Hot take but Guts is *one* of the most well written characters in fiction. Edit: my brothers, I am not in any way saying that Guts is THE most well written character of all time, I can think of hundreds that are more well written, Guts is just my favourite character.

@abdullrahman-xh5pc Guts had a really rough childhood, he was born from his Mother's hanging corpse, his adoptive Mother died and his adoptive Father Gambino blamed him and abused him for it. Child Guts was r@ped by one of Gambino's soldiers that basically sold him for 3 gold coins, one night Gambino was drunk amd went to kill Guts in his sleep, but Guts managed to kill him, and then Gambino's soldiers chased after Guts and Guts basically got away. Basically years later, Guts was a mercenary and joined a mercenary group, and became best friends with the leader Griffith. Guts left 3 years later which drove Griffith insane. Griffith summoned the God Hand and sacrificed his merc band to become a God, Guts had to watch his friends get eaten alive by demons. And then after Griffith forced Guts to watch him r@pe Guts' girlfriend infront of him. There's more to this, but this was just a quick summary. Guts was literally qualified to be the average villain but he went through such character development it's insane. You would have to read Berserk I highly recommend it.

But further chapters he changed a lot, if you read Berserk you will know why he is well written. (Unless someone explains him better than me lmao)

Kento Muira made the greatest story of all time that still hasn't been finished to this day. So many other animes are based upon his story. Even the Dark Souls games are based on Berserks story
I disagree with the suffering due to the fact that Kratos lived longer as he aged. It's been implied that his nightmare hasn't ended. Suffering through physical pain yet get healed later by a fairy. Cannot compete with the mental health of one that's living more than a thousand years.
If Guts went up against Kratos' brother Deimos, he might have a chance. Regardless, Kratos and Guts would have way too much respect for one another to consider fighting. They'd just be friends.

Honestly have no opinion on this. Never seen Berserk in any media. Never played a God of War game. So i have no real idea of their characters other than that both of them are absolute badasses.

(2) and to be fair kratos was the one that caused most of his problems back in greece and the fact that he is willing to kill innocent civilians was brutal and violentbut yeah he is still a character with a sad backstory and im just happy that he changed to a caring father in gow (2018) to gow (ragnarok and valhalla)
Very W edit, but I'd personally say Kratos > Guts. Both have had the same sorta impact on me but as a guy with some family problems, seeing my man Kratos become a father again hit hard asf. Guts is still my fav manga protagonist tho

Tbh guts is overall more well written, but i think kratos is still largely comparable, even in suffering Guts had to endure his best friend killing everything he ever loved including the most reprehensible act of violating his beloved caska, On the other hand we have kratos who endured the loss of his brother, the betrayal of ares , him killing his own family and cursed to wear their ashes for all eternity to remind him of his sins (and since he loves forever he's been hunted by Nightmares for far longer than guts) then procedes to kill all the gods of Olympus to get his revenge, only to realise much later that he needed to make peace with himself to be redeemed and become the embodiment of Hope

Both are very great characters but kratos is better they have very similar story killing everyone to kill one person like kratos to Zeus and guts to griffith first creators had more suffering kratos lost his wife and a Child that he kill himself killing Aries is was like the Killing griffith to guts but in the path of Revenge he got down and down and down in he realises mistakes and he had a redemption arc so that's why I think that kratos is better then guts
Guts takes this easily. It's not even close imo, because Berserk is 100% literature and GoW is a video game that only took a firm approach to writing in 2018, every game before was focused on gameplay over story. Kratos simply doesn't make me feel much of anything as a character. Guts makes you feel for him and the writing of Berserk in general really gets you to feel for the world of Berserk.

bro guts went through it all, he got raped at the age of 9, he was abandoned as a baby and was forced to be taken in by people who dont want him, his foster mom (the only person who loved him) died when he was only 3, he witnessed his closest friend sacrifice 5 of his friends and rape guts’ own wife right in front of him to become a member of the godhand, and guts got a brand in his neck that never lets him escape his suffering of fighting apostles upon apostles, and despite the fact that he’s only human he has to survive his own dedicated hell for the rest of his life or until he reaches femto’s power
