This is the second episode of our new Labrador Retriever training series. Over the course of the next few months we will be covering a wide range of topics including dog training methodology, terminology, and best practices.
Our goal is to provide insight into various puppy training strategies and techniques, highlighting what we consider to be the most fun and efficacious approaches to reaching the short and long range goals of retriever trainers; whether training is taking place in the field or in the suburbs!
I hope you guys enjoy!

Are you a fan of my training style, but can’t travel to Kentucky to see me in person? No worries! I offer an awesome online dog training course, which includes access to an array of exclusive videos and content, personalized coaching, journaling, and in-depth mentoring and evaluation by yours truly! Just need some an advice or have a couple questions you need answered? I also offer professional consulting by the hour. Both of these great services can be found here: kentuckycanine.com/onlinecoaching. Thank you all for your remarkable support over the years! I cannot express enough how grateful I am for your appreciation and patronage of this channel, my training style, and my kennel. Always remember, it’s a great day for a puppy-sized adventure! ⁃Stonnie Dennis, Dog Trainer

Stonnie, one thing I've learned from you is to find creative ways to introduce lab pups to things. This is very interesting. It is a bit cold now in Idaho to expect pups to swim. But yesterday on an adventure, when they were drinking from a puddle I tossed a few kibbles into the puddle to see if they would go after them. Before they realized it they were wading around to get the treats floating on the water. That was enough for yesterday. I'm sure they will do it again tomorrow.

Love that you keep the little boo-boos of the sweet pups in the vid so that everyone sees how to address it in a positive and fun way!! *SHARED!!*

I'm getting a chocolate lab pup in a couple weeks, I've been binge watching training videos ( I've previously trained two dogs, but like to see how other people do things and what not) I must say, your videos and training methods are phenomenal. I love how simple, yet intuitive everything you do is. It seems like everything you do is working with the pups in such a natural and comfortable way that they cooperate and in the long run are more compliant and happier dogs, I can't get enough of your videos. Keep up the great work!

I like how you don’t overuse the food reward. Very important as is timing. Patience is key! Thanks Stonnie.

If you are planning on hunting then it is very useful to have a dog that can take casts to do blind retrieves. Force fetch is the foundation for the back command which eventually turns into collar force, force to pile, t-drill, swim-by, etc. Would love to see you cover more advanced retriever work in your videos Stonnie!
@StonnieDennis

That’s exactly what I am working on in this video, except with the inductive retrieve rather than the traditional force fetch.

0:17 man i wish i had your life. greetings from southern california. i miss america xD your videos have been helping me a lot with my 3 month lab, he is nothing like my old ridgeback who needed very little direction, clifford the big red lab is not so focused hahah fortunately my boy was born in a motorcycle garage so loud noises mean nothing to him :)

Hello, new to your channel, always been a super fan of force fetch, and it's always worked for me, however I'll be trying out your method with my next gun dog, your videos make sense,and are enjoyable to watch Thanks

The great thing about the inductive retrieve is that it provides a great foundation if you end up choosing the more traditional approach later on.

Love your videos Stonnie. I ultimately decided to force fetch my pup (currently in that process now) but have used many of your techniques for obedience and socialization. Glad to see someone showing that there is more than one way to get the job done. Thanks for all the great content!

Hey stonnie, just got an 8 week old lab puppy and he is a beauty and has such a lovely temperament ! However I live in the U.K. and we have recently gone on lockdown. He is doing so well with his base patterns and exercise as well as nailing his house training. My worry is the fact he won’t be able to socialise with other dogs whilst in isolation ourselves. How/will this effect his future behaviour? (I let him meet the family dog before we went into isolation) what can I do to help him to being well adjusted to other dogs in the future?
@shellymb

Would you start with a Dummy before transitioning to a dumbell? Starting to work my dog in formal obedience, and in this level we need a dumbbell retrieve, My dog is interested if I move the dumbell around but has grabbed at the dumbbell and bumped her teeth and is now not willing put mouth on dumbell. Just thinking to change the picture for her… ?

I really enjoy your videos, but Im past this level and would be very happy if you could make some more advanced stuff :)
@StonnieDennis
@StonnieDennis 4 года назад
Honestly, anything “advanced” is simply an extension of basic training. What do you mean by advanced? Does your dog do all of those things, reliably, off leash, in a high distraction environment? If so, then everything else is really just a matter of practice and repetition.
@robinolsen5171
@robinolsen5171 4 года назад
No, he is not reliable when there are female dogs around :( No matter how much I train, he is nutts around them. Other than that he is amazing. He is 2 years old now, and we have followed your guidance and filosophy all the way. I am very thankfull! I will as soon as the corona crisis is over try him as a competative gun dog, and allso give another go at competative obedience (distracted by a bitch and failed first try last year :) Wishlist on video: Step by step use of whistle commands, (stop, go righ/left, close proximity search, recall, command dog to go farther away etc) This have for me been very hard to figure out how to do.

good videos nice to watch ,Man I wanna get a dog, whatever you’re getting from RU-vid If anything you should be getting a raise ,I’m sure you know ,but I don’t understand why they ever advertise other dog trainers in commercial on your spotlight, kind of bothers me for some reason.
