Lived in Shelbyville my entire life and spent countless hours on lake Shelbyville. Moved to FL in 2020. Man I miss living in Shelbyville and spending time on the lake.
I'm sure glad Casey said to make a fishing show and you followed that voice inside that said Just Do It. I have a group going to Shelbyville April 25-27, primarily for crappie, last year went same time and each boat averaged close to 150 crappie a day, most CPR. Staying down near Lithia Springs at Gregory's Lodge and general store. Good time if anyone is looking for a catching excursion. Camping near by as well.
I would love it if I could have someone look at lake shelbyville and map out spots I can find some white bass. New to fishing and want to LOAD up on White bass. I love frying them up
Please share with us some facts, or formulate an opinion, in regards to the largemouth and smallmouth bass population for Lake Shelbyville. I fish there a several times throughout the year, and struggle to catch many adult largemouth in May or June, and I have yet to catch a smallmouth. But, I've heard some anglers talk about catching 18" smallmouth, which must be immediately returned to the lake (catch & release only). Enjoyed your post!! Thanks
Based on your more recent experience on Shelbyville, do you feel the IFish Illinois /DNR summary of the status of the fish species is fairly accurate? Obviously the crappies continue to be the marquis fish here but it appears the largemouth bass population has taken a hit. Walleyes, sauger and white bass seem to remain pretty good. Do the walleyes and sauger get much fishing pressure there? It seems that part of the state is more bass/crappie/catfish oriented. I assume it is a better walleye lake than Clinton? Nice summary and enjoyed the stories.
Hi Brett! The IL DNR summaries are a bit vague at times. The sauger fishing has been very good and consistent for the past (10) years. I think the sauger population is slightly better then the walleye population. And yes, the walleye population is MUCH better at Shelbyville then Clinton. Limits at Shelbyville are not uncommon, especially from mid May til the end of June. They bought back the Muskie stockings, but I doubt it will develop into a catchable population. They also just started stocking pure striped bass. I doubt we'll see many bigger ones caught, due to low survival rate. But it is one of the best multispecies lakes I know of.
No. When I researched it many years ago I thought it was a private lake then..? Looks like you can access the lake with a 3 day or yearly permit. Always looking for new water to check out, so YES, It's on my list for this year!
