Kurzweil PC4 VS Roland Fantom comparison 

Both sound really great, but the PC4's got some kind of magic that is unique to the Kurzweils.

The Roland sounds a bit like a "processed" piano sound, whereas the Kurzweil has a very natural sound waiting to be processed as needed.

Both sound nice. I will take either or, thank you.

Both has their own strength. Kurzweill sounds nice in accoustic area. Roland has Sonic sound in synth area because I own the Fantom G8. He only show the Piano and Electric Piano sound only, so that's my opinion.

Kurzweil gives the real hardware feeling. it's Like digital plugin vs hardware plugin.

The comparison was satisfactory. They both sound like very capable boards. I think he could have spent a little more time with electric pianos and added some synthesizer sounds, ensemble sounds and chromatic percussion for a more incisive comparison.

I'm amazed that most people are saying the Kurzweil sounds better. I actually ended up choosing the Kurzweil myself but I'll be damned if I'm ever caught saying that the Kurzweil sounded better than its competition in this particular video. But I guess it depends on what kind of piano sound suits your fancy. I mainly chose the Kurzweil for it's portability, price and the amount of sounds and stage customisability you get with it, with a nice interface. Plus it looks very sexy. Big fan of blue.

Comparing V-Piano engine and static PCM is clear & simple to make a decision.

Hello. I am Marco Oros from Slovakia. I am blind. I have carefully compares both sounds, kurzweil and roland and kurzweil sounds great for me. Roland's piano is good, but I think, that Kurzweil's spectrum of sound is more realistic, tham Roland sounds.

They both sound so alike, I guess it boils down to the keyboard action and the user interface (and price).

The way he play, both sound good. Not to mention the Roland cost about $1500 more.

Kuzweil much fuller sound always known for its thick sounds ; I'd even say heavy to describe it..

I think so the kurzweill have a natural piano most swetty, the sound in my perception is betther. The new Fanton have a sound a little bit shriek. Sound by sound the kurzweill win. Functions i need most informations. On e more Nice vídeo. The phrases are amazing. Great keyboarder 👏👏👏👏

No Rhodes achei o Kurzweil um pouco melhor, o som parece ter mais ambiência, mas nos pianos acústicos me parece uma questão de gosto. Os pianos da Kurzweil são um pouco fechados diante das outras marcas, mas, particularmente, eu gosto.

wanna see that comparision between Nord Stage 3 and New Fantom, specially Pianos (Grand Lady D, Royal Grand 3D, Amber Upright...) ;-)

What do you think off the piano action of the PC4? How does it feel? Cheep plastic? Or good?

I feel Rolland piano sound has more pleasant sound

One thing people should bear in mind when comparing the sound of the two is that the Fantom 7 is semi weighted, while the PC4 is hammer action, albeit apparently still a bit on the light side. Naturally the Fantom 7 is going to sound brighter and have more sustain with a lighter touch, while with the PC4 you need to put a bit more weight into it to get that same level of brightness and sustain. A comparison between the PC4 and the Fantom 8, which is hammer action, might give a clearer picture.

The Kurzweil acoustic piano sounds like it's it's darker and has more body. The Roland sounds a bit tinny. Sounds like two different piano's with different mic positions and one has the lid open and the other is closed. At the end of the day it's subjective to whatever you like. As far as having the more robust full body sound. I'd say the Kurzweil takes the cake here.

I would much rather hear this Fantom up against the Kronos and montage.... PLEASE! Lol but the kurzweil actually stacks up well!

Eu gosto ambas as marcas, porem o Kurzweil achei mais orgânico e equilibrado.

I don’t know on this one because some synthesizers have a fixed velocity pitch. I have a kurzwell PC2X and the piano sounds amazing. I also can adjust the velocity pitch to make it soft or hard. In this video the Roland sounds a little hard then the Kurzweil PC4. I also have a Yamaha MOXF6 and the piano sounds awesome but I have different velocity pitch settings like soft, hard, wide , adjustable and fixed.I like both of the synthesizers but I think the Roland Velocity pitch can be adjusted.

I have been researching about what music synth workstation to get next, As my old one was not only from 2001, it was not very good for then, and is now very broken. I found the Kurzweil PC4 on the top of a large list of good workstations, and have been doing research about it since. I have found that the Kurzweil out qualifies most workstations I have come across, (In my opinion.) not just because of sound quality, but because of what you can do to the sounds with what tools it gives you. (and the fact that I have been trying to find a good piano for recording and overlapping sounds, and tracks.) I find that the Kurzweil has been sounding and performing better than the others when compared side to side with them. The Roland is nice ........ but the Kurzweil is better. :D

I come a bit late to this video. I own a Forte and despite of being older than PC4 is more convinient for this test. First of all because the Forte Piano has much more definition and much more heavy samples than PC4. I know that Forte may look like old to some. Like Kronos could also. But it is recently upgraded to V4 (Nov 2019) and kept in the market at the more or less same price than new Roland Fantom. With similar keyboard action and similar weight. Taking into account that Forte has been upgraded to Workstation during the numerous free updates faithfully provided by Kurzweil to its customers; since its first appearance in 2014. Besides, VAST Synthesis is so much powerful now than ever. Indeed, Kurzweil has been faithful to his customers providing an evolution on the same synthesis rather than a new one after another. Keeping compatibility to a certain (and BTW big) extend. On the Forte you will miss the touch screen and some more polyphony since it is still 128 except for the B3 that is polyphony free. Fantom is a winner there. PC4 offers 256 voices. Polyphony and Processing Power evolve almost along side and 7 years are many years on technology. However, the possibilities of the Forte board are endless. With a much more quality piano than the PC4, Forte is still the top of Kurzweil (flagship) and it is not loger just a Stage Piano only, but also a Virtual VA1 Analog Modelling Synth, A FM Synth able to load DX7 syx files, a B3 polyphony free modelled organ, a Digital Sampler Based Synth with full VAST edition capabilities on board, with 4GB user loadable sampler data, a full Workstation and that providing: very powerful effect units, Arpeggiators, Riffs, Sequencer and CC Sequencer. That at a similar price tag than Roland Fantom. So a video comparing the new Roland Fantom with a Kurzweil Forte is much more appealing and needed in order to take a good decision. For some people a keyboard over the $3K will be prohibited. So the PC4 has a big market at that point. But if a working musician has a good budget that permits him to invest on a workstation $3 to $4K, I do not think he will look at the Kurzweil PC4 on the contrary. Being logic If he is attracted by Kurzweil VAST he will rather go for a Forte. I know that Kurzweil VAST is not friendly, but once you get into it, there is not current competitor to its flexibility and sonic capabilities. Most of the things you do with a Roland Fantom on its magnificent touch screen and friendly UI at the edition level are also available in Forte though no on such a nice display. However if you plan to keep your board laying at the studio (as both are super heavy and big), who does care of the screen size? In every studio there is one or more PC, isn't there? One can grab the PC and Mac editor (new version being released soon for V4), iPad editor and Plugging for Forte and you will not miss the super Roland display anymore. I know that you have the Forte on your shop. Could you make a video comparing both, Roland Fantom and Kurzweil Forte Pianos, Electric Pianos and B3 organs? Why no some synths sounds too? In piano aspect, they both sound fine and decent, like being recorded from different angle. But the PC4 wins for the final electric piano comparison, it sounds absolutely much sweeter and vibra, like the real Rhodes.

PC4 sounds warmer, has more dynamics too.. However, it might not work nicely with other instruments added (real ones e.g.), to cut through the mix so to speak.

You should've showcased different piano sounds.

Instead of just comparing the piano sounds acoustic and electric. I wanted to hear more about the features like midi zone capabilities, how much does these keyboards cost and weigh. Depending on your preference and use honestly keyboard players are using plug ins. I am not saying these keyboards don’t have great sounds but it really depends what are you looking for and how you want to use it for live performance as well as recording. I have a Kurzweil PC4 I love the midi zone functions and I really like that it has 9 midi zones allowing me to layer and combine external and internal sounds. Also the keyboard weighs 27 pounds coming from the days of moving the Fender Rhodes or a Hammond B3 that was moving heavy equipment. What sold the Yamaha DX7 was the simulated Rhodes sound and also that keyboard was portable and very light. Today the sounds are much better and the feel is very close to playing a real piano. Please present a video talking more about the features thank you.

I am Roland fan. The first piano sound of Roland is usually not great but there are lot of piano sounds. I am a fan of a 76 Roland keyboards because I can fit it in my boot and can play as a one man band in my church and my gigs. On this video I liked Roland. Kurzweil I prefer it when practicing classical piano.

Os pianos da Kurzweil PC4 são naturalmente mais fechados, mais abafados, já os do Roland Fantom são mais brilhantes, mais agudos. Aí é uma questão de gosto. Particularmente gosto mais do som abafado. Mas, claro que todos são editáveis. A opção de recursos do Roland Fantom é bem maior, fato, mas muitos não considerarão isso fator decisivo, porque nem tudo é "usável" no dia a dia de músico. Acho que entre esses dois o que vai pesar na decisão é o preço e o design (também questão de gosto). O PC4 é mais barato, mas o Fantom (pra mim) é mais bonito. Enfim, duas máquinas top de linha.

If you're a gigging keyboard player, to me it's a no brainer. Go with the Kurzweil for it's lightness as well as having nice keyboard action.

Ac Piano in the Roland is a lot better, richier high end sound. But PC4 Rhodes is soooo good.

Kurzweil sounds more round, full body. More pleasant sound. Roland is a bit too thin.

They sound like 2 completely different grand pianos.

perhaps one thing that people should note is that Roland’s Piano is generated by V-Piano Engine, a physical modeling engine, not samples involved, so you can make more modifications. While Kurzweil’s piano is sample based. Sounds like Roland’s piano is more close-mic’ed, you can probably adjust it somewhere, and Kurzweil’s is more to the side of the piano.

Pc4 e fantom são super máquinas e difícil escolher?

One piano patch vs. another one probably won't tell the full story. As far as I know both boards have a wide range of different piano sounds - which isn't the rule because usually different piano patches just mean same samples, different processing.

O Roland não deixa barato em relação a outras marca. Sem contar que a marca concorrente é forte

Pianos, shmanos...experience V.A.S.T. programming and you’ll get the point. The Roland is phenomenal as a synth but the Kurzweil blows it out of the water if you actually are into sound design flexibility

The Fantom 8 costs double the price of the Kurzweil PC 4. Although Fantom 8 has some advantages, this can make people think about cost x benefit ratio.

Fantom V-PIANO is more artificial. PC4 Grand is rather natural. But I bought FANTOM8, because I previously had RD-2000(V-PIANO section is identical), and the KURZWEIL product is very rare in Japan.
