It’s shocking that there are people out there who don’t understand what quiet quitting is. So ya’ll are ok working for free??? 😭

What ever it means - it gives clear distinction between who to cut and who to keep during layoffs. The longer the recession goes on the more people will be begging for work ANY WORK. Many company’s will cease to exist in the next 3-5 years.

Or when your co-workers doing THE EXACT SAME TASKS - or sometimes less - and to a lower standard, have somehow privately "negotiated" better pay than you get. And management don't come to you to offer the same thing or even tell you it was possible. In some cases this "negotiation" led to literally double what I was on. These people keep coming to me with basic questions because "you're so experienced" and "I don't know how to do that" but are somehow being paid more than me. Get rekt. Happened to me at a previous gig. I found out, quit (their reasoning for offering random people more money did NOT stack up or convince me) and was later told by a former colleague that they were now huffing and puffing because certain things were taking forever and not being done as well as I did them. You didn't want to pay for that, so screw you. You made your choice and I sure as anything made mine.

It is unfortunate and unacceptable that openly disrespectful behavior, scape goating, gaslighting etc., towards employees is tolerated and this is more pervasive with smaller companies. No one deserves abuse and I’m so sorry that you were put in a bad situation. Emotional abuse and bullying is traumatizing no matter what environment you are in, workplace, internet (trolling), home, school. Definitely a red flag when a ton of people are quitting. I too quit a startup and left equity on the table. It was too toxic. I happened to work for free upfront because I wanted to see them win. I walked away at a promising time, but it wasn't worth my soul. Fast forward, I am building my own company and being extremely thoughtful about people who come in. We won't have these problems because we are being mindful of how we hire but centering the beginning around values. It's hard to change culture later; it starts at the beginning...a no toxicity zone has to be declared.

I feel you on the first part. I wasn't being paid much money but I believed in what I later found out was an unstable product and horrible founders. 😩 Congrats on building your own company! I'm sorry this happened to you. I just got laid off from my startup the end of October. I'm in the same boat where I don't want to work at another startup only to get laid off again rinse and repeat and employers look down on you if you have resume gaps, which is ridiculous but the reality right now. I think I'm going to focus on less volatile startups (Series A) and avoid pre-seed if I can. The pre-seed ones are where I've worked and experienced layoffs because their funding is so unpredictable.

I also had a deep trauma from my first layoff, where I used to also work in a small company with 7 people. I'm a junior fullstack dev and had an entire project to complete within 3 months which I did not manage to complete within the time frame, therefore I was let go. I was the only person working on this huge project, and put all my effort in it, tried to show it by working overtime and not asking pay for it to show my determination to complete that project. In my opinion they should've hired a senior dev for this kind of work, but during the layoff meeting they even blamed it on me, and did not even apologize for it. Now I'm at another company, still traumatized and scared that this will happen again, but I have changed my attitude and not prioritizing work over other aspects of life, since in corporate culture you are 100 % replaceable.

The thing is imo there needs to be this insane personal drive in the tech world. To just absorb as many skills as possible, and grow grow grow. When it is all in reality really not that worthy of being passionate about. This is why, I find it helps to just think of all this as training my own brain... the only thing is we need to keep the stress down. In tech, you have to just pile work on yourself. The only way to somewhat win is to stay unaffected by the outcome, and to leverage your experience for promotions and changing jobs... just more of the same lifestyle at a higher level. Higher levels have more of responsibility and less of the blame.

I love coding. I do Leetcode like playing a video game. However, the Software development environment is sooooo toxic. My first SE job was at a big Fortune 500. I applied for junior but had no idea why I was T3 and a month later I needed to deal with 24/7 on-call. I got laid off around March and now I am in school about AWS. I felt like we all had the same feeling right now. So, the only advice for all of us who getting layoff and feel lost is............... don't think too much. Do and think of things that you can control, such as how many Leetcode questions per day, and how many hours should study per day.......Life is hard but will get better

I really relate to this and it takes a lot of bravery to open up about a toxic work environment. I'm in a similar situation in a smaller medium sized tech company and my leadership and management doesn't care about me or my career growth. I'm basically just a ticketer and do calls nonstop getting paid below the market standard for my position. No one else in my position gets called out for checking their phones or "hanging out", but apparently since I'm the new guy, I get scolded and lectured like a high school student. Also I forgot to mention, that there's no new hire training and I have to setup meetings and make requests to learn about certain topics. It's my first tech job, since I recently transitioned into this field and I'm self-learning to become a software engineer. Every day is a battle, but just getting my experience so I can bounce ASAP. Great video Savannah! :)

I am in the HR Talent Acquistion side and very curious what company you worked for; I know you are not able disclose it. My tip is stay away from these publicly traded companies and stick with non-for-profit companies, well known health, academic or any other industry non-for-profit companies with good reputations. In my 10+ year career, I worked for many for profit companies/publicly traded companies in healthcare, education ect, and their always laying people off, cutting cost and restructuring all the time. I was laid off to during the pandemic by a for profit institution and never looked back. I have to admit I do feel semi secure as I am in the healthcare sector. However, always keep your eye out and always be looking. And try to do something on the side as you build your retirement with the main company that offers retirement plans.

What happened to you is unfortunate, my very first work experience was horrible too , I was fresh out from the school , an during those 3 months probation period , I had a taste of everything an employer should never do ( gaslight, sexual harassment, bullying, the full package..) but like you I put on my big girl pants stick to my guns and finish it. It was clear I wasn't going to stay and they didn't wanted me since I didn't play along , but I ended my contract without prejudice and kept my right to unemployment insurances . So kudos to you for that :). What I would had , is you are expendable , we all are , try to change your angle . Nothing last forever so do not be afraid of change , yes the market is volatile but you need to build confidence in your skills, knowing your super power is the one thing that will get you any job . Probably a sensible thing to do is to find new employment as soon as possible and take the path of least resistance (ie. leverage your current strengths rather than explore new things). Once you have re-acquired stability, you may then focus on clarifying your purpose and working towards long term goals. It also goes without saying to keep expenses low and to save and invest money when things are good. Apparently the average business cycle in America is 5.5 years. So you should plan accordingly.

@@andyhughes1776 I agree. But each person must continue fighting and do what is necessary to improve their situation (preferably with probity). I have also just got laid off (last day is tomorrow (2023-09-29)). Even after 4 weeks notice I still have not landed 1 interview. The job market is brutal. There are currently many highly qualified and competent people vying for few positions. But remember that tech can be very cyclical. When times are good, they can be very good. Nobody was complaining when they were making bank during boom times. This highlights the need to plan one's finances very carefully to weather prolonged storms. My suggestion is to leverage one's strengths and find the path of least resistance. Consider progressively lowering one's standards if necessary - work as a waiter, cleaner or kitchen hand if it comes to that (but make sure to omit those details from the CV on job applications). Move back in with parents, bunk with friends etc. If you can afford it, then use the time to upskill. Get certifications. Assess a strategy that gives the most ROI within the constraints of your specific situation. I plan on learning Python and working towards getting an AWS certification and then if time permits a RHEL certification. I have gone through 3 of these cycles. I have quit, I have been made redundant, I have monkey-branched, and now I have been laid off due to market conditions. Things will turn around eventually. It could take 1 or 2 years (who knows). You have working arms and legs, a functioning brain, no mental illness. That is a lot already.

Thank you for asking!! I've listed the answers below. ✨🤞 > My pay: $71k CAD and a $2k CAD signing bonus - It was a startup in SF but I was working remotely in Toronto, Canada! The pay and cost of living is substantially lower here. > Stock options: I was given 500 shares of the company - this was worthless because each share was worth 50cents each and they were a sh*t company. They were most likely going NO WHERE in terms of growth and scaling. > Vesting period: I think it was 3-4 years? I don't remember. I didn't plan on staying there long so i blocked it out my mind! haha > Misc. company stats: 4 years old, $2m USD in funding, $1m USD in revenue, customer churn was high by the time i left because they were caught lying to stakeholders, they were a seed startup but on the brinks of series A (they prob won't get there) > Advice: If you're trying to quiet quit at a start-up, look for a job ASAP! I was ok with being let go because I was financially stable with my savings and living off my unemployment insurance until I found another opportunity. Also, a person only gets unemployment insurance if they were let go! I hope this helps. Good luck. You got this.💜😊🤞

Savannah, Have you ever had trouble finding a new job after either being laid off or unfairly bein fired from your last job. Or if you were forced into having to quit your job because the work environment or manager was toxic. Did you tell the new job at your interview the truth or was it best to just lie to them and tell them you are still employed at your last job. Most companies don't really always check references or with your past employer anyway since references are just a formality when applying force new job. I have always used friends and family members with a different last name as references or a former co-worker at a previous job since they actually worked with me before. Does anyone have any experience in this situation since it may be best to just lie a little rather than lose the new job opportunity because you were honest. Thanks.

Hi! Both of the times I got laid off, I've never had trouble finding a new job opportunity in a short amount of time. For me, it depends on how long I've been at the company. I tell them that they had budget cuts and since I was the newest employee, they let me go. It's actually been a common theme for the past few years due to the pandemic and the tech layoffs. Sometimes I tell them that I left the company because i have witnessed on several occasions that it didn't align w my values, morals, and ethics. In some ways, it is true. I hope that info helps!! @@TechSav18 Yes, This information does help a little and the pandemic has changed some things with jobs and the economy. I don't work in the tech career field and don't have a college degree but I have worked with people that do have college degrees and they are either forced into taking a low paying job in my area or if they want a higher paying job then they have to go either out of state or work far away from home in the big cities and that is not always an option for them since they don't have the money to do that. In some other career fields, if you go outside of your scope of practice, you could possibly loose your license which could effect your livelihood and some of the employers know it and will try you (toxic). A nepotism type environment is usually not a good one either. Based on the definition of quiet quitting though, it seems like you may also have a potential lawsuit (if you had decided that you wanted or needed your job) if you wanted to pursue a lawsuit. Especially, if it was going to be very difficult trying to get a new one in that career field. Not doing more work than what you were hired for is not grounds for termination... Just saying.

Meaning there’s no option to move back in with Mommy and Daddy, even if they suggested it. The idea of moving back home as an adult was looked down upon in the 00s. What was the MO of this startup? Did they try to scale up organically as they prudently built their product? Or did they try to take out lots of loans, take investor money, etc. so they could scale up their product just enough so they could be acquired? If it's the second, then that's why your job was so unstable. Because the interest rates were so low, investors were incentivized to throw money at millions of startups in the hopes that one would be the next Facebook. @@TechSav18 Raytheon in Tucson Arizona. Maybe L3-Harris in Salt Lake City UT. I know for a fact that Raytheon is short staffed. These are two I know personally. The rest you'll just have to try and apply. Most of these have offices, labs, plants, etc. throughout the country too. I'm not sure what your skill sets are, but these lean heavily into the tech/engineering field. Hopefully, you can leverage whatever skills you have towards these types of companies if you're interested. Good luck.

Perhaps, you should consider looking for a more stable company. I know that municipal authorities suchnas cities, towns, and counties are hiring employees. You "MAY " want to continue looking at State Authorities as well. As far as I know, these particular entities have pretty good retirement benefits. My Father and Mother worked and retired with Dallas County and ended up having a nice retirement. Another place that you " MAY" want to consider looking into is that of school districts. If you have a back growth Technology, perhaps you can teach something related with Math, Science, and/or Computers I also know that The Defense Sector is hiring with a the situation going with The Middle East. I have been "FIRED" LAID OFF, and FURLOUGHED. It can be EXTREMELY EXTREMELY EXTREMELY UPSETTING AND DISAPPOINTING; BUT, NEVER EVER BE DISHEARTENED AND/OR DISCOURAGED!!! NEVER!!!!

Exploring opportunities in municipal authorities, school districts, and the Defense Sector is a great idea, and I'll definitely consider those options. Your personal experience with Dallas County is inspiring, and it's reassuring to hear stories of successful retirements. Your words about resilience in the face of career challenges are incredibly motivating. I'll keep pushing forward and exploring new possibilities. Thanks for sharing your experiences and providing such positive encouragement. 💜😊✨

ne thing you will find is that there i always internal company politics everywhere if there are more than 2 people working. In bigger companies you do not notice them for say a year or more but it is always there. People create drama. It is just how it is. Even if you started your own business and had a few employees, there is drama. Trust me. The way to deal with it, is never to take drama personally. Remember, it is a job. Also in a small company specially a startup, job titles and responsibilities are always evolving. It is normal. Companies do not value HR and people like that in layoff situations because they are costly and do not actually produce direct sales or bottom line. Harsh but true. Your company was under pressure because economy is taking a downturn and the software they sell is not something companies absolutely need to run and can delay buying till economy is better. When such a company gets put under pressure, it only has one product and is in a vertical niche, it will be difficult to manage for the best of managers.

Hi! Thank you for sharing this! I completely agree that sometimes companies are under a lot of pressure but there is a right way to treat people and I believe my company didn't handle the situation well (that's a story for another time haha). They were in the EX space which unfortunately is a dying field due to budget cuts so it makes sense. 🥲

Quiet quitting - don't you think this is why led you to being layoffs? Unless the reason is redundancy, other reasons are due to individual i would say.
@TechSav18
@TechSav18 11 месяцев назад
Quiet quitting is doing the amount of work and responsibilities that you sign on to do. Anything more (working over time without pay, taking on more responsibilities without a salary increase) would be as if the company is stealing from you. If a company is letting me go for doing what I signed on to do, is that ethical? Would you work an extra 20 hours at your job for free?
