metal can cause catastrophic failures if it shorts across you mains input. at this point your esc is dead. Now you can potentially have a battery direct short, and having a lipo battery dumping everything it can as fast as it can generates massive amounts of heat inside itself until it potentially combusts, creating a fire that produces its own oxygen. If the battery burns in most of the cases, a misalignment of the buss bar is a plausible scenario. As far as burnt battery connectors, Its possible the burn marks could be a result of a different component burning, or the heat generated during the battery short. Which again causes massive amounts of current to flow through the bottleneck which could be a battery connector, or more so a lose battery connector/poorly soldered battery connector.
@Voodoobrew101
@Voodoobrew101 3 года назад
Mostly think of water, and what creates water pressure or more accurately a high amount of water current to flow. to increase in a pipe. Electricity is kind of similar as far as things breaking, except for the whole pressure thing. Gravity can pull water down hill, so maybe the old analogy holds up...
@ExocagedRC
@ExocagedRC 3 года назад
Right. I see the burnt up esc’s but in most cases the plugs are fine. Even the xt90 ones. Now the DBXLE2.0 is the only one I have where I have noticed a bit of heat at the plugs so that one needs the 8mm plugs soon.
@Voodoobrew101
@Voodoobrew101 3 года назад
@@ExocagedRC remember copper wires transfer heat as well as electricity. Large wires can wick away much of the heat and save the plug. That and the short in the esc is not necessarily perminanent. So the short in the esc can fail before the battery plug, but after the battery has already reached thermal runaway. Also a lose plug conection can generate more heat then a good tight conection. Think of the conection as surface area and spreading out weight, but in this case its heat. Also the plastics have different melting temperatures that vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.
@Voodoobrew101
@Voodoobrew101 3 года назад
Something else to consider is the amp ratings. Which esc manufactures dont share. These are more of a hard limit then sharing recomended motor kv limits. Constant amp ratings are say 100a, but every 10 seconds you throw a 200a burst at the esc, this just raised your constant amp draw as well. This translates to more heat in the esc then it can handle. I dont know the ratings for the esc in question, but my guess is a 600a burst exceeds the recomended amp draw. Talking about getting bigger batteries that supplies more amps just increases the probability of catastrophic consequences. Setting the punch down one step to 90% will prevent the amp spikes quite a bit. And most likley eliminate the problem. But everyone wants to push it to the limit, and some people find it sooner then others.

My guess is their was no field testing, probably just simulation testing on computers. Theirs so little to an esc lack of testing is one only reasons so many of these escs are defective in such high numbers. Given the high cost, simple technology and lack of moving parts on rc electronics theirs no good reason stuff like this should happen. Hopefully castle is standing by their product and replacing everything when ask without much question. Seems like the last xlx series had some of these same issues as well.

ITS THE high KV’s of the motors that’s the main problem . You’re right. This is a issue with those huge Chinese ecs’s also. But also ....When you take them apart ,you can see the shit stains (technical term when having arcing connections lol) on the bus bars Cuz there’s a busbar issue too (it’s no alignment per-say, it’s just not a flat solid connection) . ..On some off the production line . F/W fixes are usually a band-aid for H/W related defect issues. A bad run of Mosfets for example will get a F/W fix to limit output across that Mosfet. Still a band-Aid, which then circumvents the intended specs of the Mosfet application. Then there is even more with the Delta update. Castle advised not to run them with intended motors till the Update arrives. Guys have these ESC's sitting in boxes collecting dust waiting for the F/W for months now. That's not Castle love if you ask me. BTW, If KT was using a Delta wind motor, is it his fault the XLS2 burned??? Castles fault in my opinion. Overload in general is when there is more pull than push. In other words, the amp draw is greater than output capacity. Standard liquid electrolytic capacitors may be hitting a wall with this ESC. The more of these capacitors you have connected in series, the higher the resistance of the group. So the ESC may have the capability to draw the high amps but if the discharging isn't up to the task, then you will have fire. Any system can be overloaded this way. Solid state capacitors could solve this problem but their capacity is so low that you would need it to be nearly twice the size as the ESC to achieve the same specs as the liquid capacitors.
@ExocagedRC
@ExocagedRC 3 года назад
Ok. When I was getting the overload codes it was with a bigger 7200mah battery. The smaller 5000mah batteries didn’t give me this code.
@Megasty15
@Megasty15 3 года назад
@@ExocagedRC Castle knows what is going on with these things. If the overload code doesn't shut it down, it will fry. People must be disabling it, or the barn burners might have a crappy capacitor pool. Either way, there's only so much that the hardware can deal with if the firmware isn't backing it up. I know Castle wants us to control all the aspects of this thing, but disabling overload protection when cranking up the amp draw is stupid. That's why they said Kev burned his on purpose. It was obvious that he disabled it when he programmed it. It should be inherent that there should be some type of failsafe machine code that won't allow the hardware to be maxed out no matter what you program it for - but I guess Castle like seeing $250 mini flamethrowers.

When it comes to heat it’s more about draw then it is about push. Drawing power across any restrictions creates the heat. So this is where a bad connection or a bad solder job can cause problems. Drawing too much current in a high torque motor when requesting max throttle will expose weak spots. Use a quality temp gun after several hard pushes in speed to check where in the system your temps are spiking. If your motor is scorching hot, the problem is there, if your esc is hot, the problem is there. I apply the k.i.s.s. principle when diagnosing electrical issues and it has served me well. When we overthink it and start supposing things, we invariably get it wrong. Go back to the basic scientific method using your 5 senses for diagnosis. Heat issue in esc, means the esc is the problem, for example sir.
@Voodoobrew101
@Voodoobrew101 3 года назад
Your trouble shooting method is flawed. lets say for example you have a functional mamba x and a brushless motor. But you forgot to tell the esc to run in brushless mode and it is set to brushed mode. Without safety precautions the ESC will produce non switching dc voltage. When you pull the trigger what happens? The once perfectly good motor heats up because that's what brushless motors do when they get DC non switching voltage. But the problem wasn't in the motor, or the esc, it's in the user....

can someone explain the d winding or the types of windings these motors, i have always thought they were all the same until now and also just never cared about researching the windings but lol. my though though is there are some that have actual internal issues cause there are people like you that have xlx2s that work. kev's xlx2s clearly had to have something wrong with them, he just tapped the throttle, but i do find it interesting that they did turn on and calibrate with out failure, which i guess would mean it would be the busbars saying little or no current was running through them at idle. i think the main thing is the busbars and then the motor windings that kill them. otherwise they are a solid unit

Over simplified but... They are just different methods of connecting the wires in a motor. A Y wind would be kind of like doubling the motor turns, the current travels twice as far with twice the resistance as it goes through 2 coils. On a delta wind the current only travels through one coil. So delta winds will have half the resistance and twice the amp draw and a twice the KV. Less resistance, so more power, so more heat.

@@Voodoobrew101 thx that makes sense, so with double the resistance is that what could.cause the issue then

For me the issues looked to be the motor KV being too high for the esc, the windings on the motors could be an issue but how come the other mambas could run any motor without any issues and the xlx2 does, so yes it could be a firmware issue and them thinking ppl were only gonna use castle motors. I did have two of their 1650 kv motor god bad and burnt up and one burnt my hobbywing esc, but castle took care of me and replaced my motors. As far as connectors i started running the QS8 connectors on my mmx8s for the xmaxx and made a big difference on esc and battery temperature, the esc fan barely comes on now and if it comes on its only for about a min or two i also got about 3 to 5 minutes more run time on my xmaxx running 800kv with 30/35 mod 1.5 gears. Im looking into getting a xlx2 for the xmaxx and move my mmx8s into my mojave. This is my opinion and why i think they were having so many issues with fires.

Great points. So the Q8 connectors lowered the temps?
@Juacocb7
@Juacocb7 3 года назад
@@ExocagedRC using them im guessing it helped with lowering the resistance of the amp draw from the batteries and by that it helps with the temperatures. Before the QS8 i could run my xmaxx and after 10 mins the fan would stay on until LVC, and u could feel the heat coming out from the system. Now i could be driving and jumping and it will come on for a few minutes then turn off and unless im really pushing it doimg speed runs back and forth the road it wont turn un. And at LVC the batteries, plugs, esc and even the motor are just warm and u can keep ur fingers on it. I dont have temperatures reading cuz my thermometer died

I'm not a electric guy to figure it out but people running the castle motors are running them to hard an you should look into delta fans their for computers but all our rc fans are for them just a rebrand check them out they are super high flow fans

Hey, I am new to kratons and larger rcs, I am wondering why your gear mesh(?) or diffs maybe sound like loose metal clanging. There are so many videos of varying opinions on ratios, mesh and diffs that i find it all overwhelming. what should (approx) a healthy kraton sound like? (motor/esc sounds aside) Great vids, thanks

The phone picks up on the noises worse than they are. But some of it is the dogbones at the diffs getting worn and loose.
