Los Angeles Fire Department Light Force 94 was initially dispatched alone to a rubbish fire on the 4400 blk. of S. Crenshaw Blvd. at 00:24 hours. While enroute, their incident was upgraded to a structure fire.
Units assigned: AR2 CM22 BC4 BC5 BC705 BC11 BC13 BC18 TF10 TF26 TF27 TF61 TF66 TF94 LF11 LF15 LF21 LF95 LF92 E1 E3 E13 E14 E34 E46 E64 E68 E209 HR3 UR27 UR88 EM1 EM9 EM11 RA15 RA27 RA34 RA66 RA246 RA266 PI1 HE1 EA1 RT83
LF94 was first on scene of a two-story commercial building (200 x 100, two separate businesses) with fire through the roof and requested additional resources. Personnel began the firefight in offensive mode, attacking the blaze from the interior. However, heavy fire load and difficulty accessing the source of the fire forced companies out of the building, off the roof, and into a defensive posture.
One firefighter was injured (non-life threatening) when a roll-up door collapsed on him, he was transported by RA34.
Knockdown was called in 90 minutes with 160 personnel, an adjacent three story commercial building was exposed but was sustained no extensive damage. LAFD Arson conducted an investigation.
Crews were on scene throughout the morning for an extensive overhaul operation and extinguishing remaining hot spots.

Awesome video! I'm curious though why a department that size doesn't have prepiped waterways on their tillers?
@mackflickerson6722
@mackflickerson6722 3 года назад
The most likely reason is that, if a pre-piped waterway become damaged or inoperable, the apparatus is out of service for a few weeks for it's $80,000 repair. If a ladder pipe becomes damaged or inoperable, the department orders a replacement for about $1,500.
@mackflickerson6722
@mackflickerson6722 3 года назад
And the other reason is that the primary purpose of aerial ladders in cities like LA is not to establish elevated master streams (about 30%), but instead to access roofs and elevated positions for rescue and ventilation (about 70%). The aerial needs to be extended about 12' to create a situation where the appliance at the end of a pre-piped waterway is not longer interfering with the end of the ladder. In many cases, 12' of extension isn't possible, so the appliance would prevent the aerial from being effectively for this purpose.
@equipment-enthusiast
@equipment-enthusiast 3 года назад
@@mackflickerson6722 I can understand to an extent on what your saying but usually the nozzle is not all the way to the end of the ladder anyways. I don't see any other big city like NY for example that doesn't have tillers without pre piped water ways. Just seems it be taxing to carry hose all the way the ladder.
@mackflickerson6722
@mackflickerson6722 3 года назад
@@equipment-enthusiast typically the hose used to assemble the ladder pipe, and the pipe appliance itself, are stored on the deck of the cabinets immediately next to the aerial, so it's not very long to carry anything. On a pre-piped waterway, the nozzle appliance rests immediately below the tip of the aerial when the aerial is fully retracted, making is cumbersome to position the tip of the aerial in a window or at a roof ledge. Also, since you keep citing FDNY, I think you'd find that, with the exception of the tower ladders, none of FDNY's ladders are pre-piped.
@ffjsb
@ffjsb 3 года назад
@@mackflickerson6722 Well you're supposed to train your firefighters so that the waterway doesn't get damaged... The time it takes them to set up a ladder pipe is excruciatingly long. And with the number of large flat roofed buildings, quick aerial streams are a must. LA doesn't have many platforms, if they have any at all. Reminds me of 1970's tactics...
@jvandyke8079
@jvandyke8079 3 года назад
Why does it seem that LA has such poor water pressure? I see these guys with the lines barely making it 30 feet in a lot of videos... Is this due to the supply to the engine being that low that the engine can't pump it fast enough to pressurize it? Or is this the engines themselves?

@mackflickerson6722
@mackflickerson6722 3 года назад
@@ffjsb You've got all the answers. Pre-pipe those waterways for days. Damage due to a strike of the appliance isn't fixed by changing seals. Our department throws aerials about 10 times a day. We have a mix of pre-piped and ladder pipes. We're transitioning back to ladder pipes due to trouble making some throws because of the appliance. Proper training can make attaching the ladder pipe extraordinary efficient. But again, you do you.

Metro is very annoying with the time when they know that this incident is a confirmed structure fire that will last hours in fighting. They keep asking for updates. The Command staff has more issues with fighting this fire then telling metro what's going on with the incident. Is metro not monitoring the frequency?
@FB1ResponseVideos
@FB1ResponseVideos 3 года назад
on every structure fire, Metro lets the incident commander know how much time is on the incident clock at least every 10 mins., this helps IC know how much progress has been made in whatever amount of time has passed, usually once Metro does an incident clock check, the IC will give another update/ask for additional resources in return.

Not a firefighter what is class 1?. Is FDNY considered class 1?. Why does lafd have no tower ladders like FDNY???
@Maizefire
@Maizefire 3 года назад
So class one is a insurance thing so basically insurance companies rate fire departments throughout the United States and it's actually a very small number fire departments that are considered class 1 and the last time I checked FDNY was not class one and let me put this in a better way so everyone can understand class one basically means that have fire department has more chances of saving your home but that's just in the insurance company's eyes and also insurance companies will charge cheaper rates for when you live in a Class 1 fire department area if I'm correct also to answer the question on lafd using tillers instead of towers the tillers are a lot more better for the streets of LA do to them having a bunch of one-way streets as well and FDNY has both towers and tillers.
@Maizefire
@Maizefire 3 года назад
Oh and to also add there's only three hundred fire departments in the United States that are considered class 1 so not every Fire Department in the u.s. is considered class 1 but again that's just insurance company looking at that doesn't necessarily mean that the fire department won't do a good job and saving your home

Class 1 means a firefighting apparatus that the NFPA considers to be fully equipped for structural firefighting. For example, for an engine to be Class 1, it needs to be capable of carrying 4 firefighters and their equipment, have a minimum 300 gallon tank and 1000 gallon-per-minute pump, plus minimums for hose, ground ladders, saws and other equipment. A Class 2 engine is usually built on a commercial rather than custom chassis, and only needs to be capable of carrying 3 FFs and pump 300 GPM. Class 3 and 4 are wildland firefighting trucks and need bigger tanks but less hose. Classes 5, 6, and 7 are medium and light duty brush trucks. Lots of west-coast departments use straight stick tillers because 1: Tillers are longer, so they may not fit in stations built on small plots of land; on the west coast this is less of an issue. Tillers also have more storage compartment space. Straight ladders are also easier to maneuver between power lines and other aerial obstructions, which are less likely to be buried than on the east coast

No your fire service would rather have people stay in the burning building and die rather than get the hell out. Read the description it clearly stated there were water pressure issues. Have you ever tried to fight a fire without a strong water stream and bear in mind the fire load in the structure further preventing effective entrance and locating the seat of the fire. There were several issues these firefighters had to overcome. If all you are going to do is criticize everything you think they did wrong like so many other self proclaimed armchair experts here, might I then suggest you not watch these videos. Do you honestly think snide comments are going to somehow endear you to the people who watch and enjoy these videos and especially to American viewers you limey bastard.
