They say that food is the best way of connecting with a culture - we couldn’t agree more - but then any excuse for an EPIC meal!
In Karakol Kyrgyzstan you can arrange to have the most amazing meal with a local family in the Dungan village. They serve 12 dishes or incredible food and teach you all about the culture. They even let you get involved with the cooking too! Thankfully though, they do do most of it, which is why it's amazing! This is genuinely one of our favourite things to do in Karakol.
This is a great way to support locals in Kyrgystan and get a first hand experience of the nomadic Kyrgyz culture and daily life. You also get to help make and try a noodle dish called Ashlan Fu. Karakol is famous for its signature Ashlan Fu and the Dungan people certainly know how to make a good one! The experience culminates in an incredible meal where the Dungan food just keeps coming! Local breads, fresh fruit and vegetables, noodle dishes, delicious meat dishes and local tea.
So who are the Dungan people? The Dungan people are an ethnic group of Han Chinese muslims who emigrated to central asia and the silk road over 140 years ago. Members of this ethnic group call themselves “Hui people” because they are descendants of Hui who came to Central Asia.

If you want to learn all about Dungan cuisine and join them for a feast Destination Karakol can hook you up with a food tour:

The tour costs 1,400KGS (around £15) and takes around 3 hours. Tours run most evenings - but it is definitely worth contacting them a day or two in advance to book.
Highlights of the food tour:
Make your own ashlan-fu, the most famous (and delicious!) Dungan dish. Deepen your understanding of Dungan culture and history on a 30-minute village walking tour. Take in local stories and legends on a visit to the museum and mosque. Learn the fascinating story of why this Muslim Chinese group immigrated to the region 140 years ago, how they made the area their home, and how families today keep their traditional culture and cuisine alive. AND of course the EPIC MEAL!

Nice trip, just a bit of history) Marco Polo on his trip to Asia liked that meal you had there so much that he brought it to Roman Empire, now we know that meal as Italian spaghetti 🍝
