Thanks for making clear that the sensor itself will report the same output level as Stoich no matter the fuel. Few commentators nor WB sensor sellers make that clear and that leads to confusion about AFR calculated by the gauge head unit and its indirect relationship to tuning math. Lambda and 1/Lambda (or Phi) makes table correction super simple. Case in point that using AFR is routinely misleading, is that most gas these days is E10 (and getting worse, thanks EPA renewable fuels mandate) and therefore more like 14.1:1 at stoich. But your will still get 14.7 on your good ol AFR calculating gauge when your fuel system has trimmed up the mix to E10's stoich.

Hi, thanks a lot for the clear and quick explanation. I understand lambda is a good way to measure a rich/lean condition regardless the fuel or vehicle. Just one quick question though, I took my car for smog inspection today and the result was 1.0, 1.15 lambda (low, high rpm), so what do you recommend should be adjusted/changed in order to pass the test? Other values were: CO + CO2% 15.0, 12.12 CO2% 14.5, 11.6 NOx ppm 5.0, 56.0 HC 67.0, 78.0 Thanks again.

One thing to add to the Stoichiometric Values, 14.7:1 is for normal gas without ethanol, nearly all pumps put up to 10% so Stoich for most fuels is actually 14 to 14.1

Great video Jay. My question is, will the stock o2 sensors give you a good Lambda reading. I've added octane booster and I have an i3 tuner installed. Currently the 91 octane tune. My WOT fuel is 1%, 2%, 3% lean on the 3 rpm settings. 1 to 3k My Lambda reading is .996. The other 2 are between .77 to .79 at 6250 rpm. Thanks!

I’m looking into getting a wide and sensor, ive gotten exhaust and header upgrades and my question is will my ecu adjust to the sensor vs the stock narrowband sensor or will it throw a check light. Performance wise will the computer also adapter better fueling. Can I used a wideband sensor with a narrowband harness or that will have to be piggy backed?

Hi, nice tips buddy, we wish to optimise IC cars for Natural gas fuel and meet emission tests, should we use a wideband AFR for setting up the gas map, how to change the stoic ratio of 17:1 (for CNG ) in the set up - or do you advice working on Lambda only ? thanks

I don't know how many people I've seen on E85 using a wideband on a pump gas scale wondering why it's laggy consumes gobs of fuel and you can see black coming out the exhaust. I literally stopped trying to explain it to people.

Jay maybe you can clarify, I understand but I want to be absolutely positive. I have a AEM Gail safe on my car now. Just switch to E85. I was surprised to the 14.7 ratio as well. So I still need to target the gasoline AFR? Correct? Also when I first turn the key on but not start the car the sensor reads 14.7 for a few seconds but if I leave the key on but don’t start the car it will drift up to 18. Like when I’m play on the laptop with the key power on. Does this mean I’m due for a sensor?

Jay, this is one of the best explanations out there for EUGO gauge reading! But if I may, can you confirm @1:25 the stoich ratio you have for E10 pump gasoline? Because I believe E10 is 14.1:1, due to the up-to-10% ethanol component of the fuel. Straight gasoline (E0) stoich should be 14.7:1. Other than that, this video rocks. Keep up the good work!
@zacharymorris9917
@zacharymorris9917 Год назад
You're wasting your time asking someone who has no clue. You're also asking the wrong question. Stoich for E10 is 14.08xxx. 14.1 is more than close enough to call it correct. That's irrelevant because a "wideband" sensor will still display 14.7 at stoich on E10. Do yourself a favor and stop working in AFR. Lambda is correct for ALL FUELS. AFR is only correct for one single solitary fuel, something that's virtually non-existent today. Ethanol content varies wildly between full ups.

Might be an dump question but im having an issue with my lambda reading My car would stay at 14.0 AFR at WOT while before it would go up to 12-13 AFR at WOT. I figured my injectors were dirty due to e85 i got them cleaned and went back to normal. Yesterday i went back on 91 octane (under a 91 calibration) and my AFR went back to 14 AFR at WOT. At this point im thinking the 02 sensor is bad Im running hondata flashpro by the way

I’ve replace a o2 sensor because of the code but the light comes on again. During warm up the voltage is 1.7. The non affected bank reads o.2 before the replacement the voltage was 2.9. Can an exhaust leak cause these high readings or is that pretty much a damaged ecu. Customer said it came on around the same time his car was rear ended.

I am wanting a fuel air gauge for my 1 cylinder 5000 watt power generator so I can run lean and get the most power lower my gasoline cost.. Also considering going to Natural gas. You are more expert about this so let me know your suggestions. Might consider an Exhaust engine temperature gauge to avoid burning an engine. This generally loads nicely and kicks up when something big loads the circuit. Generally constant load.

So if I add a gallon of e85 to a tank of 93, am I still targeting 14.7 low and 12.5 high load?

I have a 1970 BMW 2002 with two Solex 40 PHH carbs. At idle and low speeds I see 11-12 AFR but on the highway going up grades it leans out, over 17. Should I go to larger main jets?

Really informative vlog, but...? These days you can no longer get 95 actane gas in Norway, it changed over to E-85... Since the stoich then changes as you say from 14.7:1 to 9.7:1, how on earth can I change the value of the air/fuel ratio gauge to track 9.7:1 so I get the correct reading between rich and lean? Also one more thing... Is it posible to hook up an air to fuel ratio gauge to the existing lambda sensor insted af what a lot of others do, cutting, welding, installing an second sensor just for the gauge?? Thanks in advance!

So if I wanna tune my turbo bike and I'll be using different fuels I should put it on lambda and it will be the same afr from 93 Oct to say C16?
@SeanFarley25

I have a 450+ whp caliber srt4. Full e85 with all supporting mods. I tune myself along with other caliber srt4s. I'm kinda confused here.. With hp tuners and dodge, I set the lambda, but what would I set the wot ve tables to for example? Say if I'm only wanting to work with lambda? Currently I just set the lambda table to all the same values and adjust the ve tables accordingly

How would you determine target afr or lamda for a given engine at wot? I hear all the time leaner is meaner. Is there any truth to this?
@martinbernath
@martinbernath 5 лет назад
Great video. One more question. Does the sensor know when its heated up to its operating temperature? Im asking this because i would like to install it in a different location than recommended, closer to the head of the engine. That means it will naturally by the heat of the exhaust gas, warm up quicker than usual. Can the sensor overheat or will it know when to stop the heater itself?

I'm super late to this party. Say I want to go super nerdy and interpret the volt output values - is that possible? Was wondering if I need a gauge at all or just a spicy Bosch sensor and a voltmeter?
@steveforbin911
@steveforbin911 6 лет назад
You mentioned a 14.7 to 1 ratio for gasoline is that by weight or volume ? What if I am running a nitro mix? Does changing the timing change much? Does predetination of lower grades show up on the fuel air ratio? If you use a Butane Oxygen mix will the gauge work and give valid rich lean numbers? Lambda

Hello, if my O2 sensor output varies from 0.1volts to 0.9 volts for about two times per second, meaning from lean to rich , so the AFR is never stoichiometric ,except a fraction of a second on transition, how can i judge the AFR and the engine management is just fine or wrong? Also, what voltage would be for 14.74-”stoich” ? And, this type of sensor is narrow band or a wide band? Thank you !
