Let's see how the three step calibration process on these T12 soldering stations works, and how accurate the tip temperature is afterward. This example is done on the KSGER soldering station, but will be the same for similar T12 stations that use the STM32 micro-controller chip.
If you need an inexpensive Tip Temperature Meter, this one works really well for under $15 USD:

There are quite a few videos about calibrating the KSGER station, but none shows such a solid way of doing it. The helping hand plus thermocouple? That's genius! Takes my shaky hands out of the equation! I got mine calibrated within 1-2 C thanks to your clever method. Thank you so much!

Thank you for this video, my station was 30 to 50 degrees low, but when calibrated it stayed within 10degrees, this has made a big difference to how well it solders, I can easily reliably solder and it is now a pleasure to use

@@Rchelicopterfun I have a question for you. Will the warm-up time be faster if we increase the voltage of the smps source inside the soldering iron?
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 3 года назад
I suppose it would, but it will also stress the heater element and tip - shorter tip life would be my presumption.

I might be wrong John but I believe that you’re supposed to insert the t12 tips and then screw on the sleeve with the silicone liner my ksger requires me to do it or it won’t make contact
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 4 года назад
Perhaps you have the aluminum handle iron? The 9501 iron I've been using for the past 18 months now doesn't require any special tip insertion process - there is also no silicone sleeve in it. The tips side in and make solid contact with the contact bands in the iron base. If they didn't slide in all the way and make contact - the "ERROR" message would be displayed immediately and the tips wouldn't work. Having to unscrew the end of the handle to remove & insert a tip would defeat one of the advantageous features of these direct drive solder tips - easy and fast on the fly tip changes as you're using the station.

For what is the little temperature in the right corner?
@fr3k513
@fr3k513 3 года назад
First point is 450 °C, while product manual states that temperatures > 380 °C shorten tip life very fast. So, it looks like this procedures damages new tip. Or do I miss something?
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 3 года назад
Tip life at high temp totally depends on how LONG solder tips are used at high temperature - it's accumulative degradation. For the very short, one time duration they achieve that temp during the calibration process, it's a non event.

I'm considering on getting the KSGER 3.2V. My question is: Are all T12 tips the same? What I mean is can any T12 tip work in this device, or do the tips have to be made specifically for each individual soldering iron? Thanks.

@John Salt I have a question about the Calibration (Tip Adjust) Menu. In your description above, of the full calibration process, only the sub-menu “Start” is used/described. What about the other two sub-menus? (Init-Adj, Exit-Adj) !! Any Idea? What are the Sub-menus under them, & how they contribute to the Calibration further?
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 3 года назад
Exit-Adjust exits the adjust menu. No idea on Init - never have used it.
@gbspikyfish
@gbspikyfish 3 года назад
@@Rchelicopterfun Based on what init does in other menus I'd assume that it would reset the calibration. Whether it resets for all tips or just this tip I don't know.

Ive seen some sellers recommend not testing the temp with a multimeter... is there a reason?
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 3 года назад
No reason other than you will deteriorate the temp probe over time by exposing it molten solder. They (DMM temp probes) are a consumable item regardless of what you test, but they will wear out faster when exposed to molten solder. Since making this video, I now use one of those FG-100 solder tip temp tester because the replacement temp sensors for them are less expensive and they already have a nice little platform for resting the tip on.

I just started using my t12 and one tip came broken (K) and the station displays ERROR when inserted and the other one works but it has gone black above the tip, is that bad?
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 4 года назад
If the tip is damaged and has an open circuit, the error is displayed - normal. I don't know what you mean by the tip turning black. As solder tips heat up, they oxidize and will discolor (usually a dull grey to brownish color), but when you clean them and re-wet them with solder, they are silver again for a short time until they oxidize again. This is why it's important to clean your tips as you work since solder will only flow if the tip is clean. More information can be found on my Beginner's soldering page: www.rchelicopterfun.com/rc-soldering.html I've also got a link on that page to a good article about tip maintenance which is a must read if you want to keep your tips in good condition.

Perfect video. Only one questión: the shake at menú standby... in my station don´t wake up... but if I shake it in running mode, it increments like short boost the temperature. Thanks from Spain about your videos. Excuse me my english.
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 5 лет назад
Not sure what the issue might be there. If it's not waking up when you shake the iron, perhaps you have that function turned off? I go over all the menu settings in my review I did on this T12 station: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eKQC9G5SYII.html The boost activating however when you shake it, I really have no idea on. The only way to activate boost on the version I have is to push the dial button in. There is no option in the boost menu to have it turn on with the motion switch. Maybe your version (if it's different) has that option?

Very late reply, but for anyone else with this problem, I read a discussion of this on an electronics board and several people said the solution was to flip the sensor in the handle around (rotate it 180°), sometimes they're installed backwards at the factory. Typical Chinese QC ... :-)

how do you enter the tip selection "push it and turn right" what does it mean, i am pushing and turning nothing happens, pls help otherwise i like your video
@Rchelicopterfun
@Rchelicopterfun 5 лет назад
It means exactly that... Push the dial selection knob in and keep it pushed in while turning the knob right (or clockwise if you prefer). If you are not getting into the tip selection menu with that process, the station is either not in run/working mode (ie. it's in standby or sleep mode instead), something is faulty with the station/selection knob, or you have a different station &/or different firmware.

If you are referencing the blue wet sponge, I mention what I used in the review I did of this station. It's just an ordinary cellulose sponge and cut it to fit the stand.
