Every gesture, every choice in phrasing adds purpose, nuance and meaning to an already deep and cynical lyric. Sondheim is quoted as saying he always chose a great actor over a great singer when casting. Stritch is perfect because her voice is a graveled path rather than paved highway. She does not sing, she creates a character and breathes life.

There are countless women with better voices and perhaps prettier too, but none could come within a mile of this incredible performance from Elaine Stritch. Thank god it's on film and thank you for posting it here.

I was fortunate enough to see her do "At Liberty At the Carlyle" and "Elaine Stritch: Singing Sondheim...One Song At a Time", and both were beyond great! I was able to get to speak with her, after both performances, and she was such a pleasure--she let me get pictures with her both times, and signed my "At Liberty" DVD. When she asked me the date, being awestruck, I stammered the wrong date, then corrected myself, and she replied, "Aw--you're full of (expletive deleted)! I took that as a badge of honor. She was truly one of a kind, and I love her for it! I miss that she is no longer with us.

She's also almost eighty in this video. She owned this song in the 70s, and the audience gets that. Sometimes our abilities decrease when we get older. You'll discover that, once you make it out of high school.

I love Lupone; she's magnificent in the NPH production of Company. That said, no one can ever be better in this role--written for Stritch--than Elaine. People can be different in fine ways and excellent in their own interpretation, but no one can snarl like Elaine, no one else can deliver innuendo and sarcasm coupled with irony in quite the same way. Her cast recording of "Ladies Who Lunch" is definitive for the original show. Stritch is the queen of Company (and other shows). But I also loved Lupone's performance. Great artists give you greatness from their guts. Both women qualify.

I've got this recording. The music (lyrics and harmony) evokes the superficial sophistication one of these "ladies who lunch" might feel while dining with their snotty, or at least stupid and clueless, but certainly wealthy friends. The song ends with a sort of regal fanfare as the soloist bids everyone to rise in tribute to these queens of domestic comfort and eventual boredom.

Amazing. This takes me back to 1972 when (some of) the Broadway cast came to London for the West End production. Up until that point, with a few exceptions, I'd only seen 'nice' English musicals. Company was a revelation. And Stritch blew me away. I still get goosebumps when I hear her sing this.

Don't know if it's possible to fix a description, but this performance is from My Favorite Broadway: the Leading Ladies. (There was another show called My Favorite Broadway: the Love Songs that was done a year or two later, but this isn't on it. Nor should it be since it isn't a love song!) Elaine's performance of this song is iconic. Just terrific.
