Edith became more attractive as the seasons moved on. She even outshone Mary at the end.

I agree, Michael was strong and clever. I don’t think Bertie is too strong. Bertie might have Edith taking care of all the decisions. Michael’s character seemed to be a type who’d share the tasks. Anyway I love her character. Sybil’s character was my favorite but she left the show. Edith had courage, substance and heart something Mary had to try to work at. Though Mary’s character tried Edith was the one to admire.

I liked Michael, but I also like Bertie and I kind of prefer him with Edith the Michael. Her love story with Michael was doomed from the get go. But aside from that it was never what I considered a good match. Yes he made her horizons bigger and helped her find the place she fit and who she was within that. But to me Bertie was always more her match. Like Edith he had figured that stuff out. They had a better chemistry in the beginning, and shared the same awkwardness when they interacted with new people. In my mind they were equals in their relationship.

Same! I liked Bertie as a character but I had hoped that Edith would end up as a modern woman running her own business. She always seemed happiest when she had a purpose. I can't help but feel like she'll be bored organising tea parties as marchioness

Bertie is only good for outranking Mary witch was very satisfying. But the loss of Gregson caused so much pain to Edith than in fact it was very sad.

This entire story arc just broke my heart. Here we have a gentleman traveling to Pre-WWII Germany to finally divorce his invalid wife just to legitimately marry Lady Edith. Here too we have a man who Loves Lady Edith for both her whit, her style, her charm, her personality. By the time she realized she was pregnant with Marigold, Michael had already been killed and his body undiscovered till a year or two later. Fast forward to the situation with the Drew's at Yew Tree Farm. For which I completely disapprove of how it was handled from start to finish.

It was a great story ... but the disappearance was too enigmatic. A few more details would have made it more intriguing, As it was, it was credible but too dry to be involving.

@AStoryGood I too was hoping the same thing. The most daunting thing was how this storyline followed her all the way to the end of series. And it made a quick blurb in the movie.

This story line was poignant and tragic, but contributed so much to Edith's growth. I also thought it plausible, and a grim foreshadowing of the ominous threat that was to come from the Nazis. The Drews' sub-plot was tough to swallow. Maybe Mrs. Drew should have been brought in on the secret. But Fellowes did bring it all together, with William's father getting the farm after Marigold's abduction.

I actually loved Bertie. What a humble yet immensely competent, good, brave and sensible guy. He deserved her, and she him. And she wouldn't have been that woman had she not had, and lost, Michael.

@@ChrisChanningChannel My guess is that the character of Michael Gregson simply appeared too little in the show to be lucrative enough. Then again, it was a fitting ending that Edith married the Marquess, I believe a rung up in the nobility above Edith's own papa, and a rung below the position currently held by Prince Charles!

I’ve always thought that Michael Greyson was the anti Sir Richard Carlisle as the only thing these two men have in common is that they’re both wealthy and owners of a huge publishing company. Other than that, they couldn’t be worlds apart from each other. Michael was the best of both worlds in terms of wealth and personal character and he was perfect for Edith!

I have mixed feelings about this relationship due to the fact that it was an affair. However, I have to agree on Fellowes’s view on it. In the Season 3 script book, he says that Edith falls for Gregson because he gives her permission to be herself. Too many times we have seen her thwarted or ignored, but he expresses an interest in her opinions. I know that Edith has made a ton of mistakes, but I can’t help but root for her after everything she’s been through.

I admit, I was a bit worried when Edith signed all of those papers for Michael without even reading it. It made me suspicious of Michael as some sort on conman who tricked Edith into signing her fortune to him with the promise of marriage, even though he was still technically married to another woman. So it was a relief to find out that Michael’s love for Edith was genuine and he was telling the truth when he made her the sole beneficiary of all of his wealth and assets. They really did loved each other and it’s tragic how it ended between them.

Edith says she can't stand the thought of a married man flirting with her, yet during the war when she was helping the farmer Drake, she was kissing and flirting with him and he was married. His wife saw them and basically "fired" Edith from helping at the farm.

You do realize she was way younger then, and up to that point almost no one cared what she had to say? And the kindly farmer actually talked to her and seemed to recognize her value? I'm not saying kissing a married man was smart or right, I'm saying I can understand why she did it.
@coffeebean8790

Read the Season 2 script book. According to Fellowes's notes, that relationship was not going to last beyond a kiss. Therefore, Edith had no intention of trying to steal that guy from his family. Fellowes really should have made that detail clearer in the show.

She didn't seem so keen on the institution of marriage when she was snogging Farmer Drake...
@coffeebean8790
@coffeebean8790 3 года назад
I've read the Season 2 script book and according to Fellowes's notes on that incident, neither Edith nor Drake expected it to last beyond a kiss. Fellowes noted that Edith would not have run off with some farmer and Drake would not have eloped with a daughter from the big house. That tells me that that relationship would have fizzled after the kiss, even if Mrs. Drake had not intervened. While I get that she shouldn't have kissed him, I now wish that Fellowes had made it clearer on the show itself that that kiss was not the beginning of some affair.

One kiss and you think that equals breaking up a marriage? It was clearly wrong but doesn’t mean that Edith had no morals or scruples.

I feel like this shows perfectly how she has grown as a character. From someone who kisses a married man to someone who won't tolerate even flirting from a married man. People change, and I'm glad Edith has changed in this respect.

@@JA268 He could not legally divorce her. British divorce law at the time required the party not initiating the divorce had committed adultery, and in the case of women divorcing men (until 1923) there had to be further aggravating factors. If I understand the tidbits I'm picking up correctly, even if she had committed adultery, she wouldn't have been deemed competent, still making a divorce not an option. Divorce on the grounds of insanity didn't become legal until 1937. So...I guess if Michael hadn't gone to Germany, he and Edith could have eventually married, but only after waiting about 15 years.
