Because they "look cool"? Because of the power you feel when holding it in your hand and gazing upon the blade, imagining the things you could do with it-- the destruction you can cause? Or is it because of their association with the Jedi? That by holding one somehow you have transcended your own limits and established yourself as a member of the Order, and all that it stands for? Your obsession with such a weapon is deeply rooted in your obsession with the Jedi, or conversely with its power, a Sith obsession. So which is it? Perhaps both? Regardless, realize that a lightsaber will not make you a Jedi, nor a Sith. You can cause much destruction with it, to be sure, but that destruction will most likely be upon yourself or those around you, as you are not trained in its usage. You would be nothing more than a small child with a large blade. In awe perhaps, but also in harm's way. jk, just wanted to try channeling my inner Kreia. Lightsabers are rad :)

8:28 This is probably one of my favourite quotes from Kreia. Everything she says is bang on, echoing Kenobi's lecture to Anakin on how his lightsaber "is your life!" He says it so passionately, and therein points out just how dangerous such thinking is. Being a Jedi is NOT integral on having a lightsaber. It's something Luke figures out later on in life (we're talking Legends Luke, not...whatever Disney did to him) to the point that he stops carrying one. Kreia would like him, I think.
@TheKueiJin
@TheKueiJin 2 года назад
It's very clear that she would not. Just note her perception of helping out the refugees on Nar Shaddaa, for why. Luke came late, with "help" that only interfered with the clash between Rey and Kylo, and finally, weakened himself to ghost status, of the Force variety.

I think that the Jedi reveer the lightsaber because its a symbol of their identity. It is part of them, of their phylosophy and their teachings. The Jedi teach caution when wielding power and thats why the oppose the Dark Side. The lightsaber is a representation of that. A flick of the wrist can cut an arm or a leg. The Force is such power, always just a step from unleashing great destruction. And the Jedi use lightsabers because through them, they represent control and mastery of the Force, but also discipline and wisdom in how to use it. There is nothing special about a Force Sensitive that uses a blaster or a vibroblade. Its just someone with good aim. A Jedi needs a lightsaber, because that thing of light is so much more than it seems. Kreia is right in what she says, but I feel that the symbolism of a lightsaber is bound to the very concept of what it is to be a Jedi. You have the responsability of wielding a power that can change the very fate of the galaxy and only through a lightsaber can a Jedi understand the weight of such power on a more, lets say physical level. Thats my thoughts, at least. Thank you for this new Connundrum! :D

As for why saying "Because I feel naked without it" gets one LS points, I think that comes down to one simple thing; she's being earnest. In the other options, she's aspiring to do things with it (be it good or bad) - but in that option, she's admitting there is no real higher cause to it aside from familiarity and associating it with who she is; she's being humbly honest about the fact it's for her own peace of mind rather than trying to lie or blow it out of proportion as being a matter of righteousness. Or at least that's my take on it.
@PapitoQinn

@@PapitoQinn That's my point; she's being hunted/put in danger, so she seeks something familiar - something she's personally accustomed to, not playing it up as anything grander or more ambitious. Hence, LS points - or at least, again, that'd be my explanation for it.

I really like your comment. Saying instead that a lightsaber would inspire hope seems a bit pretentious and ignoring the reality that you are going to mostly use it to battle and kill enemies. In the Expanded Universe lore, that's where Luke's New Jedi Order succeeds - he taught a wide variety of weaponry to the Jedi and even encouraged it. Hell one primary example in the Jedi Knight series is the former mercenary and now Jedi Master Kyle Katarn. Now that you mention the possibility of a Force-sensitive Jedi using the Force to power up or speed up the blaster bolt, if Kyle did that, that would make him 1000x more badass.

Besides, your examples from real life, other games and human's culture are even closer to a real world (then theoretical aspects). Clearly stated thoughts make your words understandable, but it still gives people opportunity to think their own mind and improve themselves. Your ideas spread across the galaxy and make echoes in the life of universe. For example, I can feel strong influence of these problems and quastions to my world view. I believe that I'll not become a slave of such influences, because I've still got a choice wich of them to listen for. She was a Jedi that simple listen to will of the force never used a lightsaber, I think she ever had one either. Well said, this is exactly the reason the new lore's kyber crystals make me mad, it misses the point entirely that perhaps the Jedi and Sith obsess too much over them. Furthermore, Jedi were admittedly inspired by Japanese samurai, where a weapon is just an extension of the self, the diligence and hard work of the user. Its not a crutch, a slsoace sword version of the myth of the gun. The new version is such a waste of great philosophical symbolism.

Another great video. I was wondering when you would cover this topic. Me thinks that Kreia would make the ultimate sentinel in some ways. I’ve always taken her comment of ‘watch as they hold a blaster’ as more a comment about how it is our minds that are more important. Our creativity as it were. Without the force a Jedi or sith in most cases would be nothing. Well, besides sentinels.
@PapitoQinn

In that particular clip she is mostly talking about Jedi losing the force. Since that's what Atton asks her about. But like you suggested, it can be about more. Jedi are tied to what they've learned from the Jedi academy, anything outside of that and they're kinda lost. And it can hinder creativity.

After watching the development of the Jedi and Sith for so long. I have come to a startling conclusion. the reason that the Jedi and the Sith prefer Lightsabers is the same. For different reasons, their doctrine insists that they kill their enemies at Close Range, why, because in the words of a certain evil clown man “guns are too quick, you can’t savor all the little emotions…” for the sith, This makes sense. They thrive off pain and suffering. (At least it would seem they do). The Jedi on the other hand should find it abhorrent. They would want to make sure that whoever they’re fighting doesn’t suffer. Then it hit me no they wouldn’t. because knowing that their weapon could cause irreparable damage would dissuade them from using it in the first place. Jedi only use their light sabers as a last resort. Their goal is to avoid fighting at all costs. So they use a weapon and that can cause long-term damage as a counter motivation to use it. Hopefully, you understood all that.

One thing not mentioned. Those who are not Force sensitives cannot use lightsaber. The non-Force sensitives companions can't use lightsabers, only after they're trained on the Force. Even in KOTOR 1, when you have no Force points at the beginning, you can't use lightsabers. In the SW movies, you never see lightsabers used by non-Force sensitives. You could say "Well, that's just game mechanics and movie script". Or you could conclude that you NEED the Force to use lightsabers. You could speculate it's something about the crystals. I guess the dialogue shown in this video is an introduction to being too reliant on weapons (lightsaber) or religion (the Force). In the end, true strength is from the will, your beliefs, they can make you powerful or powerless. And "betray your ideal" is how you test and strength your beliefs, in order to follow the "right ones" (at least attempt to). Not willing to adapt, to change, to correct their beliefs was the downfall of the Jedi and Sith. Their relationship to lightsabers and the Force is just a symptom of it.
@Gokersky
@Gokersky 5 лет назад
Well, Force Awakens had Finn use a lightsaber for a bit and he definitely wasn't trained. Not sure about force sensitivity since the latest movies seem to want to claim everyone is force sensitive. But I get what you mean. You were never given an option to train with lightsabers until you were found to be strong with the force and no one seemed to really want to try using a saber when they were not trained for it, afaik.

Well yes you can't use one in the game. But you certainly can use one even if you're not force sensitive. There isn't anything stopping you from using it, except for how dangerous it is for someone who isn't trained in it. If this were to happen than it would be the extended universe comics I would imagine. But even in the films; in empire strikes back, Han using Luke's lightsaber to gut that Tonton. Grievous was trained in lightsaber combat but he wasn't force sensitive. It's a skill, and the Jedi is a religion. So technically, even non-force sensitives can become Jedi. Problems that would arise would be things like, not being able to deflect blaster bolts as well. But there's no reason a Jedi can't use a blaster. I think they somehow consider blasters to be "beneath" them.
@armandoalcb
@armandoalcb 5 лет назад
@@PapitoQinn Perhaps you can use lightsabers without the Force, but you can't use lightsabers effectively without the Force. The question is, why anyone hasn't used lightsabers effectively without the Force?
@PapitoQinn
@PapitoQinn 5 лет назад
@@armandoalcb Wookiepedia says that Grievous wasn't force sensitive. But even if he was, he wasn't at the time that he was trained in lightsaber combat. I think the nature of the weapon makes it too dangerous for regular people to use. At least with a physical sword you can slip up and cut yourself, but with a lightsaber you lose an entire piece of your body. You can use a lightsaber without the force, you generally can't use one AS effectively as you could with the force. I think mandalorian neocrusaders would have been more than skilled enough to use one. Many of them were able to fight and even defeat Jedi in hand to hand combat. I find it interesting how being a 'Radical Centerist' and taking Kreia's teachings onboard means that you can never unlock the more powerful classes of both Lightside and Dark. There is no Center/Grey equivalent in the game. Regardless of whether borrowed power has value or not, it undoubtably makes the player weaker. It seems to suggest perhaps a flaw in Kreia's teachings. Ultimately being centered will allow you to shift either to light or dark, using the tool you need, but you become weaker since you deprive yourself of the strengths by focusing on a skill. Its the old saying 'Jack of all Traits, Master of None'. In the real world we can master a skill but be competant in many others but that is not the case with the force. To resist both the light and the dark gives you no strength in either, and if you could compare the in game stats of a player dedicated to 1 side or ther other they would be significantly stronger than one in the center, even if all other things are identical. I dunno, something I was thinking.

Papito Qinn true, purple is represented as a synthesis for the light and dark. However, what I get from her is that she is neither Sith nor Jedi, and I think the symbolic value of this being true is to be shown as separate from both, not simply the unification of both. The Sith and the Jedi are neither human in any respect, both are far removed from what it means to be alive or human. On the other hand, Kreia is more human, more than human in a way that compliments our nature but does not bow to or repress it. Papito Qinn perhaps, but what I am saying is that I do not believe there is enough truth in either alone, and I think she knows that too. What we see is limited to the story and plot.

@@Billmaster115 There isn't enough truth in either alone, nor is there enough truth when combined. That's when you have to fill in the aforementioned blanks. There isn't any way she couldn't see this of course.

For as often as I watch these videos. I now just realized that I’ve never liked em. Been so coughs up with not caring about the likes. While also knowing how it helps the creator. Changing that.

What's the game you're playing at around 10:10?

Sins of a solar empire: rebellion. Great game. I always have it installed. The development team only had a budget of 1 million dollars and an idea. The game was a massive success for good reason.

@@PapitoQinn I've been meaning to get back into space games for a while now. Or at least games set in space. It's so weird how around the 360 gen, they pretty much disappeared, along with another love of mine, MechWarrior.

They do, and it is why they generally view the lightsaber as but a tool. a means to an end. however the value it retains is their connection to the weapon through the crystal and force energy that resonates with them, it keeps them centered or reminded of themselves within the force. the specific difference of their own resonance amidst the greater sound of the force around them. the blade commemorates their passing of the trial to harness the force on a material level and create something through that. what they give up is ownership of greater unnecessary wealth or materials past base requirements such as food, clothes and weaponry.

@@AndyRoidEU Quite possibly. Obsidian Entertainment was a very small company when they made KoTOR 2.
