**LABYRINTH** IS LOWKEY SCARY?? FIRST Time Watch 

BEFORE Y'ALL SAY ANYTHING!!! I sat down for like 20 minutes to think about that riddle with the doors that lead to certain death and the castle and how one of the two always lies, and it finally made sense to me!! It was totally worth the headache that it gave me 🥴

I know they wanted David Bowie to kiss Jennifer during the ball scene but David said he didn’t feel comfortable with it, so they scrapped the whole romance aspect of it!!

"I ask for so little. Just fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave. " WHERE DO I SIGN???? JARETH, WHERE DO I SIGN????!

"glitter and everything" I mean it's David Bowie, the special effects crew can only do so much to suppress his natural self.

The Goblin King takes babies because A.) That's what fey do, and B.) The baby only had 13 hours for Sarah to come and save him before he was turned into a goblin. That's how goblins reproduce, by turning human babies into more of them.

Fun fact: the owl at the beginning of Labyrinth is regarded as the first realistic cgi animal in a movie!!

The owl is Jareth. Maybe that's why they show it so much. He's basically been watching her this whole time

"David Bowie's Bulge" has its own Labyrinth movie fansites, JSYK.

I think the idea with Jareth is that he's playing a role, and he's stuck in it. It's never really stated whether the Labyrinth is one of those 'different for everyone who goes through it' sort of things or not, but clearly Jareth, at least, is playing out the role she placed him in at the beginning. She made up a petulant fantasy about someone who'd take away her brother because of his love for her, and that is what he did. She doesn't love HIM - that was all just part of the fantasy - but he loves her, because that's what she wanted. What makes their subsequent relationship interesting is that he IS stuck in this role, and she's not. She doesn't stay in 'whiny brat' mode after he appears, because there's more to her than that - but there isn't to him, which is why he keeps getting frustrated at her. 'I'm doing exactly what you wanted! I took the baby when you told me to take the baby! You wanted someone to love you; well, I love you - which is why I'm keeping the damn baby! You turned me into a villain; fine, I'll be REAL villainous - thereby giving you exactly what you wanted, like I've done from the beginning! A SIMPLE THANK YOU WOULD BE NICE!'

David Bowie in this movie is the reason I have unrealistic expectations of men. Definitely made me feel kinda twirly.

Sophia looks like the girl all the side characters had a crush on in every 80s movie and I'm into it as a side character myself.

The Goblin King said, "Prince of the Land of Stench". That's why when Sarah kissed Hoggle they got transported there; he just became prince of the bog of eternal stench.

A ball scene? Just *_one_* ball scene? David Bowie has a ball seen in almost every scene he's in!

Jim Henson made the movie for his daughter who was around Sarahs age, as a fairy tale comming of age. So Sarah learns to let go of childish things and grow up a bit more, but with Jareth in particular hes supposes to represent that first sexual awakening when young girls have crushes on like rock stars. Hes glamourous, a bit dangerous and sexy, but ultimatlely hes a safe fantasy she can play with and reject. The dance sequence partially represents this with the background dancers dressed and engaging in more adult ways Sarah is curious about but not ready for.

Labyrinth: lowkey scary. Neverending Story: scary moments but mostly depressing The Dark Crystal and Return to Oz: made all kids hide behind the couch at times

My impression was that the "romance" with David Bowie wasn't supposed to be an actual pairing and that his offer towards the end was really supposed to be more reflective of how teenagers sometimes have inappropriate feelings about people way older than them, hence offering to be her slave. And what is this movie about, other than angsty teenagers not knowing what they really want?

When I was a kid my sister and I asked our Dad to rent the Muppet Movie for us...he came home with this...we were instantly furious and then enthralled. We loved this film.

Funny facts: The movie was only supposed to have a few songs but Bowie insisted on more. I do believe he did the extra songs for no money. -That was the first time Jennifer danced with a man. -The dancing was choreographed by Dr Crusher from Star Trek TNG.

You probably saw it during the edit, but most of the characters are there (in one form or another) in her bedroom at the beginning. The whole story is about elements of her childhood and young-adulthood coming into conflict and resolving, including intimidating-yet-enticing codpieces and accepting her half-brother as family.

I love this movie, I'm said I didn't get to watch it when I was younger. Fun fact: Bowie stumbled down the stairs twice during the dream sequence and Connelly laughed really hard, she couldn't help it. Paraphrasing Jim Henson's own words, despite working with a neurotic pop star, a teenager, a baby, and a dog, production for the movie was pretty fun.

The Babe song, the gown, and David Bowie's crotch are forever ingrained in my brain. I remember i seriously loved this movie as a kid, but idk how I even handled it, as an adult I definitely noticed how terrifying some of the creatures were!

This movie is literally a metaphor for young teen girl sexual awakening and learning to have your own power against men and no longer fear them. I'm not great at explaining it but somewhere here on YT someone did an excellent video essay on it

David Bowie's drip in this movie is incredible and is the reason why I am the way I am.

I always felt like it was more of a platonic romance. Bowie only wanted someone to do dramatic musical numbers with him and Sarah was just perfect for the job.

Fun fact: Hoggle was played by a real dwarf (and a woman at that!), and his head is actually a robotic mask controlled by Brian Henson 😊 Edit: Fun fact #2: There was supposed to be a kiss scene between Sarah & Jareth (Sarah is supposed to be 17), but Jennifer Connelly was only 14 when she played this part, and her parents said no. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Edit #2: I *definitely* recommend watching the behind the scenes of this movie. The puppetry was done by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, so it’s no surprise it reminds you of the muppets. 😊❤️

Idk if anyone said it but fun fact: all of the goblin kings outfits were from David Bowie’s closet not the costume designer ;P

To help explain a few things: 1. The Baby was supposed to be like Jareth Jr. so that the goblins could have another king 2. The reason why there is supposed to be romance with that age gap is because they knew that girls her age tend to be more attracted to older men 2b. The movie had to do with her maturing and part of that is her maturing romantically 3. Also the bulge is fake. It is a cod piece. They did it because David Bowie's actual bulge was showing so they made a fake one instead to make him feel more comfortable. 4. Magic Dance is a cursed song and once you hear it, it will always play I'm repeat in the back of your head😅 Btw I love these reactions

The first and only movie that Jim Henson George Lucas and Steven Spielberg all three. Of the great directors all work together for this movie. The only time they all work together on a project at least to my knowledge. And also the great late David Bowie in all of his David bowie-ness in this movie.

Traumatized as a kid? This was awesome. This was Jim Henson taken to the next level. This and Dark Crystal were the best puppetry movies out there.

There is lore that this isn't the first time he has done this or tempted a girl named Sarah. If you notice when Jennifer tells Hoggle that her name is "Sarah" he goes "Yeah, that figures." totally nonchalant.

OK, so I’ve been a big fan of this movie for like so many years, I grew up with this movie, and I’ve analyzed it to the bone. Let’s start off with the reason why she wasn’t scared or that surprised that the goblin King showed up in her room is because she already knew he existed. And she knew this because Toby is not the first child that he has tried to steel. When Sarah was a baby she got stolen to buy Jared, but Jared felt bad, so Jared put baby Sarah back and waited until he was called back for her service. Moving on with the story she goes inside labyrinth finds a character name Hoggle how old is simply supposed to represent friendship and forgiveness, moving into the story she also finds Ludo. The big thing with horns. We were supposed to represent “ things are not always what they seem to be” which is a common theme in this movie. When she meets a character named sir Dinimus. The Fox creature riding the dog. He supposed to represent courage no matter how small. Her first test is between the two doors, with the guards who always tells the truth and always lies. The reason for this is, it’s supposed to represent if she’s good enough to go through, just FYI she got it correct, the reason why she fell through is because she took it for granite. Meaning she’s basically laughing at Jared “ this is just a piece of cake” basically mocking him, therefore he made a hole for her to fallen, even though she was correct. She gets wisdom from that weird old guy but the strange hat. , He was trying to hint at her that Hoggle was going to try to bring her back to the beginning. The weird red bird like creatures that jump around and take off body parts, are supposed to represent: if she’s gone mad,/crazy or not, if this is all just a dream, if she’s on drugs or something you know. Which is why they say we’re “losing our heads” or “I know what we can do take off our heads.” Another thing that I don’t think you saw, is Win Hoggle was talking to Jared Jared told him that he become a prince if Sarah kisses him. Hoggle was surprised and even with a little bit of joy in him, but then Jared said “ Prince of the land of stench” meaning he was going to drop them in the bog of eternal stench if he gets kissed by her. Which is right after he gets kissed they get dropped into the tunnel all the way to the Bog of internal stench. When Jared and Sarah meet up at the end the final battle basically. So Jared, ever since he has brought baby Sarah back, and felt bad, he fell in love with her over the years, so he basically said to her at that moment “ if you love me we can be together and we can forget about the baby, and your horrible life back at home” and she realize the fact that even though Jared was all powerful basically, he did not have the power to make up her mind, and she chose to be with Toby. Because she regrets sending him away., Because when she mentioned that she did not mean it, she didn’t mean it. Come to find out that everything that she did on a journey was absolutely true, and it was not all a dream, and one more thing that I don’t think you knew, is that the reason why Jared Kidnapped baby Toby in the first place, is so that he can turn the baby into a goblin, because all those compliments that you see inside that, we’re all children at one point, who is guardians couldn’t make it to the center of the labyrinth in time. Which is why they all look different, and not the same, because they’re different babies. And because she was the first ever to get in the center of the labyrinth she let Sarah see her friends, and all she needs to say is “ I need you all of you.” Which is why they were celebrating at the very end, because she was the first ever guardian of a child to reach the center of the labyrinth on time and convince Jared to let the baby go! Is it with my old time favorite movies ever, I have read the book, I have seen the movie, the movie did the book justice, and you are right the reason why it reminds you of the Muppets, it’s because Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets also created this movie, so it has his style in it. I apologize for the long azz comment, but I just feel like it was important for you to know the certain things, because this is a very intense story, just because it’s one of the best stories ever written.

I grew up watching this movie, and BY FAR the only thing that did and still scares me to this day, is Hoggle. That btch looks so realistic that I literally ✨ *c r i e d* ✨ when I watched the movie for the first time at age of 4.

Such an iconic film. Jennifer Connelly has always been a very attractive lady. I've had a serious girl-crush on her since I saw Requiem for a Dream for the first time almost 20 years ago. And David Bowie ❤️

This is my go-to comfort movie whenever my anxiety is really bad, and I'll often just have it on in the background while I'm cleaning or folding laundry. I don't know what it is but I just love it, I didn't even see it until I was 19 or 20.

I don't think I've ever been scared of a CGI monster after seeing it for a couple seconds but every creature in this movie is terrifying to this day.

The time my sister and I spent running around the house shouting the lyrics to Magic Dance is uncountable. (I, personally, loved the Fireys, but I guess I can see how they could be freaky haha)

This was actually one of my favorite movies when I was younger (it's still one of my favorites), but it never traumatized me lol. The scene with the Fierieys (im probably spelling that wrong), is mine and my brothers favorite scene. We have all the words memorised and everything!

The Fiery scene is part of the "Erased From Our Mind" scenes in some movies. Things that were so WTF that audience were like "Yes, that just happened, and let's never speak of it again". A scene that honestly could be deleted and you will not miss any part of the story.

the goblin king (jareth) told hoggle that he’d turn him into the “prince” of the bog of eternal stench if sarah ever kissed him so that’s why hoggle didn’t want her to kiss him because it meant he would be stuck in the bog forever.

This movie was such an experience for younger me and this reaction was just a reminder of how much I loved it.

As someone who was scared of everything as a kid... I loved this movie. Anything with the name Disney, Ray Harryhausen, Don Bluth, or Jim Henson somehow mind-whammied little kid me into handling anything on screen, I guess because I knew there would be a happy ending.

This movie did low key traumatized me and my bro when we were little lol we still jump scare each other with “give me your head”

This film was just released in Ultra HD bluray from a 4k scan of the original negatives and features an all new Dolby Atmos surround mix and new extras including deleted and extended scenes as well as screen tests of other 80s teen stars trying out for the role. I think Jim Henson and George Lucas made a very wise choice in casting. The new Limited Edition Ultra HD bluray comes in packaging made to look exactly like the book Sarah is reading from the film and it features early script pages that show lines and ideas later changed, as well as beautiful early concept art that was used to develop ideas for the film as well as to gain funding. Thank goodness Jim's son Brian Henson kept all of his fathers old material from the film. I think it also helped that he was one of the puppeteers of Hoggle as well as the voice of Hoggle. It makes sense why he would definitely want to hold on to it. Also yes, having David Bowie in full Dolby Atmos surround is every bit as fantastic as you can imagine.

I love how David Bowie wrote all the songs for the movie as well!! He was a truly exceptional talent

Late to the party but completely enjoyed this reaction. My interpretation of this movie (after it horrified me as a kid) was that it was never about a, "romance." As miniscule as it is. All through Bowie's lines and songs, (especially the final one) it sounds like he's admitting that he's doing and following what Sarah expects and believes of his world due to the book she read. He's merely putting on an act for her while she learns and grows in her quest to save her brother.

You should definitely read the Return to Labyrinth manga series! It takes place when Toby is a teenager and focuses on his point of view when he's taken to the Labyrinth. Edit: I also recommend the 12-issue comic "Labyrinth: Coronation" which details the last time someone tried to save a baby from the Labyrinth's grasp (not sure if it was done on purpose, but Jareth's romantic feelings for Sarah aren't mentioned in this).

I loved this movie as a child and still love it now, life lessons I took from this, don't take your life for granted, life isn't fair, don't judge a book by it's cover. Every time you said one of the creatures was ugly I died a little inside, child me was screaming "Don't judge a book by it's cover!!!!" I own a mug that has the worm on it that says "come inside and have a nice cup of tea".

Oh man I LOVE the look of old effects and old practical sets and the actors even inhabit their character differently on practical sets... this old style late 70s-early 80s TV and cinema is so attractive to me

The whole thing about taking the baby is that after the 13 hours, he turns into a goblin. Fun fact about that baby, he grew up, and works for the Jim Henson Company in its make up and creature department. He worked on Netflix's prequel to the movie Dark Crystal, Dark Crystal Age of Resistance.

I found a vinyl record of the soundtrack and it was the best day ever.

Late Monty Python alumnus Terry Jones co wrote the screenplay, and his Python style of humor is everywhere. She never actually steps into the swamp. She'd only stink if she "set one foot in the bog"...so they're safe😉. I love this movie!

As a person who was a kid in the 80s and was obsessed with this movies (I could quote the entire movie by the time I was 13) I don't feel traumatised by it but it definitely left a strong impression on me. And as a child with a chronic illness it had a message that I already knew but that no-one would ever really admit to me until I was older; that life is unfair, that's just how it is sometimes but don't let that stop you from moving forward. As others have said it's about an adolescent girl moving from childhood to the early stages of adulthood/adolescence. I have the special edition DVD and it came with lots of interviews and in one of them Jim Henson's son said he felt that movie was a gift for his, Jim's, daughter. The conceptual designer, Brian Froud, did a commentary and said it was a deliberate decision to have Bowie in such tight leggings because they wanted a way to show that this was an adult male not some genderless fantasy figure and they didn't want to do it as an interaction between the characters. The ball scene plays a similar role, it's about an adolescent sneaking into an adult only environment, like a club or bar, it's exciting and thrilling to be in a place you're not supposed to go to but it's also overwhelming and scary and maybe even a bit dangerous.

See, this movie was everything to me as a child. The scarier of the Jim Henson Movies is definitely The Dark Crystal! I was terrified for weeks after watching that movie when I was younger.

If you thought the visuals in this was unsettling, watch Dark Crystal next. Another Jim Henson movie, I actually like it a lot more. The design for this skeksis is the coolest puppet to this day.

Many of the Labyrinth puppets are in rotation at the Jim Henson wing of the Center For Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, including the door guards.
