as a practitioner of both rope dart and meteor hammer I can easily attest to the difficulty in learning such a weapon,as well as how painful it is if you get too cocky with it. I myself have a few scars from practice myself. And yes it is the most difficult of all weapons to use. but the silver lining? when you get over the fear of using this particular weapon all other weapons seem so much less intimidating.
If a long distance fight becomes close combat, no way am I going to face an adversary with a rope around my own neck! Good entertainment, but as a weapon, it seems highly specialized.
@@jamespardee1116 Certainly not a long term weapon. Good for surprise attacks or a long reach strike, but yes one would have to switch to another weapon shortly after. It does require some training. Learning the moves isn't difficult. Learning to be accurate, how to generate power for an effective hit takes time. But I enjoy it,plus I'm the only one in my school that does it.
More importantly, it's easy to hide a rope dart, chain whip or meteor hammer under your clothes, in a bag, or pocket and they make effective weapons, even against armored opponents. Not to mention, you could attack from 20 feet away if you wanted to.
this is honestly far from what you'd want to use in a zombie apocalypse, especially against a horde of zombies charging you at once, the constant strikes against bodies would hurt them, but also make you lose any momentum for other strikes, as well as you just gave said zombies something to easily grab onto, and it's tied to your wrist.
No far from it, for one it’s complex and takes years of training to use, and the guy before me summed up the impracticalities of such a weapon, you could put the same amount of time learning a bow or a sword and it would be way more effective, use bats clubs knives and maces if you want a weapon that requires little skill
Apparently the weapon of the assassin, Connor Kenway isnt the Chinese rope dart as described, the rope dart of Connor is more of a throwing knife that he uses to hang people from trees, not hand held for combat.
This guy has really mastered the weapons. I have a rope dart myself and I'm afraid to do anything that is capable of hurting someone (bad experience swinging it, don't ask). When the narrator said that the rope dart is extremely hard to master, IT'S EXTREMELY HARD TO MASTER, TRUST ME.
although russianskin says the documentary is called fight night, when i downloaded the documentary, it was called something like the Top Ten Kung Fu Weapons (this particular excerpt is from the flexible weapons sectioin)
This would be an awesome weapon set for a Dynasty Warriors character. Start Weapon-Rope Dart-upgrade to meteor hammer-then something with a cool name and appearance
I can sorta do this, woo hoo! But this skill level, Im gonna have to study this vid closely for a long time to get 33% of this degree of badassness +fav. Thanx 4 Posting!
The cloth is used as distraction. The opponent sees the cloth and dodges the cloth. But the dart is placed a foot away, hitting the opponent unsuspectadly
Impressive flashy and cool weapons, but there is a reason why swords, spears and bows are the most wide-spread : they are just more reliable and easy to learn to use.
@abattoirflux I will side with the meteor hammer. The rope dart isn't as heavy as the hammer, and I imagine flinging it straight forward won't make much of an impact. Swinging it is also out of the question, as the dart doesn't have much mass and can't do blunt damage. The hammer, however, is pretty much a rock on a chain. Having a rock thrown at you isn't fun. You can also swing it like a flail, and slam it from above, like a "'meteor", which will easily do some serious damage.
early rope darts were actually much more dangerous as they were actual sharpened blades unlike the ones we see and use today. they can be made to stab.
The rope dart might break a hand(if it was a very lucky hit) or a nose, but it's not doing any serious bone breaking. The problem is that in comparison to the meteor hammer, (or even a similarly size but rounded object) the rope dart spreads the force of impact out much more the a rounded object, which would concentrate it.
@homemadePAUL I imagine the idea is rather than block to use the unpredictability of the rope dart's attacks to keep the opponent off balance or confused, or simply keeping a distance. Hard to close the gap with face full of rope dart. Barring that, tripping would work.
He will use it in combat. Not constantly though. More like Scorpion from Mortal Kombat. He'll use it to bring enemies to him to strike with his weapon.
I just bought a meteor hammer yesterday, but the weight seems to be a bit smaller than the one shown here. Still, can't wait until I finally give it a whirl! :D
@LivingForMusicOnly Lol. If you looked closer you would see the video is watermarked with not only the network, but the show's title as well! National Geographic - Fight Night
Ok, now I am curious, what would be this next "most lethal chinese weapon of ancient times" he would talk about in the vid that "not just smash heads, but remove them"? Is it really something as obvious as a sword? xD
the 'deadlier weapon' that 'removes heads' he mentioned at the end was known as the flying guillotine...yeh, let u figure that one out. also i saw this program in singapore, it was mad.
Lol, true. Once the rope is cut, that's it. Then I guess you could use the cut rope for other means and the head of the dart as like a blunt dagger? I dunno lol. Try cutting it when it's spinning that fast though O.O just getting close is dangerous enough... like walking into a wind turbine O.o
Seriously if you want to have a go at meteor hammer buy 2 balls of string. use one ball of string as the rope and the other as the hammer/dart. that way when you catch yourself in the back of the head (which you will) your eyes don't pop out the front.
While not a martial art like boxing or general fisticuffs. Wearing full plate with a shield and a sword, and getting within close quarters while the rope is around the neck and shoulders of the Rope user is effective. Or, just pull a gun on the Rope user.
that certainly doesn't look like it could pull someone and hang them from a branch. It probably could take out an eye or something, but I think ac3 has portrayed it a bit inaccurately
The simple sling might also be a great weapon to incorperate into the kung fu arsenal as it is super powerful for its size and is a great challenge to shoot well. check out the youtube film "Ancient Sling Weapon".
You can see at about :22 how little force there actually is behind the attack, when you attempt to throw it point first. Unless you hit somebody in the eye with it, you wouldn't be able to do any serious damage using the weapon that way.
Gogo the teenage assassin/bodyguard in Kill Bill and Jackie Chan in Shanghai Noon just to name a few places i have seen it done. it would be insanely difficult to beat someone capable of using this weapon.
