"I don't know how I'm going to get across the water and don't know it'll there will be any body to talk to " Start of some some of the best adventures right there.......
I loved this! It took someone in Kupreanof a lot of time to put all those trails in for people. Thanks to Bobby for helping to make this video possible. Petersburg is a great looking little town. Really enjoyed seeing these places. 😊👍 Thanks so much.
Beautiful drone shots. Area pathway with shapes of trees, water leaving patterns of its flow. It's definitely a experiences of exposure to Alaska's many parts. What a wonderful experience meeting Bobby. Memories to reacall forever. Great people you've met. Thanks for the experiences.
We just watched this video and were awed by the beauty. The trails were great, so pristine, and peaceful. We could hear an eagle calling and other animal sounds. Thank you for going there and showing everyone the beauty of Alaska. Keep up the great work you do. It's the only way some of us will ever get to see these places.
WOW, another great video, and yet another video that hits close to home. Having grown up in SW Missouri with an interest in history, I have visited some of the places you have produced videos on in SW MO, NW AR, NE OK and SE KS, and I learned so much more from your videos. Now you are again close to a place I lived at from 1977 => 1982, Alaska. A really fascinating place. Thank you for all the work and then sharing.
@TravelwithaWiseguy did you get to hike up Raven's Roost or anything? I'm in Texas but lived in Petersburg for 7 years. I'm moving back as soon as possible!❤
In a word, "Incredible!" What an interesting excursion! Can't say that I would go to a place like this, but find it fascinating that in this day and age, there is still a place so pure with nature that there are no roads. Good for them that they fought off the evil department of transportation! Question for you - in parts of the video, it sounds like it was raining. Was it, and what was the temperature while you were hiking? Thanks very much for taking us along! So enjoyable!
When the day arrives that I can no longer tolerate the door-to-door salesmen from the local cable and home security companies, I now know where to go. Seriously, I would love to spend a summer in Petersburg, it looks beautiful. Good video Coach!
Amazing photography. So glad you got to experience the enormous beauty of Petersburg, AK. It is our very favorite Alaska community. Truly other worldly.
I was born in Petersburg and lived in Kupreanof. Unfortunately my dad passed when I was very young and we moved to Colorado to be closer to family, so I don’t remember it at all. This video brought tears to my eyes. Thank you so much for sharing it!
Goodness John, I was wondering what you would do if you didn't meet Bobby. Seemed like everyone was gone but then I thought since it was Saturday maybe they were in Petersburg buying supplies. Sure was a beautiful place but very wet. The walkways looked wet and narrow. So glad you made it safely as being a black bear sanctuary I thought you might come across a bear but thankfully you just came across some deer. What an adventure you had. Happy trails to you and God bless.
The wooden walkways were great. But the last trail was very wet. And it was raining a lot. He said the bears aren’t around much right now - thankfully.
@@TravelwithaWiseguy I could tell that it was very wet and a little bit slippery, I would think. I was glad there weren't any bears. But the deer were adorable. I'm glad you had a great time. Happy trails to you and God bless.
I just came across your video by chance and it makes me a little homesick. I was born and raised in Petersburg. Awesome place to grow up. One thing i done miss though is the rain. 32 years on the island with soggy feet and after another 22years off the island and the webbing between my toes has finally gone away. 😂 glad to have stumbled across your video.
It’s one of the most fascinating places I’ve seen. Very different to America because of the very thick almost tropical looking forest growth. Looking at the temperature range it’s not too bad and winter I think compared to central Canada and North America??? Unless I got the place wrong in Google search….
Technically it is a rainforest so that makes sense (I didn’t know that originally). Correct the temps aren’t bad in July but like Bobby said the winters are brutal.
@@TravelwithaWiseguy you know thinking about it - it reminds me of parts of Tasmania in Australia - especially on the West Coast. That would not be as cold as Canada; but the bush is very similar.
Hi John, this video was amazing, I'm sure this must have been one of your most adventurous yet, I loved to see the deer who seemed so relaxed despite your presence, all the best from Oz.
This was remote but still close to a town for supplys and a area noted for Bears your luck was on your side this explore .Thank you for the tag along 🇺🇸
Amazing amount of greenery when you think that as Bobbie said the winters are brutal. What dichotomy there must be between seasons. Good job on this one John, the video was very well done. Honked and waved as I rode by the university in my travels this weekend... mostly in the rain
Hey John , Joe Dial here!! Shawna and I just found your channel a few days ago ! I was watching one of them and then I was like hey I know this guy 😂!! Love your channel . I have watched quite a few of them you going across Oklahoma a friend of mine Wrote a book on The Main streets of Oklahoma, Okie stories from every country! I think it would help when traveling!! My son has a RU-vid channel also, it’s Tommy Dial . You can see us all building a cabin in the woods and building a small town for our family!! We will be watching keep up the good work ❤️🙏
I know what you are saying. I am 75, so well past the stage of being a gypsy. And to have the Wiseguy give us such wonderful laid back tours of all these places is fantastic! Especially to this quiet, away from the hustle and bussel place of such beauty. Due to age, I am not sure I could enjoy the trip. But it was priceless to go along with the Wiseguy! Most fun!
perfect spot, all the alone time you want and then a minute's ride to supplies, coffee whatever you like. reminds me of my time in northern Vancouver island.
Hey Coach. I've never seen a landscape quite like Kupreanof, even the ground cover is not familiar, fascinating. Bobby's doing a good job on that canoe. It's just my opinion, of course, but, It's a nice place to visit ,but I couldn't live there, and that's not to say it's not cool. Happy Trails.
What a cool place. The landscape was bizarrely beautiful. Some of those bridges were a bit sketchy. You are truly a n adventurous person. Thank you for the opportunity to see this wonderful place. Take care. 😊
Nice Video. Lealea has been in the North Harbor for 12 years but we have yet to visit Kupreanof. Holy cow! The bell from the Bowfin!? Thanks for the tour. You can see how we got stuck in Southeast Alaska.
Beautiful! I hope you had bear spray.😂 If it wasn’t for the winters, I could totally live there. Another great spot I probably won’t get to visit. Thanks for taking me along. Alaska has always seemed to tug at my heart. ❤️🙏😎👍
This was so beautiful from start to finish...all the tall trees and ferns 💚 I've never looked into Alaska at all, and I'm so glad you've shown so much of it's natural terrain in this series. It doesn't look at all as I expected - I think I was just thinking about glaciers or something like that. But in this forest you can see what happens when nature takes its course and is left alone to do so - all the huge tree bases uprooted by who knows what (storms? disease?). I used to see that in Louisiana all the time after hurricanes, but they were cleared away within a few weeks or months. But not in this forest - it's just incredible to look at. A small maritime town with no roads sounds about as good as it can get (imo)....loved the sweet little seal (?) at 7:00...what treasures Daniel and Bobby were, being able to talk with someone who'd been the mayor there had to be seriously gratifying, priceless. Did you happen to see any seaplanes while you were there? Thank you for this video, and the entire series, I love that it's so authentic, rather than leaning towards "touristy".
Thanks so much! Those trees were really interesting and looked like they had been laid over for a long time. Maybe the brutal winter weather does that? 🤷🏼♂️ yeah I never would’ve thought about Alaska being like this so thankful for this RU-vid opportunity to take me there! Didn’t see any seaplanes this time.
Loving the sounds of the birds! I'm totally using this video as a "Stationary Bike Cycling" video. Have you ever thought of doing that with your hikes? Making videos of strictly hiking? Many people watch such videos (ie: Virtual Trail Running) while exercising on treadmills and/or stationary bicycles.
As pretty as it all is, that part of the world is very unforgiving, as noted by the plaques on the dock. I've been to Pelican AK and even had dinner at the world famous Rose's Bar. Sorry it wasn't sunny for you while there. Now you know why Bobby was dressed like he was(lol). Glad you got to experience the "local flavor" of what's left of a time gone by......
Looks like you had quite a journey on that island and even better, talking to one of the locals with expertise! I can't even imagine what that place would be like during the wintertime.
Awesome video my Friend. An area that is truly serene and relaxing would be a great place to visit......if we were younger. The bench on the trail, I think we found Jake, from State Farm, knowing Kupreanof is a bear sanctuary, now I have questions about HIS coverage.....🤔😉 As always John, Good Job, keep up the excellent work, and we look forward to the next one. Stay Safe and Be Blessed 🙏🇺🇸
Does Incorporated mean that they have a post office sheriff local offices, maintenance and rubbish collection. (we don’t think of towns Incorporated or not here in Australia)
Usually it means they have a mayor or city council and town boundaries of some kind. Most have post offices but Kupreanof doesn’t. I’m sure they go to Petersburg to get their mail.
wrong island. we mostly get blackbear, but there was a sighting of a brown bear on mitkov last month. and over a dozen bear in trash reports a couple weeks ago.
Loved this video of island. Would love to go there. Glad no bears. Have been to fairbanks airport alot. Small but very nice, clean and kept up. Their tsa is not bad either.
Awesome adventure, since the gentleman stated that you were basically in a rain forest. Which we typically regard as a warm subtropical environment. What was the temperature??? Did/do you carry bear spray just in case??? Amazing travels and so glad you have the opportunity and will to seek out and go to so many places in this vast country. Well done 🇺🇸
they love their cosplay, so more than a few times a year you will see them running around in their furs and horned helmets and the valkyries are nice to look at too.
I do believe that place is the most bizarre place I have ever seen you at. But, it really is the nicest (not kidding). I think the thought of walking up on a bear, without you or the bear knowing is kind of (to say the least) scary. Be good, be safe !! Glad you are OK.
Jake was a cousin of mine. He went out grouse hunting on Mother's Day. He slipped and fell on the ice, and the gun went off, hit him in the head. Very sad, he was a great kid.
Unfortunately no. I did look them up but it would’ve taken an entire month and maybe $20k to do it because you’d have to fly to tiny airports for most of them.
Just imagine if you fell and got injured. How long would it be before someone would happen upon you. I assume there's no cell service there. That's definately Far Out there brother. Thumbs up!😎👍
I lived in West Petersburg from 1968 thru 1981 which is long before they rail roaded the second class city in there and started calling it Kupernof. It was far better back in them days and i for one will never go there to visit for any reason what so ever. They said to preseve their way of life but how about all the people that were there before they showed up.
@@TravelwithaWiseguy when we went to Seattle we were up early every day but went to bed or got really sleepy when everybody else was staying up doing stuff. 7 pm is 9 pm at home and mom would already be in bed by then lol
A visit to the Chamber Office in Petersburg would have provided much more information to prepare for your excursion over to Kupreanof. For instance, when visiting a rainforest - you need boots and a waterproof jacket, maybe a hat! Exposure can be an issue if you're not prepared! Also - did Bob mention the fox farms? And Tlinget.... is pronounced Clink-it the Tl sound is a hard K or hard C sound. Nice overview, but so much more is available to learn....
Yes I did visit the Chamber in Petersburg as well as the museum. And I emailed the Kupreanof city clerk, called the office numerous times. I asked about a dozen different people to meet with me and ran into dead ends every time. I only ran into Bob by luck. There’s more to the story but I don’t want to be negative - everyone was very nice, but the situation was difficult to find me help. Believe me I did ask A LOT.
@TravelwithaWiseguy So sorry everyone was non responsive... there are some fascinating stories out there and some other characters who would have made your visit much more rewarding! I myself have a year round home in Petersburg and an off-grid getaway on Kupreanof - it's just not in the town boundaries of the incorporated city. I did enjoy your video and have shared it with family and friends. Thank you
You didn't even go up the trail to the lake!, it's so amazing up there Lame! LOL That said, my father is from the area, and lived in PSG for a long time, before the family moved south. He took my brother and I on several trips back to PSG, which inspired me to embark on several years of working the summer Salmon Purse Seine seasons. I absolutely love SEAK, Petersburg in particular.... Question to anyone who may know, who might have sent shots across the bow of our 16ft skiff headed up the mouth of Petersburg Creek around July of 2003? (and yes, I mean exactly what I said, G**** shots....) Kupreanof wasn't so friendly that particular year, but never had an issue since.... Nonetheless, I love PSG, I love SEAK, and the region will always be in my heart and home.
There is always something. Such as him talking about fighting off the DOT with their obsession of putting in a road. The locals didn't want it, but the government was pushing. It is a thankless job that most do not get paid for in the smaller towns. The mayor is the one everyone goes to with a gripe.
@@ronfullerton3162 I was just thinking hardly any residents to watch out for. No crime to speak of so don't have to worry about that. No traffic to worry about so don't have to deal with funding road repairs or installing traffic lights or ... I wonder if they even have local cops they have to pay for. No businesses asking for this and that. Doesn't seem to be much economy of any kind. I reckon what local tax revenue does come in must go toward keeping the trails kept up. But really I just couldn't find much of anything the mayor must do. But you're right, being a voice for the residents is always the job even in a small town like that and making sure the state and federal government know their opinions on issues such as adding a road in the town.
@@travis303 We would hope that their mayor would be an easy job. But it is still a government position, with all those fun governmental characteristics. And we all know how government can change anything easy into the best headache ever.
