Kung Fu vs Karate. In this video we explore Japanese Karate and Chinese Kung Fu! 空手 is Karate in Japanese & 功夫 is Gong Fu in Mandarin Chinese. Karate is the Japanese equivalent of Chinese Kung Fu. Both Martial Arts Styles are the national forms of Self Defense in their respective countries!
My friend Spencer Hinde uses his Karate training to show us 3 different Karate movements. Then, we show 3 Kung Fu techniques from Tiger Kung Fu, Crane, Kung Fu, and Bird Kung Fu which would be well suited to deal with this attack from our Karate expert! Kung Fu vs Karate - which is superior? Tell me in the comments below!
Thank you Pamela Mace for recording the video and thank you Joachim Maniam for lending your Martial Arts abilities making this "Kung Fu vs Karate" video possible!

Having a black belt in traditional karate, I was kinda embarrassed about this guys karate... front kick and that front hand punch? Why didn't he use a round kick, spinning back fist, or hammer fist? Yes the side kick is one of the most powerful kicks! But this guy had bad form, didn't shift or pivot right....

Also a black belt in Karate with 15 years of experience here, the karate dude is an amateur, he has some flaws in his techniques plus he is using basic simple moves which are taught for beginners (white belt kids) plus he is super slow. For your information, the Mai Gere is supposed to his the chest with your toes 90 degrees up, not the face, one last thing, his stance is totally wrong.

Man that guy doing the karate was killing me, he was so off balance the entire time. His form wasn't very good and like I said the worst part was his lack of balance in his strikes. It looked like maybe he was trying to put too much power into his strikes creating the imbalance, either way he needs a lot more training from a good school.

Kung Fu & Tai Chi Center w/ Jake Mace I would say that he authentic kung fu is almost lost unless you find a true sifu, but in terms of Karate there are more pragmatic and spirited teachers around mostly because it is a fusion of southern shaolin kung fu, japanese taijutsu and okinawan rigorous close combat so you have 3 distinctive historical and geographical references which a common feature between them is "one blow, one kill" or the "Ichigeki hissatsu" concept. This is more tangible if you practice styles like Kyokushinkai. You could also add jujutsu and kendo's footwork, accuracy and promptness to this story and wrap it up as the eastern Chinese-Japanese art of war and self defence. However, in a wider scope, if we imagine Kung Fu as a temple and a general category, Karate would be one if its main pillars and as a whole, Kung Fu encompasses almost everything martial-religious over at least 30 centuries in mid to east Asia. There isn't nothing more fierce and effective, magnificient and creative than real Hung Ga, Wing Chun, Xingyiquan, Taijiquan or Bajiquan, (particularly) Shaolinquan etc. in real situations if the practitioner absorbed the essence under instruction of a real master. So lets forget this absurd question of " Which is better ...? ". There is (and has been) only one Martial Art as the natural physical expression of humankind for survival and then for purifying the spirit. - 3rd Dan in Shito-ryu Karate-Do - 2rd Dan in Goju-ryu Karate-Do - currently practicing Shaolin Luohanquan and Xingyiquan

Manoucher Nik After WWII what is 沖縄県(おきなわけん) Okinawa Ken or the prefecture of Okinawa would fall under US control (USCAR) from 1945-1972. 3/4 of all US military in Asia would be stationed on Okinawa. This would give the US G.I. 18 months to train under 沖縄空手先生 or Okinawan Karate teachers. On US bases in Okinawa such as Camp Foster, Camp, Kinser and even Kadena would have Okinawan Karate teachers come aboard and teach the 米国軍人(べいこくぐんじん)Beikoku Gunjin or US military G.I. After the GI would do their 18 months on the Rock (Okinawa) they would rotate back to CONUS or the US. Some would open 道場(どうじょう) Dojo(s) back in their hone towns.This would lead to Karate becoming very popular in the US around the 1960s. Hawai'i would also play a role on the spread of Karate to the mainland too. GIs who would be stationed there could also learn many 流(りゅう)Ryu or styles of Karate. The 1st 極真会館空手の道場 or Kyokushin Kaikan Karate dojo to open outside of Japan was on Honolulu, Oahu, Hawai'i under the late Mr. Lowe 師範 (Master). This is one of the leading reasons why 空手道(からてどう)Karate-Do has spread through the US. And if you look even a little closer you will see that a lot of Karate Dojo(s) were found around US bases.

Its not that I am an expert, but a fight does not go on in a mathematical fashion as it is analyzed in the video. There are no three most prominent moves in Karate from my little understanding of the art. Anything that suits the circumstances becomes prominent for that moment. If these are the defenses in Kung fu to the Karate techniques, there are counters to the defenses too. But the question is how well the person executes those defensive and countering techniques in a fight.

@siddified
@siddified 8 лет назад
agreed on your excellent analysis. although on the part of comparing fighting styles I must disagree, if the criterium is about effectiveness. there is absolutely a lot of difference in effectiveness between different styles. some are purely esthetic and useless in a real fight or selfdefense situation, and some are sufficiently realistic to provide the practitioner with serieus fighting skills. practically all of them have basic striking techniques but there is variation in the practicality of them, plus just knowing some striking techniques without having trained to apply them dynamically and effectively, and to be able to take some as well, is just too far from enough. not to mention other essential elements such as distances, grappling, weapons, and multiple opponents. however if the criterium is purely about esthetics, then it is solely a matter of taste and art in the meaning of esthetic art, not art in the meaning of practical skill. my opinion is however that martial arts pretend to teach practical skills, and therefor they should fulfill that promise or not pretend it in the first place. for example, I've never had a judoka pretend to know how to fight, although interestingly I'm sure a good judoka can wipe the floor with most of the best Kung Fu practitioners, all of whom do nothing but pretend to be good fighters, even to the point of claiming mystical supernatural powers.
@chambzors1
@chambzors1 8 лет назад
+BlackDiamond oh yeah i see your point. Theres is room for comparison of styles with criteria. You mentioned some martial arts teach skills aesthetically (as we say "flowery and pretty") and look like they are pretending (or symbolic of real application), and that skills should but taught on there practical application only. But i believe martial arts are still art in the same way painting and music is art. And most I techniques that i teach, i start with the traditional execution of the technique and teach application or how its used in real life later, sometimes never. learning the real life application of the technique is earnt through correct demonstration of the traditional technique. i dont think any teacher advocates students getting into real fights. but ill admit a younger less wiser me did a few times and what I learnt about martial arts of those few minutes could have been missed had It never happened.

That's not a good front kick very weak. In karate you do your front kick with the ball of the feet curling the toes Back. roundhouse kick in karate is with top of foot but doing this in front kick is weak and will break your foot probably. Anyone else agree?

From watching your friend Spencer I can assume he does Full contact Kyoushin-kai Karate rather than the more traditional Japanese styles of Karate like Shotokan (it's easy to see by the way he punches). What styles of Kung Fu do you do? I've seen some different styles like Bajiquan, Wing-Chun, White Crane, Shaolin (although Shaolin I'm assuming is a very broad term encompassing many different styles), Wushu, and of course Sanda (which is more competitive). Good video by the way!

+Kokainuser Did you read the part where I said majority? Yes, there r few good kung fu styles too like Sanshou/Sanda, n Shuai Jiao n practiced by few good or decent fighters like Cung Le. For karate, its mostly kyokushin n their offsprings, such as seido kaikan, seido juku, etc that proved karates effectiveness. Gsp, andy hug, machida, uriah hall all have trained karate. But guess what? Theyre effective styles of karate, not bullshit like shorinryu, wado ryu, goju ryu, etc.

Sanshou is just copying muy tai but adding throws. The techniques are more similar to muy tai than traditional kung fu, which should be the case because a muy tai guy would beat up someone who only knows kung fu. The Chinese govt probably realized how bad kung fu was in competition and started copying styles that work.

@siddified
@siddified 8 лет назад
***** I'm not talking about full throttle, I'm talking about proper techniques that would actually have a practical effect in a fight, which is what martial arts are supposed to be about. Martial in this context means fight. Everything this guy does here will not happen like that in a real fight. It's a fantasy fight.
@siddified
@siddified 8 лет назад
***** oh man where do I start.. First of all I'm pretty issue-free. I just comment and correct some mistakes and certain delusions that are very persistent in the world of martial arts. For example another one u you just stated; Kung Fu is in no way similar to traditional boxing. It was called Chinese boxing by the British in Hong Kong because boxing at the time was the only striking fight sport the British knew, but obviously it was different and hence CHINESE boxing and not just 'boxing'. My mind is so open I need to build a roof on it. It seems that you arm the one stuck on unrealistic dogmas. Also, you did it again. Your statement about what exists outside the octagon is a strawman, as I never commented on that. The choice is not between Kung Fu and the octagon, at best the choice posed here is between karate and Kung Fu and although that's not what I originally commented on, I did later explain that karate would then be the realistic choice because this style of Kung Fu displayed here is not realistic. To expand on that statement, only full contact kickboxing type styles of Kung Fu, like Sanda or San Shou for example, are realistic even just a little bit only. Your statement about 'tricks' lacks every nuance and is basically another noob dogma. I'm the end it is about the most practical system of techniques and the most practical experience. Kung Fu is usually nothing but tough acting ballet, and never have I seen any Kung Fu practitioner use Kung Fu effectively against any decently trained fighter. It teaches only very marginally effective strikes and kicks into the air, usually with form over effect, and no actual fighting skills beyond that. As for Kung Fu styles, pretty much only San Shou and wing chun do anything related to realistic full contact sparring and they are by design still extremely limited in terms of practicality. Conclusion is still the same.
@siddified
@siddified 8 лет назад
***** lol sure I'm the complete idiot... I did give substantial arguments, you are the one that didn't. U just keep creating strawman fallacies and polarising the discussion, which is what is really not only childish but shows your total commitment to childish and uninformed dogmas. I've given mature and realistic arguments, moreover my arguments come from a lifetime of practical experience whereas yours clearly come from your ass. Anyway, you have now shifted the discussion to ad hominems, another fallacy of which you're apparently unaware that it only makes u look uninformed, unintelligent and immature. Not only that but you are now stating total misconceptions like Kung Fu being similar to traditional boxing. Are you aware that any one with any knowledge of boxing will now dismiss you as a total fool? Also, again you come up with a self imagined conclusion about my persona. I never said anything about MMA or my opinion about it. Didn't even mention it. Yet u conclude something about me all by yourself in your own fantasy. Also you state that I'll ''come across the wrong person and be humbled ''. Lol seriously? You don't know anything about me dude. Besides that, neither this video nor the general discussion was about me so I'll take your frustration and attempts at insult as an admittance of your lack of knowledge and arguments. I wasn't even set out to make u look like a fool but u not-so-gracefully took it upon yourself to prove it to everybody and take away all doubt. That's quite amusing especially considering you call yourself 'zenmaster'. So I guess you don't even know what that is all about either. :) thanks for being entertaining, as in, you know, like a clown. Since u make it so clear you don't have any insightful comments or arguments but only immature fallacies, this discussion is over and you can go back to your homework.

This video does not do Karate justice. You picked the three most basic attacks that can be found in just about any martial art. If you wanted to showcase karate, you should have demonstrated 3 karate techniques in addition to the 3 kung fu techniques. Those kicks and punches do not look like traditional karate kicks and punches at all and as far as the kung fu goes, it doesn’t seem like those moves would have a lot of practical value in a fight.
@Heimdal001
@Heimdal001 6 лет назад
Those kung fu moves would not have a lot of practical value at all, because they aren't even kung fu moves. They're vaguely similar, but it looks very much like he saw the moves once, imitated them, and filled in all the conceptual blanks on how to use it on his own.

mike tags It depends on the Kung Fu style, I train Kung Fu Fei In, and on the 1st training our teacher told the new students: "Do not expect to become fighters fast. A karate guy who has trained 2 years of karate would defeat a Kung Fu Fei In guy who has spent 2 yrs training that style. But, Karate is a lot more limited(I trained Shotokan, it is full of bullshit now that I know some real fighting moves), and after another year or two, the karate guy's improvement will have slowed a lot, and urs will be going even faster. You need to train years to become fighters and I wont give up on you." Fei In basically means flying eagle and has everything in it. And the more I learn from it the deeper it gets, and my imagination becomes better and better, I can recreate fights in my head like never before due to the moves I have learned. Although I havent trained for 3 months because my leg got operated I still want to train it and study it.

mike tags I have 9 kyu in Shotokan, I agree. :) sorry the front kick esp was leg not tucked under rear to start with and hight level of head up and down movement and body motion moving back. Punches need to be more tucked in and rolled out loose then clench only on final. I think this video is some good help for basics ideas, but the basics here are not of Japan. Waltham abbey JKA Club UK basics 99% of the work in training even by made by Sensei each time it has to be correct or you cannot progress. I have not trained in 15 years and I remember what it is to make 9th Kyu for JKA 2 to 3 years training. 5+ times black belts at club will train basics for weeks or the complete time in their career it is not forgotten for anyone at any time. Good luck. Yes Shotokan is best effective.

Hello, first thank you for all the amazing videos, you inspire me Jake to be a better person and I am sure you do to many people. I have little experience with kung fu, and tail chi in the choylee fut system and some of Shotokan karate (I am not sure if I spelled it correctly) and I can say that both have their own set of skills that it depends on how the individual follows its foundation and principles. Some people prefer karate because they believe it fits them, but I am pretty flexible like yourself by saying that both are competent depending on both the instructor and the student. I recently became involved in kung fu again and picking it up after 20 years, I am 35 now I feel I still feel like I have it within me. I would like to get more involved and possibly train harder to promote a healthier and better version of myself. Keep making great videos because you are definitely inspiring many young people out there. Best of luck and wishes, always.

For anyone who is watching the video, I'm just a Karate Green Confirmed belt, but if you wanna listen to my tip I know that the techniques were performed differently to the way they were tought to me, I learned that the front kick pushes towards the enemy hitting with the body part called in japaneese "Koshi", it does not hit point upwards; this performed kick is called "Kin-geri" (I don't actually know how you spell it sorry). The fist was good, but in karate we must have form and control of our body so you must keep your feet completely on the floor, the hip turns inwards to give the punch the needed power to strike and to keep good form. Finally the side kick, so I've read the comments and... the first kick performed was good, it's hard to turn your feet so you actually hit with the japaneese bodypart called "Sokuto" (Sword part of the feet, the side part of the foot in fact is likely to a sword) the kicks performed in second part, with Jake's block were not Yoko-geri. The performed kick is in fact named "Ushiro-geri". I hope you appreciate my knowledge and to help anyone, I'd like to mention again this is how things were taught to me ^^
