This was the version I heard when I was in Vietnam on the radio. Probably because Vietnam was once a French colony. I was totally unaware of the instrumental version until I got back in December 1968. When they played all the hits of the year on New Year's Day, 1969.

No, no it was a terrible tragic accident. The gun was for protection for her and her three children. It was defective, faulty she did not know how to use it was having trouble with it She did not know it was loaded and was bringing it to him in bedroom when it went off . they had trespassers on the property, his aggressive fans and she was scared to be there with her three children alone with the fans getting onto the property and approaching the house demanding to see him.

I think the lyric is not ok, for example in the part "douce ma vie, ma vie dans tres bras" it have to be " douce ma vie, ma vie dans tes bras". Careful, because it could carry problems to beginners in French.
