@ the dad challenge podcast not trying to be mean but their daughter everliegh has been dancing since she was 2 years old and she almost 10 this year in December and they never get to see her because dance takes up a lot of time and just think about it this a example if you have a kid or know someone who kids in dance since he or her was 2 years old and you never get to see her or him until 8,9 or 10:00 pm and it’s after school activities and after school she goes straight to the dance class what would you do? Would you find a way to spend more time with her or him and still be able to go to thier dance competition. Like I said not trying to be mean but everliegh has been dancing since she was 2 years old and she absolutely loves it so much they thinking about homeschooling her so they can spend more time with her and still be able to go to dance class early and dance competitions and more family time together as a family. What would do? 1- keep him or her in public school and not able to go to do anything together as family or 2 - homeschooling her or him so you can spend more time with her or him as a family and do things together as a family?which one would you choose . I rather choose number 2 because homeschooling them would be easy because you can travel more often and get to spend more time with them .get to go somewhere early without have to check them out of school early and rush out the door to pick them up from school and head out for road trip or fly on airplane and miss the turn or miss the flight . By the way they are not hurting their kids they are trying to find a way to spend more time with their daughter everliegh because she has been dancing since she was 2 years old and dance usually takes up a lot of time. About Carl the dog something actually did happen to him.

80k teacher salary? That’s beautiful. In the US, teacher pay is straight crap. I actually had two janitors in my school making more than me. I had two degrees in education and my district was requiring me to get my masters degree and pay for it myself with the little pay they were giving me. There is an overwhelming problem in America where parents don’t hold their children accountable for their behavior. Teachers aren’t respected in the US. It’s horrible. I quit after six years. Yes I was shocked about the teachers wages in Canada or if it's specific to the province he lives in I'm not sure. I live in New York in America have several teachers in my family and even when they make 10 year they're still paid garbage and we always have to do every summer fundraising to make sure that there are enough disinfectant wipes, crayons, tissues binders, staplers and things for the schools because the teachers usually spend a good part of their budget buying their own supplies when they're already underpaid and Parents try to help out. Thank you for the years that you did teach and what you brought back totally understandable it was not a sustainable position to work.

@@Christlike1982 I was paid $35,000/year. One of my coworkers had his master's, was a coach, and he had been teaching for 20 years. He made roughly $50,000. This is North Carolina, USA. Teachers DO NOT get paid well. Rewatching the clip, I realized you're in Canada (i forgot..), but coming from the daughter of a US teacher, they are grossly underpaid. That's just the general truth of at least the US, teaching is one of the most underpaid professions, especially as the kids get younger. I do think College professors get paid extremely well, I'm mainly talking about elementary and mid school. I know high school pay isn't great, but it's not as gross as younger grades. Not only do plenty of teachers spend weeks cleaning up at the end of the school year, weeks setting up at the beginning of the school year, doing weeks of summer school, getting to school early and staying later, grading on the weekends, planning lesson plans and setting up slides, videos, forms, tests, outside of school, they're also the "bad guys" and have to deal with parents constantly yelling at them because their kid is a butt. Parents yelling at them because their child isn't doing their homework and is failing... Teachers have to put up so much shit (i rarely swear) and I truly don't believe their salary represents all they go through. I do agree, though, that kids need to go back to school and that was the important point you were making. edit: i do wanna add that my dad teaches because he loves it, he loves teaching and helping kids. he's even said that he'd do this job even if he didn't get paid. i think most teachers are similar, and that's just one more reason why they deserve more pay and more respect. i truly believe teachers are (generally.....we've all had that one or two bad apples) some of the most selfless and amazing people. I'm also extremely happy teachers are some of the first to get vaccinated. Because we need kids in school, and this is coming from an almost 18yo senior.

@@jennc1516 CPS gets paid about $40,000 USD as a starting salary. My mom taught in CPS for like 15 years. This doesn't even take into account that the schools in CPS are severely underfunded and teachers pay out of pocket for lots of their supplies. Their salary doesn't reflect abuse from parents, the hours of building lesson plans, hours of grading, of conferences with students. Obviously you're not a teacher and you don't know one. Theresa, I loved your comment. Especially the part about your dad, he sounds like an extraordinary human. Send him hugs from a momma who knows the value of a good teacher. A teacher who truly cares about their kids (not even their students, their kids is what I hear all the time from my 6 year old kiddos favorite ESL teacher ❤). He has ASD and SPD and this is the first year we've been blessed with teachers that I imagine your dad would be proud to teach with... they've made a WORLD of difference for my so so sweet little man who's had (still does but leaps and bounds better) serious serious fear and anxiety since preschool... preschool! Just 4 and was a wreck every day. Teachers seriously change lives. I'm watching it happen with my son. That's priceless... but here in the US it's more an insult than a salary. 🙄

I'm a teacher in Oklahoma. I hardly make any money and I do work my butt off. Not to mention we get treated poorly but deal with it anyway. I chose to become a teacher because I want to make a difference in childrens' lives. Anyways, I prefer to be in school because of the reasons you mentioned. It's so hard for the children and they don't learn anything at home. The thing with the United States is that they can provide safe measures, but they don't want to spend money on it. It's not very safe where I live to be in school, but we are currently in a hybrid schedule to learn. I think teachers collectively as a whole want what's best for the kids, but I can't speak for everyone. We need vaccines though and unfortunately they keep pushing back when we can get them. That school board you talked about is extreme with not going back even in 2022.

My mom was a teacher for years and got paid nothing, and had to pay out of her own pocket for the kids to have any "nice" things in her class, to boot. Teachers aren't playing victims for wanting to protect kids and themselves. We cannot just ignore a pandemic and let it get worse to go back to the status quo. Yeah, it sucks kid suicide rates and depression is rising. _Everyone's_ is. All we can do is try to help alleviate it without breaking quarantine. I think younger people are actually surviving a little better just because most have online lives.

I’m so proud of my son’s teachers. When the school year was getting ready to start they had a ton of board meetings and decided they were going to do online learning. My son had autism, he’s in a class that is other kids with autism, and most special needs kids cannot learn online, it became very clear during the months of quarantine that our special needs kids were falling behind not only with their academic progress, but having their schedules so messed up was causing more meltdowns and rough behaviors. The special needs teachers all got together and went to the school board and said they were going to teach. All the teachers, the paras, the speech pathologists, occupational therapists, etc all made the choice to teach. Because of these amazing people my son was able to go back to school in September and is still going five days a week. Those teachers that stood up for our kids deserve a huge thank you.

I only get paid for 9 months, but yes I have summers off etc. As a mental health professional in the school system, I agree that the kids are doing better in school. My thing was once everyone else in my area went back to work...it was also time for us to go back to work. We have had doctors and nurses putting their lives on the line for months and we don’t get to now stand up and talk about how dangerous it is. Our school did a fantastic job of keeping the at risk teachers out of the classrooms and safe, and keeping the teachers who were able to go back to work safe as well. We have been open since August with minimal people getting sick. And I know that’s not like that everywhere, but I am so happy that we have been able to make it work.

At my dad's school, there are teachers who won't come back even though they don't have underlying factors and so the school has to pay for a babysitter to watch the kids in person while the teacher teaches from home and at some point, the school won't be able to continue paying the teacher and babysitter and guess which one will go - the one who won't come in.

It’s not about children being less susceptible/more likely to beat it quickly. It’s about the people those possibly infected interact with. Child comes home from school and has a snack with this grandmother, who lives with them. It could get Grandma or Dad brings it to work. The virus then ripples out into the community. Keeping children out of school is an important part of stopping the spread. Just my opinion.

The science says that won't happen-- numerous studies showing kids don't transmit to adults, only adults to adults (even the WHO says so, and I think they're sketchy.) And if schools are locked down, the kids won't be able to see their own grandparents at all, even if that is a concern, which it isn't. Statistics are exploding how children are being neglected through the lockdown, the very population that isn't threatened by COVID, nor is a threat to others with COVID.

Yes as much as it breaks my heart to see my son bored and a bit more isolated than he usually would be it is for the safety of the community, Children especially have the ease of carrying flus and things home it's actually a joke around here once one kid in a classroom gets sick every one gets sick. All the parents get sick and teachers Etc. Until all vaccines have been distributed and it becomes much safer to be in crowded classrooms especially because here many families don't have access to the health care they need use enforcing social distancing and keeping kids at least socially distanced it is safe wave with are far apart enough needs to happen before they can just go back to school.. I completely understand that our children's mental welfare and well-being needs to be addressed and we absolutely need to be making sure that our kids are okay and coming up with the most creative ways we can to take care of them, but I know for at least where I live here in the states teachers are paid garbage are schools are underfunded and overcrowded ( like when swine flu was here emergency rooms were so crowded parents were standing out on sidewalks with their kids waiting just to get into the building). And in a household like mine were infection would be certain death because I'm already terminally ill and then I have my older parents who both are unwell it would just be a disaster. We have done a soft opening of kids going every other day and ever since there have been Rises & infection rates and deaths.

@@las5510 According to scientific research, studies, etc. conducted, children do NOT pass COVID to adults. Not only that, they are likely not even in contact with their grandparents, alleviating that concern. The teachers here are being performative, i.e. showing everything else they can do in the name of "safety": dancing in the snow while the quality of their students well being and education (their JOBS) suffer while they keep being paid.

Hard disagree about the teachers. Here in the US, they get paid very little and in many states are teaching both online AND in person. And how do you know that those teachers aren't high risk just by looking at them? Teachers didn't sign up to risk their health in a pandemic without protection.
@questionsfromthebeyond
@questionsfromthebeyond 3 года назад
Well, because they can stay online if they're at risk. Simple. BTW, 60 and older are the vulnerable population-- as stated by the science and not by either side of politics-- children don't transmit to adults (only adults to adults), and these teachers are healthy enough to be dancing in the freezing snow and with OTHER PEOPLE celebrating that they get to stay home and get a paycheck while the mental health and learning capability of their students plummet. Not only have teen suicides skyrocketed, so have kids UNDER 10. Disgusting what these "teachers" are celebrating.

My sister is a first year teacher (making less than $30k), and every single teacher in her school has already had covid, so they’ve basically all been taking turns spreading it to each other without knowing. It’s tricky because if they all stay they will all get sick, and some of them (like my sister) have to still help their grandparents through the pandemic. So I completely understand the desire for them to stay home but my sister gets sad every time she has to do online learning. For her, she loves her kids so much and knows they need the one-on-one connection. I see both sides, and it’s such a hard decision. I personally chose to homeschool my kids this year because e-learning was so hard on my daughter. You are right - it is hands on learning 100%. I teach my daughter everything and that’s a part of my day now which gives me way less time to make content or connect online with my viewers but she’s worth it, and I want to make sure she’s growing and learning. I think a lot of people think homeschooling is simple, but it’s not at all.

That video of the teachers is ridiculous and makes no sense, but as a teacher I get so incredibly sick of hearing that we “signed up for it”. No, we literally sign a contract that states the number of days and hours we are responsible for working. My work day is supposed to be 7.5 hours (9:15-4:45) with a duty free (student free) planning period of one hour. With various meetings, bus monitoring, and dealing with parents my actual workday is more like 8:15-6:00. Every day. I hadn’t had a student free planning period in the entire last year we worked due to short staffing. Because of this, I end up having to plan during my unpaid weekends and holidays. Let me ask you this, if a doctor was paid an hourly wage and was performing a surgery that ended up taking 4 hours longer than expected, would you argue with him getting paid overtime? Or would you say, he worked the extra hours so pay him for them. Our school ends at 4:30, because I work with preschool they require that certified teachers always be with students in the building. Our last bus leaves between 5:15-5:30. We are required to stay with those students but we are told we will only get paid an additional 10 minutes PER WEEK, if we complain they act like we’re ungrateful. It’s this kind of shady shit we didn’t sign up for. Edited to add - BUT I do my job because I love it. It’s sad that when teachers ask for better treatment we’re always told we can quit at any time. There is no respect for our profession, despite parents screaming about how important schools are. We’re not just teachers, we’re therapists, nurses, etc... too.

I am so glad to see teachers telling josh how it is. Yes. My mom has been a teacher her whole life, thru diff states. She now runs the problem at her university teaching college students to become teachers&credentialing them, setting them in student teaching positions, etc. Teachers and social workers make the least amount of money for the absolute hardest, most all consuming, unfair workload, and what she's seen is a LOT of people go back and forth. They are social workers, then they become teachers, or, they are teachers and become social workers. It takes a certain type, willing to take that much shit, for that little money, because they care. No one is in that career for the money, and it's bullshit to act like teachers are being selfish brats. Unbelievable.

Yes. That is great parenting. I don’t deny that schooling is important fir our kids, but I’m sorry. The government did a terrible job dealing with Covid-19 in the beginning. Yes it is struggle with kids and trying to help them not struggle( I should know I had a preschool aged one and and a baby). But again this is the situation we’re in and parents and family need to be held more accountable for “teaching” their kids, speaking with them, engaging in them, keeping them occupied. I’m a nurse and I’ve seen this virus affect tons of patients who are in their 30s and 40s. Several have died. And from speaking with nurses that I personally know(not media or tv nurses), Covid-19 has killed such random types of people and my 28 year old healthy coworker still has to wear her heart monitor from all of the cardiac and PE issues she had from a “mostly symptomless” COVID-19.

I also have to say I completely agree with you on the school situation. While I’m not a parent I am a nanny and have seen the affects this is all having and I knew from day one there is no way these kids will learn as well at home as they would at school unless they have parents who are putting in extra work. But most parents are now trying to juggle online school while working from home on top of it. A previous family I worked with who I keep in touch with told me that they just don’t have the time to spend on the school work because they are working themselves. And many have admitted their kids are getting way more screen time than they are comfortable with. I also worry about the young ones who are still learning to talk and can’t see people’s expressions or the formation of works with everyone wearing masks. A family I just started back with again, has a 5 month old and since he has been with just the parents all this time, I’m the first person to hold him other than them and he is not use to that and get very cranky after a while because he wants his parents. I also am very upset at the affect this is having seniors mental health and cognitive functions. We have seen a major decline in my grandma since covid. She is depressed. She is confused a lot and her memory has deteriorated. She is currently in the hospital due to her COPD causing pneumonia and we try to call her and half the time we don’t reach her because she doesn’t have TV or anything to keep her stimulated in her hospital room so she just sleeps all the time. And when we do eventually get her on the phone we barely have a conversation due to her memory and confusion. And of course we can’t visit her. My other grandma passed November due to depression from not being able to see family.
