She was also a dim-witted mother in this case. I mean, she was speaking at a relatively normal volume within earshot while standing in full view while "hiding" behind a translucent piece of glass, and then assuming that her daughter was too stupid to seeing standing there having a conversation with Carson and then walking down the hallway. Cora was going to lie about being surprised, and so are we to assume that Sybil was going to lie about not seeing her mother?
Me too, hahaha, "what in wonderland do you call that?! I mean--" was one of the highlights of the clip 😂 I know that people like Mrs. Patmore sound harsh, but some of my best teachers and mentors were exactly like that and it is hilarious every time, and gives me combined warm/fuzzy feelings and perfectionist terror to hear her lol Edited to correct bad punctuation :-P
Cora's reaction to seeing her noble-born daughter choosing to act for herself and interact with the Help in performing the simple task (which is a WAR ZONE of a task to someone who's never lifted a finger to dress themselves) of baking a cake, for HER her mother, is one of the wholesome, endearing moments that madebthis show so great!!! Elizabeth McGovern played her role to a T!!
Right! Thats like when everyone was given Kendal (?) Jenner the stuff for not knowing how to cut a cucumber 🥒, yes it was funny but she never had to *DO* any of that herself, like kids when they go to college & have to wash their clothes for the 1st time. Heck there are whole channels here on RU-vid to teach us things we *should* have learn but for whatever reason did not learn. I know I use them *ALL* the time😂 lol my dad was giving us the guff over changing a car battery, it’s so easy guys : yeah but we’ve not done it before or been shown how to 😂 now we *do* know how to do an oil & tire change cause we were taught as teens😂 pardon me for going on and on a bit off topic🥴🫠😂 Yes it was lovely to see Lady S in the kitchen and how she didn’t chastise them for giggling at her but still asked for their help so no one else would laugh at her . Lovely girl❤
@@FelicianoCookie That was definitely one of the hardest TV deaths (if not THE hardest), not just because how great Sybil was, but also because of all the brilliant acting from every one. I was sobbing uncontrollably the whole time, which doesn't happen very often while watching the show/movie/etc...
0:37 I love that Isobel's first instinct is to comfort Sybil with a hug and a kiss. Physical affection never seemed very common in the upper class of that time, but its a reminder that Isobel is of a lower class and Sybil was raised by an American mother who seemed to express her love more openly than a lot of the British mothers on the show. Its a lovely little moment
@@azure9729 indeed, it was when Thomas was pissed nanny West didn't want him to interact / play with Sybill's daughter. I think it was the only time in the show Thomas referred someone as a friend. Although I've got a bit dissappointed we didn't see them interact more since both of them served during the war (different roles but still), specially because Thomas always felt like an outcast. I'm sure they did interact offscreen but it would have been nice to see it onscreen.
I think Cora is proud of how her daughter didn't harden her heart with her concerns and grief. She is proud of her daughter, for many reasons, one being that she simply chose to do the next right thing.
That little moment when Isobel calls out O'Brian, the change in her voice while still talking to Sybil, how she gave her looks while still paying attention to Sybil... the finest acting. Also love how Mrs Patmore stays Mrs Patmore whoever there is in her kitchen lol
Chef's don't have time to worry about niceties in their kitchen they want things done properly and judging by the cooking shows they have big egos and alot of professional pride lol
@@kerriethompson2073 - he got his revenge, to a degree, through Thomas saying 'Her Ladyship's soap.' which caused O'brian to flee Downton. He kept that dirt hidden and played his cards perfectly.
@@andytod116 That would make sense. I was wondering why she left so suddenly. Taking the first chance when she found out Thomas told Bates and possibly someone else about her sin, it makes sense now
@hyrulphicsound For me it looked more like they decided she likes to travel to suddenly, like, literally the first episode she heard the offer, the script said she likes to travel. I didn't notice before that moment any hints saying she liked to travel, so that was very confusing
Sybill is so pure. She's angelic in every way imaginable, her look, her manners and most important of all her heart. Her character in the series assures us that despite the cruel world we're dwelling, there's an earth angel living among us.
Sybil was such a beautiful character, physically and spiritually. I think on this occasion, Carson needed his pomposity deflated a little by a mother's pride.
Ha! "Pomposity" is a perfect word to describe Carson.

Carson is a man of good qualities, but his pomposity really gets on my nerves. Perhaps that's because I'm one hundred years ahead of him; back then, his behavior would have shown off as just stern.
@@Irgendeinname0815 when Gwen comes back & tells the family how Sybil helped her, the entire family is surprised. except Tom (with the SAME LOOK on his face as this scene). I can't recall if he knew Sybil was helping Gwen, but it doesn't surprise him at all
@@SamanthaN92 I like Henry, though he's very different than Matthew (who I love), and I gather the actor has also been in a lot of other productions so his availability was limited. I believe that's the reason why he only appeared briefly in the first movie.
@@rowanaforrest9792 I was thinking the same thing when I first saw the film. I was like: "Why wasn't Henry not in most of the movie considering he's Mary's new husband"? They show him towards the end because he was at a motor show.
I have enormous respect for anyone who could successfully cook and bake back then! Recipes from that time were quite cryptic; ovens were wood-fired; and refrigeration was a novelty. The things cooks created, much less at catering levels, are astonishing!
I'm pretty sure gas-powered ovens and stoves were already in widespread domestic use by the late Victorian era-- certainly by the Pre-War era and WWI wherein this show takes place. Maybe this wasn't the case, though, for these older manor houses?
My grandma had one wood fired oven. Can't compare it to modern ones. Made food taste like heaven. And would also heat up a room. So fun to stay in the kitchens in the dead of winter.
Cora's character is so interesting! She values tradition, so far as it is sensible and uplifting, and is also courageous in the face of change. She's adventurous and fun, yet still elegant and respectable. She's the kind of lady we all like to think we'd be in her position. 😊
Daisy: “course we will, won’t we?” Mrs. Parmore: “well, if you say so!” I love how Daisy and Ms. Patmores relationship has evolved throughout this series. From daisy being a scullery maid to now actually having a voice and choice in the kitchen.
I love the way the actress plays Sybil. I find her portrayal to be the most convincing. It's hard to play a character in a period piece and still make the character feel like a real person. More than any of the other characters I find Sybil the most convincing in the way the speaks, her mannerisms etc. Anna's actress is also great.
Cora watching Sybil cook with eyes full of pride, I tell myself, Sybil was better than Mary and Edith Seriously, Downton Abbey is still one of the best series I've ever seen.!!

Each of them sisters had their own qualities, as well as flaws. As lovable and sweet as Sybil was, she was also a daydreamer and a quixotic idealist. Her utopian view of the future would have embittered and disappointed her in the long run. Both Mary and Edith were much more pragmatic women than Sybil, and pragmatism is something I value very much.
Lady Sybil was my favorite of ALL the characters. I haven't watched the show in a few years, but I remember a scene where when one of the Maids was hungry and - I think - it was Anna said that she should eat Lady Sybil's breakfast biscuits... that, "She wouldn't mind". If that was the only sentence referencing Lady Sybil's character, it would be enough for the audience to understand the kind and humble person she was.
I believe Isobel was the kindest person on the show. When Sybil tells her that her friend is dead I’m sure she had no idea who he was and had likely never met him but says “What a terrible thing.” A kind response.
Sybil was a character that was literally to be admired, for her confidence and her courage in doing things, She and Matthew were the best of the series Downton Abbey (Along with Mad Men) was one of the best series I have seen in my life, I am willing to see it again. ❤️
Imagine him thinking "right....if I ever marry this woman I'll be the cook." Taking eating a slice of the questionable cake but smiling all his way through at the look of pride on her face.
Don't forget that while Cora may have been of the American upper class, the family was newly rich and not that far removed from middle class. A breadth of life skills is generally considered desirable, and not all such skills are pleasant and most aren't that easy.
Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from A Place Beyond Courage by Elizabeth Chadwick: “Knowing how to knead dough or fashion pastry might not be essential to her education, but her mother let her do it, reasoning that a wife who had a broad knowledge of what went on in the domestic quarters would be better qualified to run a household than one who shut herself away in the bower and learned little but stitchery.”
In the American novel Little Women the mther character tells her daughters that it was very helpful for her to learn the basics of the kitchen. When she was rich she could run better the husehold, and when she was poor she could do things by herself. Maybe Cora read the book and was inspired by it
@@vilwarin5635 It was in a later season and a completely different context, but Cora definitely mentioned Little Women at one point, so she was clearly familiar with it.
When Cora sees the joy on Sybil's face as her cake comes out of the oven and is a success... that overrode any objections she might have had. Seeing her daughter so happy was what Cora wanted for her. Such a great scene with stellar acting.
I love that Sybil didn’t recognize class distinctions. It’s a lasting testament to her beautiful heart and I was sorry to see her go from Downton Abbey.
"What in wonderland do you call that?!?! I mean, I do not fully understand what you are trying to do mi'lady." It is quite amusing when Mrs. Patmore forgets who she's talking to and just whips out the insults. In this moment, she was the equalizer.
From what I’ve read, many aristocratic young men died in the two world wars - even royalty wasn’t spared, as one of the princes was apparently killed in an air crash during WW2 (but I don’t remember if it was during a battle specifically)
It's so weird how Isobel's comment "What a terrible thing," could be taken as sarcasm now, but in this it sounds sincere. No judgments, language naturally changes over time, just found it interesting.
Yes I know she is a character but Some people bring so much Joy to others for just being who they are. She made a joyful impact on her viewers and it hurt us deeply when she was taken away.💔
This is one of my all time favorite downton scenes. The pride on cora's face is shining. The interaction between sybill and daisy is awesome. I miss this show. Ive watched it end to end at least three or four times. I think its one of the best shows ever on tv. Im no expert or critic but the writing was top notch. The depth of each character, the character development over the years, so good. My wish is another season. I doubt it will happen but i can hope. I am in new york. Last year i went to a downton abby trivia night. First prize was tickets to a Giants game which i wanted really bad. Well, i didnt win but i got third out of a whole room of people. I even surprised myself. Happy Holidays everyone. Stay safe. Peace to all!!
I just realized Tom entered the scene and saw Sybil with the cake and in the shots where it shows Cora's POV, Tom walks by while eyeing Sybil before leaving :'>
Who annoys you more O'Brian for eavesdropping or Carson for dry snitching because Sybil wanted to learn a freaking survival skill, in order to help others?????
If only Cora has given Edith a quarter of the love and attention she gave to Sybill. But I suppose, since Sybill is the daughter most like Cora, it's not surprising she was her mother's favourite
It’s Sep 2024 and I started watching this magnificent British television series once again. I so love Lady Sybil’s character and Ms. Jessica Brown Findlay performed this role so brilliantly that it suited her to a T…her voice, her beauty, her bearing was to behold. Absolutely Beautiful!
I find myself in soany of the characters in this show, the writing is superb, the casting of the actors is perfect, I think I find myself most in Mrs. Crawley here, she is outspoken but kind and seems to always fight for the little person and I LOVE her for it ❤️
Cora: I'll lie to Sybil about not knowing about the cake. Sybil: I'll lie to Mama about not seeing or hearing her standing there watching me making a cake.
