Kuksa is the name given to a wooden glass carved from wood, which is widely used in Scandinavian countries, especially Finland. Ideal kuksas are carved from a single piece of wood and made with natural products that are resistant to hot liquid contact and gain antibacterial properties.
Production
The bubble is formed into a rough shape, carefully dried to prevent the wood from cracking, and then shaped according to local custom. Birch burl kuksas last longer than plain birch kuksas. Originally the guksi or kuksa was widely used as a personal drinking glass in the Arctic regions; A well made guksi lasts a lifetime.
Maintenance
Guksi is traditionally simply rinsed with clean water and dried with a cloth after use. Detergent is not used, as many believe that it will harm the guksi.
modern guksis
Modern plastic case (or mug)
Today, a traditional guksi is difficult to find outside northern Scandinavia, partly because burls are rarely harvested in modern mechanized forestry. With the introduction of glass, ceramic and metal cups, the skill of performing such duodji arts has become an entertainment skill rather than a basic skill as it was in the past. It is also used today for Bushcraft. Used this way, it was carved by the person who would use it or a gift from a friend.
