Kuro Obi - Black Belt (Just part of Movie)
Few Funakoshi's princeples:
- Karate-do begins with courtesy and ends with rei.
- There is no first strike in karate.
- Spirit first, technique second.
- Do not think that you have to win, think rather that you do not have to lose.
- Victory depends on your ability to distinguish vulnerable points from invulnerable ones.
- Beginners must master low stance and posture, natural body positions are for the advanced.
Sensei Taiji Kase: First block, then see what happend.

By saying "Don't Punch or Kick" he is saying don't initiate the attack.This movie illustrates the real original reason for the Okinawans to create Karate in the first place. Unarmed Okinawans, Japanese with swords.The reason for the one punch or one kick to end a fight is the unarmed Okinawan usually had only one chance to defeat the Japanese in a Sworded Affair. Good Movie.
@danielhaire6677

Kabuto had that because it was also Okinawan originally. When the Japanese invaded Okinawa, the first thing they did was ban all weapons beyond the staffs carried by monks. Thus the Okinawans developed both styles for defense.

An anecdote about a Russian commander during the Civil War (1917-1922) and his faithful assistant Petka. Once the Russian commander Vasily Chapaev sent his assistant Petka to the Far East to study martial arts. Petka returns a year later. And commander Chapaev decided to check what Petka had learned during this time. Commander Chapaev took him to the barn and left him there, and then he began to launch karatekas to him one at a time. 10 karatekas were launched - not a single one returned. After a while, Petka comes out of the barn and wipes his saber on his shoulder and says: - Well, fools .., who with a bare heel runs on a saber!

One of the basic principles I was taught as a kid when starting out in Goju - a block is more than a block, but a strike itself. Every time an opponent attacks you, he is in essence only attacking and hurting himself. In thisa movie, they are using Shotokan Karate.

I've always been of the opinion that immediately disabling your opponent is safer for everyone. If you break his ankle in the beginning, you don't have to slowly beat him into a coma, and you don't risk yourself either. Though I have never practiced it, from what iv'e seen traditional Okinawan karate seems really competent. I believe it focuses on brutal fight ending counter attacks, often combining through and joint locks with strikes. I believe that there is also the high use of knee and elbow strikes, which I greatly approve of. Giryu looked like he was using a form of Okinawan karate(though stopping short of countering like on normally would). The other guy almost looked like he was using shotokan.

@johnlloyddy7016
@johnlloyddy7016 5 лет назад
It's a social caste thing. You must view this scene in it's social context. During this period, the social mentality was different. The captain was a Samurai, long considered an upper caste in Japanese society during this time. While the Karateka were peasants. He considers them as inferior beings by birth, so to him, killing them for defying him was considered normal in his world, while their defiance and resistance to his authority followed by their savage beating of the soldiers was an abomination to the long accepted rules of their society. Think of it this way, if the movie setting was in the old American west and a former black slave who won his freedom and became a homeowner decided to react the same way to a Southern gentleman officer seizing his property in the name of the newly formed government, the society then would call the black homeowner a murderer too. But if the officer killed him, it would have been considered well deserved.

I remember how Bruce Lee said once that against a man truly trained with and mastered a sword, he would have little to no chance of winning that fight (I believe footage of this interview was in a documentary with Dan Inosanto from like 2011). Here are a group of soldiers with katanas and none of them could even scratch the karatékas. I’m going to say the Japanese army provided swords more for tradition than functionality it seems. Great scene though showing the two different following of the master’s orders. No striking and the first guy straight up kicked and killed one and Giriyu used evasion and blocks to neutralize the other. Interesting

In true karate philosophy , defence should take precedence over attack. Observe any karate Kata , the first move is always a block.

I love Okinawa. It always felt like home to me. I wished people understood, though, that Okinawa isn’t Japan, and Japan isn’t Okinawa.

I love this movie, watch it from time to time, one of the many I have. However, personally, I wouldn't just "block" those attacks. Someone attacks me they need to expect equal and opposite force back, at least. I'm with the first guy, attack me and regret it for the rest of your life, all few moments of it. In a real life, life and death, fight forget all that honor and rules bs. the one that was lives wins and I don't plan on being the loser. There is no such thing as Right or Wrong only Live or Die, in this situation.

There comes a point when a defensive block is applied with greater than the necessary force, then it becomes offense, meaning it is a strike. Timing of it also determines if it is offensive. What's to differentiate between "blocking" his incoming face with the knuckle part of my fist, with an upper forearm block? It's two surfaces coming into contact, the only difference is that one instigating, one reacting.

one of the best and favorite karate movie. Why don't they make more of this type of movie? Hopefully with real move and not the made up ones for movies or sports.

So...Taikan by going against his sensei's wishes actually saved the honor of the soldier by killing him, whereas Giryu who defeated his enemy by only blocking put the officer to such a shame that he had to kill himself. Ah the mysteries of Budo!
