It's almost scary to think how good Derek could have been when you watch this and realize how fucking good he was. Also makes you appreciate Dave Raun as well. Whoever the hell that is the video... dude, you're a fucking shredder. The two people who gave this a thumbs down must be ex-girlfriends who are butthurt they got ignored while dude was practicing drums EVERY night.
He's an Aussie drummer named Kye that's in a band called "local resident failure." Check them out, you'll like them. He's also a session drummer because of how awesome he is. Has recently become world famous for his Beatles, Nirvana and Foo Fighters 5 min tributes also.
Derrick was a incredibly talented guy. Not sure how much better he could have gotten. I think most are just happy for the time they did have with him. 🤘🤘
🤘🤘 for SB punk. I wish it was the 90s and i was on State street. We had some pretty good times back than. Cool to hear the progression of the boys. No one will ever play like DP but luckily we got to have the time we did and lots of his recordings to remember him. His speed and fills are never forgotten. Rock on Wagon. Time to get the bus moving again!! 🤘👍 C7 Clothing for life !!
Dude..... you nailed Derrick. That was incredible. Derrick would have watched you and told you you were awesome. He wasn't vain and he was stokked when others played his stuff. Humble almost. You kicked the shit out of that.
The seamless cuts of the songs alone is incredible, but the drumming is just amazing. With all the tempo changes and short cuts of each song. VERY impressive.
Anyone who is willing to play Lagwagon this strangely song after song that quick, song after song. I loved his NOFX video, but this is Lagwagon one of the most musically proficient punk rock bands ever.... This REALLY BLEW my mind. Not to mention since Tony passed, Joey is the best songwriter on Fat now...
the first time I saw Kye Smith I quit playing drums. I realize that I can never achieve his level of efficiency. this to this day is still true. but what I realized after the fact was I enjoy it just as much as he does. I'll never get close to his level. but I enjoy it too much to give it up. and he is a great news inspiration in Mentor. thank you Kye Smith for being Beyond badass
I'd love to hear - and see - a complete song from Lagwagon played by you; preferably something from Duh. You got Plourde's style spot on! R.I.P. David Plourde
This is amazing. Not only is it difficult to learn all of these drum parts in the first place, but memorizing the different tempos and being perfect on all transitions between those tempos is just mind blowing! Great job man!
Watched this a ton of times and it never gets old. PLEASE do a play-through of your drumming on Wide Awake for Bad Astronaut, you did Derrick proud with that one 👍
I enjoyed this a lot. Super tight, pretty much all my favourite Lagwagon songs, and keeps cutting to the next song just before you expect it to. 10/10 would listen again. Best Lagwagon medley ever?
There were two tectonic shifts in Lagwagon over the course of their existence. One was the sound of the drums as Raun took Derrick's place. The other was the change in Joey's songwriting after Derrick died. Resolve is a eulogy and an exorcism, a natural consequence of events. A part of me feels bad deriving so much enjoyment from an album representing something so painful for the artist, but I imagine the artist would wish for his listeners to enjoy it. After all, it is still a work of art put out to be enjoyed. I'd say that after Obsolete Absolute and May 16, Sad Astronaut is my next most favorite Lagwagon song. The starkness and morbidity of the song is a significant part of it. They lend the song a degree of honesty and intimacy that just doesn't happen often. I suspect that a man is no more honest than when he speaks plainly of death. Pool Shark by Sublime, Aw Yeah? by Tech N9ne, Dollar Days by David Bowie. It's in that league. But then they put out Hang, my all-time favorite punk album. A loose concept album tying the human condition into a series of plagues with an arc-bounding word. The coda, the plague of "bodies," is the same warning that man has refused to heed for centuries. I could talk about Hang forever. I don't believe the Joey Cape that put out Let's Talk About Feelings would have grown up into the Joey Cape that put out Hang without first being the Joey Cape that put out Resolve.
This is hands down THE best drum video I've ever seen, of any drum videos EVER! Absolutely amazing! And I found it on international Lagwagon day! (May 16th of course)
I just found these videos. All the skate punk I listed to when I was a kid and even now is here. So sick dude! Looking forward to a nofx one. I'm sure it's here somewhere.
1) The level of talent it takes to do this is just incredible. 2) His nofx cover is just as good. 3) The drum head on this snare is tight AF. It sounds like a conga played with sticks.
