I just don't like the 1000 footers. I miss the classic LAKER style, pilot house on the bow, crew quarters in the stern. Hatches in the middle. Classic LAKER style.
Seems like an awful rough day to be out pleasure boating ... you'd think if the guy can afford a yacht that sized he could hold out a few days ... one-percenters, always pushy ...
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but as big as these 1000 ft ers are, I don't think they really designed for rough weather. I think the strategy now after the Fitz sinking is to avoid severe weather and not test the Lakes. Those hulls are more like motorized barges, maximized for cargo capacity and made for relatively calm water, and they're not designed to take a pounding sea like an ocean-going ship. It would be fascinating to know what the data is on 1000 ft ers that have weathered the worst storms on the Lakes since the Fitz and how they held up, how they handled, and what their captains thought, etc.
You bring up some valid points. Most of the time when the weather is like this, they hunker down behind some of the Islands a bit N.E of Duluth and wait out the storms.
I'm going to put out the idea that the lake isn't actually "angry" but just slightly annoyed. If the lake was "angry" she would crush that carrier like a beer can.
Ahhh I remember the night I was cast off my 1000’er. It was 20 below and the waves were wild they were ehhhh...all I had on was my lucky Bermuda shorts and a bottle of rye in my hand. I went outside to lite my spleef when suddenly a rouge wave hit her like a sledgehammer. It three me into the abyss. Luckily I swam to Port Huron and found a cheap motel. The next morning I had a Great Lakes lager and a fish omelette and thumbed I ride to Alpena where I bought a new eye patch and refitted my peg leg. I then made my way over to the titanic fish and chip pub and picked the bar maid Mildred.
@@PaulScinocca My mom's family is from Cloquet. My grandfather was a certified boilermaker and worked on ships at the Duluth harbor during WWII. He also was a railroad man, as was his father. Both worked for the D&NE railroad, my great grandfather for over 25 years. I got to enjoy the experience of riding in the cab of steam locomotive #28 on a working run back in the early 1960's before my grandfather passed away. My mom worked for the former Minnesota Power and Light office in Duluth for several years before she met and married my dad. I had relatives who worked in the Calumet iron ore mine back in the day. Duluth and points north have been like a second home for my 64 years. MSP not so much. By chance would you know the name Frank A. King? He was with the DM&IR for over forty years and wrote several books on railroads in that part of the state. He had a couple children. I don't know if they stayed in the area or moved.
Still don't think that's the best name. Not to jinx the crew or ship or anything, but they should never have named a ship something that will sound _that_ ironic if it runs into trouble...
Since it's running with a 30 ft draught (bottom of ship 30' below the water line), I would guess the waves would have to be at least 15' before they feel anything.
@@robertk6640 they really only draw 28 feet when loaded, mainly due to the St Marys river which they use along with the locks to get to the lower lakes.
