I strongly recommend checking out the Kumho’s V730 tire. Great price and amazing track ability! Made it easy to feel the suspension and limit of traction

Blows my mind how we all learn in such different stages. The man who builds a 4 rotor AWD rx7 is just now learning what I’ve know for years, and what I view as basic knowledge of a good track car, but at the same time there’s no way I could build an AWD 4 rotor RX-7. I respect Rob so much more now.

So fun to watch you and Billy. He’s a great instructor, and made you so much faster in such a short time. Kudo’s to your FC build, even though we can hear the cutting out from the tune, the idea that you can go out and wail on it like that and not have it grenade is a testament to your ability as a builder. Time for bigger brakes, and some fine tuning, and that 1:31 will turn into a 1:29 or better. Congratulations, Rob! Well done!

Love the FC content! Rob, sorry if I missed it, but have you done the DTSS eliminator bushings (rear steer) for the rear suspension? The FC's have one floppy bushing that allows the rears to change toe angle based on dynamic loads. It was a cool feature when the car was new, but those bushings have turned to crap over the years. Replacing them with solid bushings makes the rear less prone to snapping out.
@HuhnK0t
@HuhnK0t 2 года назад
was done on the NA aswell back in the day, from my experience with swapping them out to PU ones i can only recommend to put in softer pu bushings in the spot where the softer original bushings were, the suspension is built for that and i can assure you it's way better than going all solid. this way the car keeps its natural feel but on steroids!
@TurboHappyCar
@TurboHappyCar 2 года назад
@@HuhnK0t Are you referring to the NA Miata? From what I can tell only the FC had the DTSS "Dynamic Tracking Suspension System", as a band aid for the cost-and-space-saving (janky) semi-trailing arm rear suspension. The NA has double wishbones front and rear which doesn't have the same bad habits (bump steer) as the semi-trailing arm. For the FC, 33 years later those bushings are pretty floppy and unpredictable. My first car was a 1987 non-turbo FC and I autocrossed it a couple of times. I made the mistake of pressing the brake pedal while turning and immediately spun. (I still have an aversion to trail braking 😂) I got and installed the DTSS but didn't autocross the car after that, so I can't tell ya from first hand exp if it worked. But it's it/was a pretty well known issue on rx7club.

Welcome to track racing. Your video brought me back to the late 80s when I took race driver training. Mine too was in a Mazda. A 1973 RX-3 with a peripheral port 13B. About 300HP in a 1700lb car. So much fun!!! you need proper race bucket seats in there, and 5-point harness. It makes a huge difference. You were flopping around pretty bad in there. One note. You told people they could use those tires in snow!!??? Highly not recommended. Light rain ok. Winter and snow, bad combo!

Just some tips: After some laps like that hold the car with a block on a wheel, if you hold It with brakes or handbrake the rotors will fry the pads and your brake fluid might boil. I noticed you were using a lot of force holding on to the seat i get the stock seats for what you want, but some propper bucket seats will change the car and your experience completly for the better. Otherwise keep it up and sign up to every track day you can and have fun and specially dont obsess over times. I have a Suzuki Swift track prepped here in Spain and take It out once a month, to confirm It is an addiction

I love seeing personal progress but I don't want to see every video with nothing but the fractional driving changes you've learned. Get yourself a 10Hz GPS (XGPS160 for example) and use RaceChrono app (Android or IPhone) for lap times, and divide track to multiple sectors (maybe from brake mark to brake mark). Then you can see what your lap time would be when best sector times are combined. RaceChrono has a lot of useful functions, and you can make data overlay videos with it.

Biggest gain from teaching is looking ahead. 2nd biggest is showing how much earlier you can get on the throttle with proper braking and corner entry speed. By braking just a couple feet earlier, you can set up to be at full throttle sooner, essentially extending the straight by 30-40 feet. Go in too fast and you can’t get back on the gas until you straighten up. Billy is creeping up on explaining the friction circle. Remember that cup of water in the InitialD anime? Same thing. His explanation of letting off and the car hooking is perfect. Same with threshold braking in a straight line. Can’t wait to see him whoop you in the superior chassis.

Track and more track please! Racecraft is so different to driving on normal roads but very rewarding. It will be good to watch the car evolve too as you learn how to set it up in race mode. Thanks for all your content. Great job!!

I came from the tire rack video where they tested a bunch of tires including this one and I couldn’t believe the performance and most importantly how much these cost compared to the other tires they tested. Most were in the $300++ range for my size 265/35/18 but these were under $200. I’m getting these for sure.

Pedal to the floor is a sure sign that you boiled the brake fluid. Assuming there are no leaks. Flush the entire system and put better brake fluid designed for racing.\ I recommend Endless RF-650. Used it in my old FC and have been using that in my Miata for years now. If you already did that then the only thing left is upgrading brakes and or cooling them.

Great stuff! Yea, looking thru the turn is game changing, especially on motorcycles. It feels weird and downright dangerous on bikes to not look where you are going (in the moment) but looking farther ahead is critical for preventing target fixation, a big contributing factor for going wide, when coming into a turn quickly.

Thank you for the quick aside on the throttle blips under braking. I have been struggling to figure that out for a while, and it's helpful to see _any_ instruction on it.

think of the grip patch as a pie chart, you can either be turning, braking or accelerating. you can do 2 at a time, but it is less efficient when trying to do 2 at once. the trick is transitioning between 2 modes (turning to accelerating, braking to turning, etc) in a smooth way that does not use more than 100% of the available grip

Technically doing 2 at once provides more than 100%. Don't believe me? Draw a circle. Go to 45* on the circle and draw a line to where it lands on the X and Y axis. It will = over 100% 😉👍
