I went on boat tour of the islands in 1972 and was amazed to see the Bolt castle. I took some pictures which I still have. I guess the castle is my most impressive thing, but Mr’s Bolt’s charitable donations as well as his son’s continued charity work was also very impressive and commendable! 👏🏻🧑🏻‍🦰🇨🇦

I fell in love with Boldt Castle & its sad-but-romantic history the first time I visited it as a small child in the mid-1950s. I still recall spying a massive crystal chandelier in its partially opened crate, with workers' tools strewn on the floor. Workers were just uncrating the chandelier when Boldt told them to put down their tools & depart as his wife had just died, leaving behind this gift to his beloved wife. The Antique Boat Museum is in Clayton, NY, not Alexandria Bay. The Thousand Islands is a magical place and I will always love it, remembering fondly the best days of my childhood spent in a cottage on the St. Lawrence River in the 1000 Islands, and every summer's Uncle Sam's Boat Tour around the islands, stopping at Boldt Castle.

I have an idea. You need to put together in a searchable fashion on your website a list of home museums that can be searched by state. That way as we travel, we could possibly remember to go to some of these.

Wonderful review Ken. Thank you for including La Duchesse. So much effort has been put forth to preserve the castle, the yacht house and the house boat. A great visit for anyone right at the North end of Route 81 in NY State, in the beautiful 1000 Islands.

I used to live near Alex. Bay so I went there often from the 50s to recently. I can remember it being in poor shape and then craftsmen came in and redid the plaster work etc. It is really a beautiful area.

I have been to Boldt Castle in Alexandria Bay. It was gorgeous. At that time only the first floor had been restored. On the second and higher floors it was still only partially completed. There was graffiti on the ceiling of the tower from the 1920's.

The castle was magnificent. It just seems so waste for Boldt to not have finished it. After all, one man built the Taj Mahal for his favorite wife after she had died.
