Well, I never thought I'd end up with content THIS old until now. Yes, believe it or not, after a trip to the thrift store, I am a holder of 80s content. Imagine that.
What's even more bizarre though is this. So, most of you are young and probably don't know what this is. Well, you probably know what the first thing is -- just a quick news update, which I thought I'd include for historical reasons. The thing after, however, is a station sign-off. For those who don't know, TV stations didn't always broadcast during all hours of the day. Instead, they would go off the air after midnight or so (possibly later), and come back on air at 6 or 7AM-ish. And as it just so happens, this guy managed to record a station sign-off! I have no idea what use he had for it, but I'm not complaining, it was super cool to see. Traditionally, an American TV sign-off typically consisted of the Air Force flying while the poem "High Flight" was read, and a performing of the American national anthem, as both were seen here. They were quite patriotic, if you couldn't tell.
This is of the central Texas CBS station, KWTX. Interestingly, in the closing they mention the Brazos Valley CBS station KBTX, which indeed is owned by the same people (the Brazos Valley and Central Texas TV channels are very intertwined, and in fact they're even considered the same market by FCC rules even though they can more or less be seen as two mini-markets).
I apologize about the really irritating buzzing. I think it's an issue with power interference, but I don't totally know yet. I tried noise removal in Audacity but it did more harm than good so I just left it as it was. If I can find a way to capture without that grating noise on linear audio, I will probably re-upload this.

KWTX News 10 does not sign-off the air, as it did back then in the '70s '80s '90s and early to mid 2000s, when the TV station transitioned to a 24-7 broadcast schedule, as it is still affiliated with the CBS Television Network to this day.

SSB by the First Cavalry Division at Fort Hood was also used by KNCT, then the PBS station but now CW, bought by KWTX after Central Texas College couldn't afford to repack. I might have seen this on KCEN as well.

I have a few 80's recordings and most of them does have a buzzing sound in the background, I've always thought it was either the VCR it was recorded on or the recording speed. I've seen some videos where the buzzing sound is louder than the actual audio. (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CB-rZ7-2cGk.html)

This is definitely the VCR, though. I think there's an interference on my end in my apartment complex, it does this via linear audio on every single tape (hi-fi audio is fine though). That includes all commercial releases from the 90s.

How did you upscale this to HD? The sound is a bit out of sync, but it's at the right frame rate which I wish I could do on the stuff I've uploaded. Please let me know!

The sound being out of sync is my capture card's fault, I think. It usually doesn't do that but this time it did. No clue why, but that's not important. As for 60fps, I'll go ahead and copy/paste another comment I made since you aren't the first to ask: Good question! So, most capture cards that take from composite video (or S-video too, though S-VHS VCRs are pretty rare) will capture in 480i30. As in, although the video is technically only 30 frames a second, every frame is actually TWO molded into one -- the first frame is the odd horizontal lines, and the second is the even horizontal lines (or it can be the other way too). Most video editors, sadly, will only deinterlace this up to 480p30 using a field blending method. So, what I do -- first, stick the video into VirtualDub. Then add a deinterlace filter, and use the default yadif algorithm, then select "Double frame rate, top field first". Then save it as an AVI (preferably uncompressed, you want as little quality loss on this as you can; the file will be gigantic, but I assume you'll delete it later), and stick it into a video editor; I use Vegas Movie Studio myself. Upscale the video to 960 x 720 (do NOT do 1280 x 720; that's a widescreen resolution and we want 4:3 if it's most VHS stuff!), as RU-vid only allows 60FPS at 720p or higher. You should then have a fully 60 frames per second video that RU-vid will correctly parse. Now, if all you're doing is watching the video on a computer, this won't be necessary. Grab VLC Media Player, and turn on deinterlacing if the file is an interlaced video, and set the method to "Yadif (2x)". This should do the job just fine without the need to re-render the video. Thanks- I'll look into those programs. Frame rate has been my biggest complaint about RU-vid, it'd be SO much better if all the old video material was at the right frame rate!

VLC and VirtualDub are both free, Vegas is not; but there should be at least some free video editors to take a look at. Yeah, something that has bothered me a ton about RU-vid is that it popularized 30FPS as the de-facto standard for streaming video. If you think I'm exaggerating, believe me, I was in the video streaming world before RU-vid was standardized. Google Video supported 60fps, Speed Demos Archive always had it on their embedded flash player, the Internet Archive supported it...but RU-vid became the platform of choice, which happened to have a 30 limit, and because of that, everyone else has cheaped out for years and only supported 30. I get that 30 is easier to deal with, but come on, if we had 60fps support in 2006, why the heck is it not more widespread now? A lot of people think it's "good enough" but you can't say that when it effectively loses half the video information on a 60 source. So yeah, you aren't the only one who has aimed to get things as close to the source material as possible. That was probably more of a nerdy rant than anything but I've always noticed it, even when I was young. It amazes me how few people can tell the difference.

William Conrad is on this one (and no credit given to the author). I do not know who is on the original version. Not every station uses High Flight.

This is a slightly modified version of this variant of High Flight, as a Sacramento, Ca sign off that has this High Flight variant has the full version giving credit to William Conrad at the beginning, along with the author.

Unfortunately that's not likely to happen, they actually weren't even supposed to be selling TV-recorded tapes (I assume one of the employees made a mistake), and they only let me buy them because I checked what was on them before I did. Also, that's a pretty ridiculously arbitrary thing to be looking for. Why are you so adamant about finding that bumper anyway? We don't even know for sure if it actually exists, and even if it does, it's just a variant of a bumper that already exists all over the place elsewhere.

I mean, the other problem here is that PBS stuff taped off TV is surprisingly rare. Finding any kind of kid content is hard enough (people record the most boring stuff). Finding content on a channel that's more or less associated with really young kids is close to impossible. I'm sure I can find it if I keep looking, but still, I wouldn't get your hopes up. And I understand it's lost, but so are a bunch of other things. Entire episodes of TV shows are sometimes nowhere to be found, neither on official releases or across the Internet.

KWTX No longer signs off because of 24-7 broadcasting they did not sign off in years

No major station has signed off in the last 20 years. In fact, as far as I'm aware, no station signs off anymore, period. Nowadays it's more financially viable to just run paid programming during the after hours.

@@vaulths8992 I name one exception, KEYC-TV in Mankato, Minnesota. The sign-off is exactly why that station has yet to clear any overnight news program that comes from affiliate CBS.

My NBC affiliate still technically signs off every night. They show their weather radar instead of a test pattern, though.
