Justin Townes Earle has lived more lives in his one than most of us will ever see. From substance abuse to his storied parental problems, it's all been well documented in his songs. After grabbing critical acclaim on 2010's Harlem River Blues, Earle is back with Nothing's Gonna Change The Way You Feel About Me Now, a musical sendoff to that old Stax and Memphis sound with lyrics heartfelt and tattooed deep beyond his sleeves. We talk age, parenting, roots, and much much more backstage at Forecastle 2012.

I was at a thrift store and had no idea who he was when I came across his CD, Harlem River blues. I absolutely loved it!! He was such a great writer and performer. I didn't put together who his dad was until recently. I used to love to listen to his dad too. Unfortunately his demons got to him in the end. God bless his soul and God bless his family.

The 1st time I heard of Justin, was seeing him open for Social Distortion in 2018...immediately went home and watched everything I could find from him on RU-vid. Love his music, but the man had a tortured soul, and it came through in his music.

American music is so vast and he certainly understood the enormity of the scope and breadth of the riches. How do you face all that wealth? We simply have to see what pain is behind and below it all. The pain of everyday life is never easy, but music is the great healer. More than any substance, it will get us through if we allow it.

Beautiful interview, the sound of the rain and all. But sad... The interviewer obviously really knows his music. That must have been a really good period for JTE.

His "wasted youth" is all he knows because that was his life growing up. It helped shape him into the person and artist he is today... much like the mistakes you made when you were young made you who you are, right? He is talking about what he lived through and experienced, not because he is proud, but because it is his truth. Also, has that "image" EVER really helped him sell records? I don't believe so. The music speaks for itself.

'Who am I to say, maybe you had good intentions at heart..maybe you had truer aim and it was me who missed my mark' - Beautiful song young superhero. I also keep thinking of Harlem river blues 'troubled days are behind me now and i know they're gonna let me in'. RIP JTE.

@@smwrbd You probably haven't hit the age yet man..(if you're referring to yourself) but a lot of that 'it comes with age' is a bit of an 'out' imo. It also in my experience comes with some perspective the way you look at how you are and what you'd like to be. And NEVER care about others perspectives about you, that's futile af. Hope all is good brotha. R.I.P JTE.

He sings about what he knows, what he's been through...why is that so bad? I don't think he does that to sell records, he talks/sings about his life because that's what he knows most, that's what shaped him. Would you rather him singing about how his tractor is sexy or how his baby's got her bluejeans on? lol, this is real shit, not what they tell you to listen to on the radio

It was cool to see that and be able to see into the future and know that the record he was just starting to write was probably the Single Monsters / Absent Fathers stuff. To know that he did have a kid later, and to think of all the great records he did. What wasn't so fun to think about was that death did finally catch up to him when he was 38. Who knows what would've happened, but I have a feeling if the world didn't stop and he wasn't stuck in one place, unable to live the life on the road he'd known most of his life, he might've stayed moving long enough not to drown. I didn't know him, though. The same thing could've also happened on the road, obviously, but maybe the business of it and having to keep a schedule was JUST enough structure to be good for him. He was always kind of playing Russian Roulette in a sense, I guess. Sad to see him go, but I'm glad he was around long enough to imprint his tortured soul into many wonderful songs that will last forever.

He's not proud of it. I'm sure I sound callous when I talk about my depression as a teenager, but that's because I talk of it so often and I talk of it so often so that I don't back pedal. JTE is talking about it often and this way because he's trying not to back pedal. Also, it probably helps others struggling with the same thing.

He doesn't go easy on Steve. I don't blame him. I love both of their music but i'm guessing Townes is the better man.

Listen to Townes's son JT in the documentary "Be Here to Love Me" and it may change your mind. Townes was a self-absorbed alcoholic - a genius, yes, but not good to his family and he never got sober. I expect Steve and Justin pretty alike, which is why they butt heads. Not better men than Townes, but not worse. (I have followed JTE's twitter for a couple years, and at times he can be pretty childish and angry.)
