You're in Kyoto and you want to eat traditional and very cheap local food? NISHIKI MARKET is the place to be! It's called “Kyoto's Kitchen” for a reason - if it's famous and eaten in Kyoto, it's here.
Nearly every shop selling food has either free samples or a stand where you can buy food on a stick! Street food here ranges in cost from 170 yen to 500 yen.
In the episode, John Daub and Kevin Riley go on an eating rampage though Kyoto's Nishiki Ichiba Market near Gion. The market dates back to the year 1310 and is steeped in history and Japanese delicacies. Join us on our food tour through Japan's cultural center.
Not far from Nishiki Market is Higashiyama Kiyomizu 3-chome where you can also find a lot of traditional street food such as fresh off the grill senbei (rice crackers) and green tea ice cream!
Things Eaten in this episode:
★ Eel Liver (Unagi no Kimo)
★ Tofu Donuts (Brown Sugar and Soy Bean Powder / Kinako)
★ Green Tea Warabi Mochi
★ Boiled Japanese Pike Conger Eel (Hamo)
★ Baby Octopus Egg Heads on a Stick
★ Green Tea / Uji Matcha Ice Cream

Let's see: Eel liver=$3.73 , the donuts, $2.44, Macha Mochi=$4.38, conger eel=$3.25, baby octipi=$2.03, macha ice cream=$3.25 Total"$19.08. Each item seemed kind of expensive (Probably not in Japan) but together, it's quite an inexpensive way to try lots of things. Seems totally worth it to learn more about food. Please do more videos. Really enjoyed seeing this one. Thanks.

Your money sense is normal. Even as for the money sense of us Japanese, those are expensive (though the prices of Kyoto are high). Especially that small amount of Uji-maccha warabi-mochi is 540 yen = $5. tooooooooooo expensive. I can't believe it. That's nothing but a rip-off. In Japanese, it is said bottakuri "ぼったくり" If you are going to travel in Japan, be careful of ぼったくり shops.

The donuts, octopus, and icecream seem about right to me, honestly. The rest I have no idea >.< Mochi seemed expensive though

I went to Kyoto back in October so I could go to this Market and try all this food. When I found the tamago octopus another tourist came up behind me, and said he would give me 500 yen if I ate one. I ordered 2, and I looked him directly in the eyes as I ate the first one whole. I told him i came here specifically for these. They were delicious, and his face and the 500 yen only made it taste better LOL.
