And the Broncos are now on Channel 4 (NFL returned to CBS in 1998 as they got the AFC package from NBC).

You can still see the Broncos on occasion on KUSA when the team plays on Sunday Night Football.

The last NFL game on NBC (until Sunday Night Football moved from ESPN) was Super Bowl 32, the first Broncos Championship.

I think 1995 was the biggest year for local news stations, all across the countries, to switch major local channels. It was real confusing to viewers.

Darren Rosario Then there were the buyouts of ABC and CBS to Disney and Westinghouse respectively (GE still owned NBC at the time).

When WRAL TV became CBS for the first time Adele Arakawa was there as well in 1985 one year before I was born. There's also a RU-vid video showing that as well. Now that WRAL is an NBC station and has been since February 29, 2016 I can say that WRAL has had all three network affiliations even before I was born.
@EricEbac22
@EricEbac22 8 лет назад
WRAL was an NBC affiliate from its initial sign-on in 1956 until 1962, when it became an ABC affiliate. It remained an ABC station until 1985, when WRAL took on the CBS affiliation as a result of WTVD being swallowed up by Capital Cities Communications (which also purchased ABC around this time), effectively making it (WTVD) an ABC owned and operated station, which it remains to this day. WRAL would remain a CBS affiliate until March 1, when it returned to its original affiliation with NBC.

+EricEbac22 indeed. Adele Arakawa however covered both WRAL and KUSA affiliation switches at different times. Both of those times however Dan Rather now with AXS was the anchor for CBS Evening News.

Kevin Piland Interesting; I had no idea that Adele was with WRAL at any point. As I mentioned in another comment, the only other station (aside from KUSA) that I knew she worked with at any point was WBBM (CBS' Chicago base).

I wasn't aware that Fox had sold KDVR; I was aware that McGraw-Hill sold its properties to Scripps, but still it was McGraw-Hill that switched KMGH and KERO Bakersfield, CA from CBS to ABC (KGTV San Diego and WRTV Indianapolis have been with ABC since the '70s).

9NEWS was already number one in news, along with front man Ed Sardella. Back in late-1995, the number one status is in sync with NBC's status. Right after 9NEWS at 10, viewers stayed up to watch the #1 Jay Leno. Sandwiched between the 5 and 6 newscasts was the #1 Tom Brokaw report. Between the 6 and 10 news was the network's lineup, including Seinfeld and ER. Number One together - NBC and KUSA
@johnnyballenatl
@johnnyballenatl 4 года назад
Scoop Nemeth That was the same case with KSL in Salt Lake City; they were Utah's #1 station about to be with America's #1 network after many decades with CBS.

KUSA became an NBC affiliate by default. KCNC (Channel 4) went from NBC to CBS as part of a deal in which CBS bought it and KUTV Salt Lake City (which it has since sold) as part of giving up WCAU Philadelphia when Westinghouse bought CBS and KYW became the CBS station in Philly. Then McGraw-Hill decided to affiliate all of its stations with ABC, meaning KMGH (Channel 7) went from CBS to ABC. So it was either NBC or Fox, and--football considerations aside--Gannett (now Tegna Media) has a close relationship with NBC and is Channel 9's owner. Channel 4 is still a CBS o&o, and I think KDVR is a Fox o&o.
@EricEbac22
@EricEbac22 8 лет назад
As of December 31, 2007, KDVR is no longer a Fox O&O; Fox sold KDVR and eight of its other network owned and operated stations. KMGH is no longer owned and operated by McGraw-Hill, as the company divested all of its stations to Scripps-Howard Broadcasting at the end of 2012. Also, you are correct about KCNC still being a CBS O&O.

Fox sold KDVR to Tribune a few years ago, making them sister station to KWGN.
@EricEbac22
@EricEbac22 8 лет назад
+Jonathan Allen I knew KDVR was a sister station for KWGN, I just don't remember what year Tribune took over as KDVR's owner. I also know that KWGN is a Tribune O&O and has been since 1966.
@johnnyballenatl
@johnnyballenatl 8 лет назад
+EricEbac22 I think it was in the late 2000's, when Fox decided to sell off some of their underperforming O&Os in Cleveland (WJW), Milwaukee (WITI), Greensboro (WGHP), Missouri (St. Louis (KTVI) and Kansas City (WDAF)), and Denver all to Tribune. WBRC in Birmingham was sold to Raycom (now absorbed into Gray Media Group), and the Boston and Memphis affiliates (WFXT and WHBQ) were sold to Cox so that Fox would get KTVU in San Francisco.

KDVR is currently owned by Tribune but that company is in the process of being sold to NextStar. It and KWGN will become a sister stations to KXRM in Colorado Springs, and KREX in Grand Junction.

they did it ALL for ratings! not uncommon when a network on top looks for stronger stations in markets they want to dominate them, etc.
@johnnyballenatl
@johnnyballenatl 8 лет назад
KUSA has been the #1 station in Colorado for years, and they had no other choice but to hook up with the #1 network at the time; besides, their sister stations in Atlanta (WXIA), Phoenix (KPNX), Buffalo (WGRZ), Minneapolis-St. Paul (KARE), and now Seattle (KING), Portland (KGW), St. Louis (KSDK), and Boise (KTVB; the latter four formerly Belo) are already affiliated with NBC. And yes, Adele Arakawa witnessed WRAL's switch from ABC to CBS, which was the top network in 1985 (NBC, on WPTF 28 (now WRDC) in Raleigh-Durham at the time, would overtake them the following year) while WTVD became an ABC O&O.
@OTownNews
@OTownNews 8 месяцев назад
To echo, they didn’t need to switch networks for ratings, they were already #1. Also, NBC was all too happy to keep KCNC, but CBS had them in a vice, and indirectly so did KMGH’s parent company.

It happened in Green Bay as well, since we are home to the Packers. WGBA-TV FOX 26 swapped affiliations with WLUK-TV 11 (NBC), resulting WGBA-TV getting the NBC affiliation and establishing its own newscast, and WLUK-TV getting the FOX affiliate, as well as the top rated newscast in Green Bay.

@@DisneyStudioNetwork Green Bay's WLUK-TV 11 switched from NBC to FOX, whereas WGBA-TV 26 switched from FOX to NBC. It wasn't the first time a big switch affected Green Bay television, since WBAY-TV 2 switched from CBS to ABC in 1992 when WFRV-TV 5 switched from ABC to become a CBS O&O.

On September 10, 1988, exactly seven years before the Denver stations made The Big Switch to different networks, WBIR Channel 10 went from being the CBS affiliate in Knoxville, TN to becoming the NBC affiliate! Conversely enough, NBC affiliate WTVK Channel 26 became CBS affiliate WKXT Channel 8! It is now WVLT on Channel 8!
