After making it into Tsukuba's top 5 fastest drivers with a TC2000 time of 52.454, Kunihiko Bando had not been able to best that time set in December of 2019. So after the 2021 season, he made the difficult decision to scrap his current JZZ30 and begin work on a new build. After 2 long years of rebuilding the machine from an entirely different chassis, he is finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
I visited Bando's workshop in Ibaraki a few weeks ago to see the new car, and document the car towards the end of the build before we see it fully assembled and on the track for its first shakedown. The car was built to the WTAC regulations as Bando plans to bring the car to Sydney once again after getting the car dialed in here in Japan. While the Soarer retains the same engine built by AutoBahn, the rest of the build is almost entirely new.
The car's initial shakedown took place last week at Hiro Sinoi Circuit and went without issue. Part 2 of this cars rebuild is planned for next week, after we accompany Bando and the team to Motegi for full-power testing.

Full carbon body, engine shifted back, cage integrated to the shock towers, side exit exhaust, bosch ABS, sequential trans. The great thing is that there's so many of these guys over there building to this level. Love Japanese Time Attack!

I love that he’s keeping the 2JZ and going as crazy as possible. The build quality is insane and the fact that he mimicked the early 2000’s style roll cage from JGTC where they would purposefully make the cage tight and low to lower the center of gravity even further.

Yeah, exactly. The roof and upper body weighs next to nothing, no real purpose other than to retain the cars natural body lines

Can't wait to see this car back in Sydney for WTAC. I hope to also have my JZA80 Supra back at WTAC after a 10 year Hiatus!

An absolutely incredible machine!! Mind blowing amount of engineering and fabrication. Is there any info as to why a LHD config was chosen?

Wouldnt have thought the engine could be moved back that far with the original firewall needing to remain intact for wtac. I assume to go this crazy though it wouldve all had to be approved beforehand. New car is wild!
@NaritaDogfight
@NaritaDogfight 5 месяцев назад
the chassis (b) clause is pretty vague for modification, which is odd because (a) is 'the original firewall must remain'. There is also the grandfather clause that would possibly allow it for Bando

@@NaritaDogfight yeah ultimately if Ian/WTAC team say it's okay then it's okay. I know a few complained about ferras' non compliant car last year but in the end the event approved him. Hopefully this car makes it here this year. Looks amazing

@@toddxhiggins haha yeah, a clause like that sort of contradicts the point of class rules in the first place

Do you know if the steering position shifted to the left side of the car so the side exit exhaust could be routed through the right side of the cabin, or did this chassis start out as a left hand drive Lexus SC?
@NaritaDogfight

Yeah, prioritize exhaust efficiency. Bando says, 'I will sit anywhere to make the car go faster.'

hahaha if that's true, he really must have gotten the weight distribution right. Also LHD would be an advantage on an anti clockwise circuit like SMP
