I was given this very large tabletop radiogram and was instructed by my wife to just put up for sale and get rid of it. I couldn't do it though. Follow along as I restore it to it's original working condition with a modern twist.

Don't know why I didn't see this nine months ago. Fantastic work! You sure know how to give an old barnyard lemon a new lease on life! When we moved into a smaller house 20 years ago I made the foolish decision to give away our bulky 1980s component stereo system, including a 30 year old vinyl disc collection, and replace it with a modern stereo/CD changer/combo that was very compact but cost more than my car. I figured the high cost was proof that it would give quality sound for the next 20 years, but it died only six years later. I've been lamenting the loss of our record collection ever since. Now that I know how, I'm going to keep an eye out for a forgotten but deserving radio/record-changer so I can rebuild it like your Kreisler.

Hi SY, I also lament the loss of our record collection but we were not to know. We have all had those all in one stereo systems with a limited life, I've been through a few of them 😀 Good luck with your hunt and successful restoration of a working record player, we still use that one everyday 👍🙂

Hello from the United States -- deep flyover region. You showed yourself to be a true craftsman with this work. That is a beautiful and serviceable radio. You have skills that many people would love to have. The main thing you have is patience, a great memory and you appreciate the olden days radio and record players. Mono play, those were the days. You have of course made it look original and far beyond it, too. Your care to detail is so admirable. Give you some power tools, a diagram and a project you see it through to the end. It looks swell. When you get ready, it should bring you some chunk of money. I know it's hard to part with a labor or love but sometimes it's best.

Hi Larry, I do appreciate the olden days and the work and joy of Dad bringing home something new for the family and I sometimes wonder of the history behind what I'm restoring. I will have to move on some gear sooner or later, I'm running out of room 😃

@@DavidTipton101 Radio's History is a story within itself. People depended on the radios serious down to Earth listening enjoyment. Variety shows, comedy, mystery filled the living room, kitchen, workshops and anywhere a good story could be blasted. The Old George Burns and Gracie Allen show, Bob Hope, The Lone Ranger, and many more. The day of the " War of the Worlds," seemed to become a reality to most. Invading aliens narrated by Orsen Wells made it so believeable that people thought it to be happening. Once the radios lacluster diminished and something new replaced it, the once cherished item went to the attic where dust collected upon it. It awaiting someone like yourself to revive it once more sit there patient. Just like anything else, radios have become a relic or an antique. It's astonishing how things just seem to fade into that decade but some bounce back. A person like yourself, reviving a past memory with detailed accuracy.

Incredible Job. I do not care how great they say digital music is, nothing sounds the same as vinyl and radio in my opinion. Glad you keep these machines alive, keep up the great work.

Another amazing quality, detail oriented job. I love your videos because they remind me of when my grandfather was alive. He was in television and radio repair here in the U.S from the 50's through the 80's. I would hang out in his shop as a kid and when I got a little older he would help me with electronic projects I made for myself. He was patient and meticulous just like you. When you added the auxiliary input it really reminded me of him because he modified literally everything he owned. Whether he added lights or inputs like that he always improved the product. Thanks again for the great video!

David Tipton yes will definitely replace the capacitors, only ran it for 10 seconds just to check functionality, will commence tear down in the near future. It's a nice addition to the collection, most of my radios are shortwave/communication receivers in the 60's-70's era, I think this old girl will add a touch of class. Brilliant! Excellent workmanship that I am sure the original engineers at Kriesler would approve of. Lovely to see things which were made in Australia coming back to life. My dad and I used to drive past the Plessy Rola factory in Harrisfield (Springvale North) on our way to the Dandenong market and seeing that speaker brought back those memories...also rekindling memories of seeing the back off our old valve Astor telly when the service man came round for repairs. We had a lowboy unit with two massive 12 inch Rola speakers. You do wonderful work. I salute you! I wish I had your skills and talent. Oh how I wish a niche small volume manufacturer would revive the Astor and Kriesler names and actually build units here in Australia at low volumes. The Crossley company in the US still puts out reproduction units but they are, alas, made in China.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 4 года назад
Hi tripsadelica, thank you, you are very kind. Alas I don't think we will see manufacturing back in Australia in a big way, the world economy is the way it is these days. I remember the serviceman with the back off the TV very well, turning on the TV on the 60s was touch and go at best and hoping it would keep going till the end of Sunday Night at the Movies was being optimistic. There are plenty of Chinese products branded with names we used to know but have no relationship with the original company. As Ned said "such is life" 🙄

The part of this that impressed me the most was your solution for the idler wheel. They can now change hands for silly money (I used to pay £3 for a whole record deck!) and such items can often be a deal breaker. The cartridge was a smart move. I'm a member of a vintage radio forum here in the U.K. (UKVRR) and those cartridges are very highly spoken of on there. The original cartridge would've destroyed stereo records in any case so it would've been of limited use. Also good that you managed to keep the stylus changeover knob at the front of the arm so it still looks right without leaving an ugly hole where it should be. You may have guessed from these ramblings that I'm a bit of a turntable afficionado. I'd love to see you do some more record players, they're the majority of what I've tinkered with for the last 40 years (my god, can it really be that long? Apparently it can...) and I found this video even more interesting than your excellent radio restorations! Oh by the way, I suppose it's academic now but the record deck in the video is a BSR GU-3.

Bravo! You did much more than I would ever have considered. I can machine, but am not setup to do that sandblasting uh I don't think so. I am a fan of Rube Goldberg techniques though. Wood working I can do, but get very impatient. I admire your skills and patience. My real skills are in electronics theory and troubleshooting. Sometimes I get frustrated with the physical effort of making the repair. Right now I am tearing down a wood version of the radiogram. The first thing I will do is the radio repair and recapping . Then onto the turntable mechanics and wood work the last endeavor. The rust you came across in the turntable bed would have been enough to stop me from going further. In my working years I fixed these things all the time. From Thanksgiving to Christmas was the busiest time of the year for record players.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 4 года назад
Hi Cosimo, you do need patients, I am impatient with some things like waiting for a bus or at a doctors but strangely not with mechanical things. I do get frustrated and walk away sometimes but come straight back and calmly resume where I left off, I don't understand it myself. You don't need a sandblaster, I have one and use it but I could have just as easily wire wheeled the rust off and treated it. I like you sometimes think I can't be bothered with the case but force myself and end up having a very enjoyable day. I hope your project comes out nice 😃

These old radios bring back great memories of when I was a kid in the early 50s. My whole family would sit around a cabinet model and listen to Inner Sanctum, Superman, etc. Later I was an active ham (AB4QQ) for several years, and still later hosted an internet old time radio show on Yesterday USA (The A Train). Really like your channel. Great work on the Kreisler, btw.
