This is my Kubota L175 diesel tractor. It's pretty beat up, but it was cheap and it runs and works great.
Everything Kubota: amzn.to/2bvZPbj
I would like to get some regular agricultural tires and wheels for it, though. It needs more weight in the front too; all around really. One of these days I plan to put a front-end loader on it. Not one of the new ones that cost thousands of dollars, of course. I'll do it in true Possum Living fashion by either building it from scratch, or finding something in poor condition (and probably built for another tractor) and rebuild/modify it to work.
The Kubota L175 is basically the same tractor as the grey-market Zen-Noh ZL1500.
I am using it to pull my 1966 Sears Suburban 12 garden tractor out of the briars in preparation for getting it running again, and possibly converting it to run on propane. I have other videos up of the Suburban running. I included some pictures here of the condition its cast-iron 12 hp Tecumseh HH120 was in when I got it. Basically, it had been parked with its exhaust valve open for an unknown length of time, and the top portion of the cylinder rusted and locked up the engine. For this reason, I got the whole thing for $80. I wrote an article about my trip to Kentucky to pick it up, complete with camping in the rain in the Land Between the Lakes (right beside the bridge that a ship hit and destroyed a couple of months ago, as it turns out).

Reminds me of when I was a kid. Our dog always got excited & barked when he knew we were going to start the tractor, too. Also, now-a-days, we have some really nice tractors, but in the early years, we had to do it the Possum way also. We had an old unstyled JD "A" that was really tough looking. The engine had been overhauled, so it had lots of power, but everything else was held together with baling wire & hope. But we used it a lot.

I never thought of the oil pressure but thats a good idea. And fixing the glow plug heaters is the best thing you can do. It will save a lot of time and wear on the battery and starter motor. You really don't need the indicator, if you just count to thirty that will probably do it.

I had my Kubota L-175 for a long time.I got it for free from a good friend and I had a box blade and a nice bush hog for it. I'll tell ya,, in lo 1 st gear they'll pull tons of weight !

You had some time getting it started. I never touch the decompression. I put in new glow plugs and I just preheat them until the little indicator on the dashboard glows bright red. Turn it over, and it catches right away. This works great even in the bitter cold of winter.

where is this glow plug indicator? I think I have one but its missing the actual light.

A friend of mine had a 4 cylinder Kubota tractor with a front end loader. We used it all the time on his 1500 acre property for setting up deer hunting stands, moving brush around, road maintenance, and everything else. It was a great tractor, and this one is just a smaller, two-cylinder version of the same thing. I think the L1500 is the grey-market version of this tractor. Assuming it is in decent condition, you couldn't go wrong with it. I doubt I will ever get rid of this one.

Hey we are all with ya, i am planning on doing the same thing once I get some more money saved from my other job, got to start some where and yes the ag businesses are dying out to huge corporate ones so all the little ones are extremely welcomed and need to network with one another to stay in the loop and unite against the bigger ones. Keep with it my friend.

You're right about the voltage, I looked in the shop manual and it is certainly 1.5 volts. And I do believe my plugs are in a series but I can check later on.

Good luck, Kenneth. That sounds like a worthy goal. I hope you are able to get the tractor, and that it gives you good service. It might be a good idea to have it checked over by a good tractor mechanic. If everything is in good condition, it should give years and probably decades of trouble-free service.

Thanks for the info about glow plug wiring. I agree with you that I should repair it. Unfortunately, my tractor does not have a differential lock. I wish it did, because that would help quite a bit with some tasks.

I use the decompressor to let it build some oil pressure before hitting it with the compression load. The glowplug wiring is missing, including the indicator. I have to figure out how much current the plugs are supposed to pull, then I will be able to build a new circuit for it. I'll probably use some nichrome wire to build a new indicator/ballast resistor. BTW, sorry somebody flagged your comment as spam. It wasn't me, and your comment certainly isn't spam.

Yes. The engine designation is Z750, because it displaces approximately 750cc. It produces about 15 hp continuous at 2600 rpm.

They are a great tractor, But I can`t help it I have to correct some thoughts, it is 1.5 ohms resistance not volts (I checked my manual) they are to be wired in parallel (each one gets 12 volts, they each get ground in the head) and if you glow it 10 seconds that is ideal 30 will burn them up fast. The indicators are available aftermarket and are very reasonable.
@Possumliving
@Possumliving 10 лет назад
Sounds like a tractor I would like. Actually I have an A, but it is the styled version. I need to get a carb for it so I can get it running. But I have seen a few old tractors and trucks too, still on the job while being held together with baling wire and the occasional ugly but strong weld.

They work well enough to start the tractor. I've got to crank it for about 5-10 seconds and it starts every time. Stout little machine

my grandpa had a 4CYL diesel in a larger kubota model from the 80's and as i recall is was pretty much problem free. im considering getting a L1500 Series with the same engine. I just want some reviews on the engine in a whole.

That looks like my place with the Suburbans. I luvs those Suburbans , great machines. Also have the same Kubota in the barn that was in boxes when I got it. I soo. found out the steering sector box is tbe weak link on these tractors. Water runs down at the steering wheel and fills up the box. If simply washing the grease out doesn't where it out winter freeze will burst and destroy it. Hanging up I had a Model T Ford steering box to use. I just couldn't afford the new one and knowing if it got rained on it would do the same thing over. Also my hood and fenders are destroyed, but have an 8N Ford hood to cut down to fit. Think I'll paint it like a red belly Ford.

I'm pretty sure the indicator is part of the resistance that drops the voltage going to the plugs. I saw a reference somewhere to 1.5 volts supplying the plugs, but that may be wrong. Either way I don't think you can just apply full battery voltage to them. That's the way my old Mercedes diesel was; the plugs were connected in series with the indash indicator which was just another glow plug enclosed in a steel housing with a screen so you can see it. Are your plugs connected series or parallel?

Mine has a splined shaft on the front of the engine. I'll make a short video to show where it is in a few days.

Is there anyway you could rig something up like a pair battery jumper cables from the battery hooked directly to the glow plugs for a few moments then remove and start it
@Possumliving
@Possumliving 6 лет назад
I have something similar to that now, but I use a piece of nichrome wire as a resistor to drop the voltage. I don't think the glow plugs are designed for direct 12 volts.

Im trying to get some money up in the next week so I can get a L1500, it comes with the bushhog, the bail spike, and a disc I think for 5500 for all that, im praying I can get something from my paw or from the bank. im tryin to start an AG business to help the future farmers of this country and help the economic growth of Wilson Co. I should clarify the glow plugs are to be in series with the indicator but in parallel with each other so it will be under 12v but not far off so if you do run 12 v to them 10 seconds is ideal but note the time will changed based on temp such as outside condition or if the plugs were just applied seconds earlier
@Possumliving
@Possumliving 10 лет назад
Thanks! This is exactly the information I have been looking for. I knew they were in parallel, grounded to the block and in series with the indicator. But my manual (downloaded as pdf) says 1.5 volts. 1.5 ohms makes more sense.

I know these little Kubota's are limited in there weight , but how about their power ? Like mowing , plowing , or any other work? The one I have is still being put together and having to make parts that were missing. We have bigger tractors but wanted one for plowing gardens in town or mowing small grown over places. But mainly they're just cute and have wanted one for years. My fenders were destroyed like it had rolled over or fell off a cliff. I made a smaller set and mounting them as far out as possible and gonna widen the floor boards and widen the brake pedals. my size 14 boot gets hung in the brake pedals. Other than my time I don't have alot of $$$$ in it and knowing it'll sell , but hope it has plenty of power to earn it's keep.
@Possumliving
@Possumliving 7 лет назад
Only 17 hp so it's limited in the size mower it can drive. Best kept to 4 feet. It does have good gearing though, so it will pull about anything if you add enough weight for traction. Great for pulling a disc harrow or a one or two-bottom turning plow.
