Lachy Doley - My Hammond Organ and Leslie Speaker SETUP in depth 

Great run through on your rig! Not sure how you are getting the awesome overdrive (Jon Lord-ish) sound? Are you running though an overdrive pedal somewhere in the mix?? I am on a 1967 B3 with a 122 and get awesome sound - but I don't think I can get that overdrive sound without running through a Marshall or an overdrive pedal?? Thoughts?

I have been a Hammond fan all my life, and RU-vid helped me discover Lachy only yesterday ! Well... I am only 65 !!! Lachy is awesome, and it is lovely to get this tour of his fabulous instruments ! Oh... by the way... my Aussie nickname is 'Speedy' ! I got it when I was at sea years ago, cuz I saw the punchline of jokes a little bit after others did ! I am only 65.... I think I said that.

Great video. If you haven't already, I'd love to see a rundown of the different drawbar settings you use. Maybe with some insight on why you use them, what makes them sound like they do and how you manipulate them to get the sounds you and other artists love.

Great overview. Lots of Hammond techs take a line out from one phase of the AO 28 preamp balanced output like this, but for anyone looking to “line out” one of these another approach is to take the G-G and a ground connection through a matching transformer to go balanced-unbalanced. That seems to get the best signal out of the organ for me (found the tip on one of the tech forums). Another way to protect the transformer if you can’t get a gold top rectifier is to fuse the primary AND secondary windings. Great work Lachy, hope to see a gig soon!

Hi Lachy, I really enjoyed your video, thanks a lot for showing us your Hammond gear! A guy called Kon Zissis (who, to my knowledge, lives in Melbourne) should be able to replace the oil waxpaper capacitors in your Hammond if you ever want to do that and even beef it up a little with his 12AX7-based EQ/overdrive. By coincidence, I'm also the proud owner of a '57 Hammond C3 and I just had the generator capacitors replaced. The dullness is completely gone. The organ sounds fresh, runs very quiet and it's much louder too - an overall improvement. IMHO, the entire waxpaper capacitor mysticism is utter nonsense - from a technical point of view anyway - and replacement can only be recommended as long as it's done by a technician who knows what he's doing.

Great playing! I also had a Trek two combo preamp which I had a friend install a second foot switch to stop the rotors. Also I think the pedal and output control allows one to bring distortion to the tubes /valves, with out maxing out speaker load as is the case with the standard Leslie kit. Keeps you from damaging drivers and speakers and still play LOUD!

Super rig and run-down and brilliant tone, Lachy. We used an M100 + 147 (wood) with volume/swell pedal - combo amp escapes me. Two Leslie hand switches, one mounted on the front of the lower manual, other on the side, plus one on the floor by left foot. This was for studio work. OTR, a Korg BX3, old Leslie 145, as Hammond was too darn heavy doing the stairs. I was running a 9-10 piece soul band touring UK...

Great video about the best sounding Hammond rig since early 70:s Jon Lord! Amazing that you still have the old wax paper caps. The Hammond organ and Leslie speakers are so wonderful. Just discovered you and your channel…outstanding! I have a 1965 A105 with a 122 and a ‘65L101 with a 147, and the TrekUC-1A as well. I got the trek as a way to run everything else in the studio through a Leslie if I want to, but wasn’t clued into the Trek line out mod for the organ. I’ve had my XK3 through two Leslies, but never the A. I’ll be sorting that out, thanks for the inspiration! I play all kinds of styles, but what you do is very much the core of what I love. Can’t wait to catch a show someday!

i just realised i need a hammond lol........ as a kid i always was messing around with organ sounds on my keyboard for hours straight.. sounds i like the most is that rotary effect coming from that leslie, never knew its because of real rotating speaker parts xP awesome

Thanks for this presentation, Lachy! Interesting to see what you are using. After a long brake of at least 10 years, I took on playing again when the pandemic started. I have a poor man's organ, the Roland VK-7, which been with me for 20+ years already. Still happy about the weight being only 15 kg. A few months ago I got a good deal on a VK-77, which has the same engine, but two manuals, more options and actually sounds better for some strange reason (thought I imagined it, but my band mates tell me the same). Still only using the internal sim, but now been thinking that at some point a Leslie would be great to add to that, since it would bring the sound to a whole new level. The VK-7/77 has a built in 11-pin connection so I would not be needing the Trek 2 UC 1A pedal (depending on the Leslie model), but maybe it would be a good add-on - interesting anyway, because I was not aware of this pedal before. Thanks for the walk-through! I've been follow you for a while now, since the Glenn Hughes' Resonate album and at some point ordered a bunch of CDs directly from you! Keep it up! Hopefully you'll come to northern Europe to play some gigs soon!

thank you for your reply,the reason i changed all capacitors was that my organ was old and battered had been standing in a garage for fifteen years in a cold garage so it was corroded all over, then we got it going and cleaned up anyway,and things broke from time to time, then i finally decided to exchange every loose end,all tubes and risky capacitors,some capacitor broke once and i got and extra strange sound,now its more reliable and i got a more beefy sound all the grit and everything is better,love your playing hope we will see you in scandinavia sometime when the pandemi is over

You are a fantastic player of the Hammond organ. I hear a lot of the late great Jon Lord (Deep Purple) in your playing style and sound. Also you have a Hammond sound that is very similar to the great Lee Michaels (his early music). I am a Hammond player myself. I use a early 60s B3 with a 145 Leslie near me on stage and a pair of 760s on the back line. I also use the 760s in conjunction with my Marshall full stack when playing guitar. Love that totally unique guitar sound that I get. I hope to get a chance to see you perform when you get to the USA. Keep on rocking. Peace brother!

Saw you shred it up at Harmonie German Club this week - it was great to meet you! You've definitely inspired me to up my organ game a lot, so I'm researching like crazy - Im playing there next month, I'll try to sneak in a tribute if I can muster the skill for it by then, haha! Thanks for this video, it's really awesome to see the setup, I rarely get to see these beauties in person these days - organs are all digital now - they can sound pretty great but nothing beats the real thing. nice video i changed all capacitors on my a100 and i promise it sounded a thousand times better,almost like a new organ, but still had the raw sound we all like,it took me 20 hours to do

Hi Lachy, thanks! I think the 145s have a passive frequency crossover. It is amazing that you haven't yet blown the old Jensen treble driver! You could experiment with a bi-amping setup. I did this with my old 900. This can protect the treble drivers (yes, I use 2, with a 'Y' adapter), and an active crossover, to separate Bass and Treble amps to get maximum output from each range. But, I can get maximum efficiency, without stressing any of the drivers. I use two 15" woofers on a wedge baffle, over the lower rotor. Usually, bass drivers need 2 - 3 times the power of the treble drivers. Very inefficient! (As you can guess, I hate miking - because it destroys the reason for rotors, in the first place! Most of the sound still has to do with the drawbar settings. Just a thought. I very much enjoy your work! ❤ Yes, this will affect the sound of the Leslie. But, for me, it makes the sound more malleable, adaptable.

Killer sound and chops. Come and tour the US, we're not in hyper lock down like OZ. I love your 145 (I have a shell that I'm going to rebuild....have all the twiddly bits and amp collected...), but I would recommend putting a cloth cover on the bass rotor. Uncovered, the motor is working harder in FAST mode...in my experience, it doesn't reach the same terminal speed w/o the cover.

Nice setup! About those Leslie horn drivers.... over the years I went through quite a few JBL & EV high power drivers. Every time one of those blew I would always stick the stock Leslie driver back in. Finally I just stuck with the stock driver. I have never blown on e of those. Oh, BTW, I powered my Leslies with 50 watt Marshall heads, 120 watt Orange heads, or 100 watt Traynor heads. Yep, those stock drivers are beasts! Good to see you're doing well. Stay safe!

Very cool, thank you. Yeah, woofers (cone speakers) wear out and get sloppy. Interesting that the Leslie volume is maxed. In semi conductors the input (pre) is maxed. I might have to play with my tube amp and try upping the amp out. I can't believe how the vibrato has lasted through the beatings and moving. Cheers!

Uhta woofers way to go any of the old Flat wound coil transducers should be able to respond to fast & transient signals no problem.That classic Leslie Growl🤘

Back in the '70s when we played on The Belle of Louisville the power would fluctuate and I'd have the same pitch issue with my B3. :)

Excellent video and thanks for posting! I have been a fan of your style from the first time I heard you play so hope your videos get out to every Hammond fan on planet earth. Your use of TREK II products is spot on and especially the OBL-2. We install OBL-2 units on all the B3's and C3's that we sell since it can add so much and at the same time take the strain off the speakers in the Leslie. Mainly we use the low pass output. I personally do not suggest running the Leslie on 11 and am amazed that your V-20 speaker has lasted so long. It's working for you so carry on, and you are the BEST, hard playing Hammond player around. (Maybe be on the lookout for a spare V-20?) Most V-21's would not handle the 11 setting. We have had to recone dozens of V-21's in the last year so I am hypersensitive about pushing them too hard. We have several 1957 B3's and some 1957 C3's in our store along with most of the other years as well. Something about a 1957 Hammond and a 1957 Chevy that speaks to the quality of what was manufactured in the USA in those days. LONG LIVE VINTAGE HAMMOND ORGANS (and the people that play and listen to them) Great Job!

That C3 is a lovely beast!!! Frequency converters are essential - I've got one in my '61 A100 chopper, and no matter where I play and whatever the power source: I'm in tune 😎 I did add a few things: an additional FX-loop that also allows me to crank up the signal in the AO28 preamp, to get that much beloved roar! But also a more powerful Atlas high end driver in my Leslie, as those old Jensens won't endure our style of playing for very long (you're lucky there mate! 🤣🤣🤣🤣) I simply love Hammond organs... I firmly believe that my A100 plays me as much as I play her, an absolutely visceral experience.
