Lake Elsinore hits record-breaking water levels after Southern California storms

After several record-breaking rainstorms hit Southern California, water levels at Lake Elsinore have surged, prompting flooding concerns. This marks the first time in 25 years that water levels have been this high. Near the shoreline, what was once a walkable area has disappeared, with a sign and a bench fully submerged underwater.
David Bertoldo, a Lake Elsinore resident, visits the lake several times a week and has noticed the dramatic changes. “It’s changed all the fishing spots, so everyone has to go find their new fishing spots,” Bertoldo said.
Many of the launch points for boats and watercraft are submerged and walkways, along with a public beach area, are now inaccessible.
KTLA's Shelby Nelson reports on Feb. 28, 2024.

While there could be some complaints about the lake, when we lived there for 4 years (2015-2019) that lake saved alot of homes that might of been burnt to the ground. I still remember all the water dropping helicopters flying over, picking up water and then heading to the local hills. It's definitely a diamond in the rough!

As far as I'm concerned, when city officials across the state vote to kill desalination plants up our coastline, our water issues must not be too dire. If we were ever in an actual water emergency, desalination plants are incredibly cost effective. There are already some in operation. I think every coastal city should have at least 1.

Hopefully they are harvesting the water to the soil. The ground has been dry, impermeable and lifeless wherever it is bare. Water takes time to infiltrate sun-baked soil. Shunting it off to the sea is a mistake, they need frequently placed, biologically active swales and raingardens to appropriately absorb water to the topsoil.
