I’m not giving any safety advice. I have received several comments on not using harnesses on my solar job. It is best to hire a professional of course. If you insist on doing it yourself. I think I would feel most comfortable with a ladder that had at least 3 to 4 feet above the roof edge. The problem is you need that roof edge ladder overhang to support The panel and create a handhold for yourself when you swipe the panel off the carrier to the right or left. I attempted to show this situation in the video where I am on the roof side of the ladder leaning down toward the panel carrier. It is also very comforting if the Ladder is anchored At the top of the roof somehow Preventing drift. I have seen one other design where roller ball bearings Were used on the sled Causing less friction between the sled and the ladder face. They do Rent shingle lifts that you could rig as solar panel carriers. You may want to look at that also. I did end up doing this by myself but it is not recommended. Best to have somebody to study the ladder and standby for any unexpected events. Also a large panels once you get them off the ladder are not that easy to deal with. Get a harness. Also you should find a way to rig a line on your panel in case you need to put it down and not have it slide off.
I was able to lift and install all 7 385w panels on the roof by myself. The design shown in the video was unchanged. I think the most critical thing to realize is that you should test your setup before you hoist a live panel. I used a plywood as a "test panel" with the approximate dimensions as my Hanwa 385w panels. The ply wood was heavier. Make sure you understand all the hangup points and know in advance how you will manipulate the control lines to un-foul expected hang ups. Do not walk below the panel. I think it is reasonable to have an alternate ladder rigged for roof access in addition to the hoisting ladder as I did. I spent a few hours looking at videos before I ended up with this system and I'm sure I cold have done something better but I didn't want to spend too much time given this was a one use project.
