I remember my grandma singing in the kitchen one time, when she saw me, she stopped. I'd only heard her sing quietly in church so I asked her to keep going. She said no, I asked why, and she ended up telling me that when she was little, a choir director told her she was tone-deaf so she never really sang in front of people again. She had a beautiful voice, but spent 70+ years hiding it because of what someone told her as a child. Your intro reminded me of that story, so thank you for the pep talk about using your voice 💚

My kids are asking me to use this to call them home. They are never more than 15 feet away from me but they LOVE it when I start singing this. They come running. It’s adorable. 🤣.

We have something similar, but in my country the song is only performed by men. The song is more of a african tribal chant that farmers use to send messages to their cow or sacred cows. Thank you for sharing this rare tradition, it is absolutely beautiful 😍

I don't have sheep- just cats. Been doing it my whole life. Learned it from my mother. We're not Swedish. But I'm a professional singer, and somehow, even though I do some of the same or similar exercises as Katie, I never made a mental connection between those calls and my music, it's just sounds I make that feel good, and communicate. I'm rethinking that now!

I'm a Dane in Canada so disconnected😢. I'm also first nations-Mohawk. I love learning the similarities between my cultures. I work with youth, going to use Kulning to get their attention 😂 I'm a natural at it! I already mimic the sounds without effort! I'm so grateful you're teaching!❤️💛🤍🖤 Sometimes indigenous teachings are kept hush hush because we're trying to preserve what's left since we're in the 7ish generation of colonization

Thank you for making this video! My mom's aunt would call her cows home from setra like this, near Dovre mountains and it was amazing. Her voice really complimented the scenic nature around us and it was so endearing hearing the cows approaching like "we're here" and "we're coming". Listening to kulning became some of my most treasured memories. I've always wanted to learn how to sing and now I'm thinking I should start with kulning because it's so much fun and can sound very beautiful.

This is so beautiful! I think the main problem for many is that we have nowhere out in the complete wilderness to practice this. I do actually like using my voice and singing, but I only do it private, due to having an awful and abusive upbringing. Stuff like that really does make it's mark on children, and it can stay with them all their lives. You have to fight really hard against your own programming in order to do something wild like this, and be ok with others thinking you are nuts. :P Perhaps one day I will get to try this....

How do you get that “rolling” sound ??
@ABCBom4thgen
@ABCBom4thgen 3 года назад
So in Germanic languages that have rolling rs you want to almost suck in and then out. It's like you roll it in reverse.. also swedish and norwegian is just... Idk how to explain it like there's a lot of to tongue stuff going on. I'd look up tongue exercises for Swedish

Is she using actual words in her language when calling? I understand the practice videos are sounds, like voice lessons when singing.
@la1454
@la1454 3 года назад
If I understand your question correctly (and I'm sorry if I didn't) I'd say that she isn't using any specific words when she is doing her actual kulning. I did hear one or two words in swedish at different points in the video, but overall her kulning were just sounds without a particular word in her language.

I don't know. On my farm, there is this lady neighbor that calls her cows by singing high pitched "Ahhhhhh" or something of that sort. I'm from United States. I see other foreigners (e.g. Japanese lady in Uk that loves Sweden) do kulning. I cant really say, because I am a foreigner. I believe they (Scandinavian) are understanding. I hope someone native can answer your question.

Culture isn't a museum piece, it's just something that means something to you. If it means something to you, who cares where you're from? We need to stop acting like culture is something that belongs to only one group, because cultures become stale and die if they aren't shared. This Norwegian doesn't care if you learn how to do this.
