Western Australia's wheatbelt region is littered with salt lakes and the Lake King salt lake is one of them. You'll find this salt lake within the Lake King Nature Reserve. Lake King salt lake crosses the Newdegate - Ravensthorpe road about 10kms west of the townsite of Lake King. In fact as you approach the township of Lake King from the west you will be crossing a bit of history. Currently, the 10 kms stretch of road that crosses the salt lake that is Lake King, is actully the longest stretch of road in Western Australia that's built across a salt lake.
As with much of Western Australia, during spring and after good rains, the salt lakes come alive with wildflowers that thrive on the banks of Lake King. Not to mention what looks like diamonds sparkling in the wild as the sun glints off the salt. Seeing Lake King salt lake at sunset is also a lovely sight, best done at this time of day when travelling east.
Lake King salt lake like most salt lakes rely on good rainfall to become a "lake" otherwise they remain fragile wetlands and although they look firm, the surface can be broken very easily so please don't drive on them. Full of water or dry Lake King salt lake offers spectacular views as you continue on your journey.
Lake King salt lake is on traditional lands of the Noongar Ballardong people.
