For the same air temperature, pressure, humidity, wind speed, etc., descending in Boulder should be about 5% faster than at sea level. If your 7.5 hour power is really the same at 1500 m, it might be worth a trip. It also could be worth modeling this further w.r.t. optimizing power output climbing versus descending. Source: A chart on Wikipedia for density versus elevation but I did do a PhD in aerodynamics.
@winstoncat6785
@winstoncat6785 4 года назад
Great comment. It had occurred to me after Keegan's record that the aerodynamic advantage during descents was being neglected by many people and may be the most important factor of all. Definitely should be taken account of when planning a serious attempt on the record.
@philipk4475
@philipk4475 4 года назад
@@winstoncat6785 I highly doubt it. The reduced oxygen at altitude will do far more damage than a 5% difference in descending time could ever compensate. After all, you're spending almost 10x as much time climbing than descending, so an improvement of even 1% in climbing time due to higher oxygen will offset all possible air pressure gains while descending.
@haberdi
@haberdi 4 года назад
@@philipk4475 The air temp, pressure, humidity, wind speed being the same is a big "if" - pressure at altitude is lower, as is temp (generally). The reduced oxygen is a bigger factor on power output/efficiency as you said. Perhaps someone smarter than I can calculate the optimal altitude and atmospheric weather conditions to maximize everesting efficiency.
@purpleblueunicorn
@purpleblueunicorn 4 года назад
@@philipk4475 Didn't he say he had the same threshold at altitude than at sea level? So there's no improvement for him in climbing and cooler temperature might be a reason it even's out at this time of the year.

I watched that race in 2016. Morton was pure awesome but just as awesome was who came in second. A 19 year old Adrien Costa. I thought I was looking at the next American Tour winner. Then he took a break from cycling and I would google him every so often to see when he was going to start up again and then saw that he lost his leg in a rock climbing accident. It still leaves me at a loss for words.

I doubt MVDP could win GBDuro, top 5 Dirty Kanza, an Everesting record, and all the other ultra endurance stuff Lachlan does without losing a bit of his edge on the 1 to 5 hour events he’s so good at

ambient temperature and humidity are important factors to consider as well at altitude (improved cooling has a huge effect on performance). And as you noted, power drop is small under 1000 1500 meters, over 2000 is where the drop gets very significant

the maths can't be too complex, it's th same as they do for the different hour record attempts at altitude and sea level factoring in the humidity ,air pressure, temperature etc etc for this local katabatic and anabatic winds aswell as surface rolling resistance may play a part in the equation. I recall Wiggins saying if the tempeature or humidity had been the usual level when he did his hour record he would have gone 400 metres further or some such figure.

The altitude question is interesting. I remember Wiggins doing the hour record and people talking about the fact the air pressure was to high that day, and that he was doing it near sea level. I`m pretty sure slightly lower air pressure via altitude or weather is going to be an advantage. There must be a performance coach watching this who has a spreadsheet to give you a quantitative answer on what is optimal for you.

A bit of research suggests a 10% decrease in critical power at 2000 meters. At 300 W vs. 270 W for a 15 minute climb, you lose about 1:20 climbing, while descending at the higher altitude only gains about 20 seconds. So overall you'd expect to be about a minute slower for each lap. Over 30 laps, it should be possible for Lachlan to get close to 7 hours near sea level.
@worstretirementever
@worstretirementever 4 года назад
That’s threshold power. I don’t think that power loss is linear at z2 or z3. I feel like my tempo was more like 5 watts lower if at all when acclimated
@ai314159

@philipk4475
@philipk4475 4 года назад
How do you get the improvement of 20s while descending? I'd like to see the maths there
@philipk4475
@philipk4475 4 года назад
@@worstretirementever You're correct, it's untrue that power loss due to reduced oxygen follows a linear response with respect to power. I would imagine the loss would start to get very noticeable over threshold, while at z2 or z3 it would be marginal if you're well acclimated. However, I think the break even point would be in the neighbourhood of 5 W, if not less. This is first and foremost because you upwards of 7x more time on the climb than on the descent, so balacing out a 5% improvement on the descent (as per the other comment - I don't trust the numbers of a 20 second gain on a 74 second descent, that's not going to happen! (going with the descending time on Lachlan's ride here)) requires less than a 1% improvement in your climb. A 5 W higher power will result in greater than a 1% improved climbing time, so I'd do it at low altitude if possible. If you want to improve air resistance, just pick a day as warm as you can tolerate. Nevermind the increased risk of fast descending!

Intuitively, I would tend to agree with the OP. Get the altitude conditioning, but more power near sea level when you're comparatively slower is going to have a much greater effect on your overall time, than trading that off for Mach 1 descents. If you _really_ think altitude makes no diff to your power, try a semi-max 10k climb at SL and altitude.

The benefit of thinner air for downhill speed is not nearly as great as the benefit of higher power at sea level. What will make a big difference is the length of the climb. The longer the climb (given it is straight), the higher your overall average downhill speed will be because of less braking required at the bottom

How much does a dropper post weigh? Can't see that math working out. Single speed - no way. You need to be able to pedal out of the saddle at times and that requires an extra gear already. Disc brakes also no way because of weight, and ideally you only need to brake once every lap, and well adjusted rim brakes are fine for that.

You'd have to figure out the right balance between altitude (top and bottom of the climb) with your power output and also figure out the right temperature, as hotter is better but then concern over hydration and overheating. Cold air is much more dense - hence altitude gains can be overtaken by cool air. Way too many variables to allign to make it perfect, but if all right, reckon 6h is the time to smash and make it a new "hour record".

Suppose it's like the hour coming back, riders like Voigt and Brandle set the new bench mark before the current best in the discipline came in and smashed it.

I think you should consider Empire pass in Utah for your attempt

I assumed the attempts at altitude locations were chosen because the climbs themselves were conducive for a fast everesting challenge.

Good story about Lachlan, don't forget your big boy pants on your next everesting attempt 😂

You should ask Hambini for an engineering analysis on that downhill speed differential.

going downhill as noted by others at altitude is big see www.insidescience.org/news/why-speed-skaters-perform-better-higher-elevation -- the other advantage of elevation is the humidity is lower -- air pressure is lower by over 20% -- great story and train well, then you can send Lachlan a pair of new big boy pants when you are done.

@JTMarlin8
@JTMarlin8 4 года назад
Best way to train for it is to just do it. Every week. The times will start coming down and sooner or later, the record is broken. Moreover, competitors will be so demoralized by the thought of him doing 52 Everesting attempts per year that they won't even bother trying it. It'll be his forever!

I'm no mathematician either, but old Lachlan topped out at 75.4mph on the Strava ride. Presumably he hit 75mph repeatedly on each descent. Altitude could be faster! 🧐

Na that was the speed he climbed. Took it easy on the descent to rest.
