They keep referencing this 1985 Countach design as being 30 years old but the fact is this design was first unveiled in 1971, so that makes this design over 45 years old! And still the most amazing looking car ever!

" it does not drive itself. You need to drive it" -- that should be a verse in the holy book of automobiles. Thank you guys for creating a masterpiece of a video. I wish owners of old supercars would come out of hiding and give you guys their cars to review. New kids on the block need to learn about old school supercars and how its all about mechanical feel and emotional driving. New cars just don't cut it !!

I'm very old and own a modded 87 Testarossa. It does not drive itself. No power seats. No power steering. No ABS. No paddle shifter. No computers. No turbos. Headers. No cats. And a variable flap muffler set up that I pretty much leave open. The sound of that flat 12 at 7500 rpm is amazing.

Jay Leno said it was his every day car for 10 years & he loved it. He said the 1st time driving it is like driving a go cart as a child for the very 1st time. At 1st u don't understand how the steering & accelerating work & it's awkward. But once u figure out how its supposed to be driven then u just can't wait to drive it again. He said the Countach is exactly that. Now you're a big kid in this incredibly powerful machine & at 1st you're like "how the hell can anyone drive this?" - but like that fast go cart, once u gain confidence in how the accelerator, shifter & steering work, he said u become like the kid in the go-cart again who finally learns how it drives & how to take those turns at higher speeds & accelerate through it, then u never want to turn the thing off & get out.

STILL the finest design to ever come in any form. Driving be DAMNED, this is a car for the ages. I had the pleasure of being a passenger in the late 80's and i can tell you there is NO greater thrill than getting out at your destination and swinging that door open and stepping out while everyone gawks like fools.

Well, we are comparing a mid-80's car to 2016's standards. The new Mustang GT is now faster than this Super Car. But the aesthetic of this Lambo is still unequaled. Still so exotic.

I'm a Ferrari man, but the Lamborghini Countach is the undeniable king of exotica. I have it on good authority that it was designed and engineered by aliens. NOTHING will ever touch it ever again. I fell in love with this car when I first saw it in a magazine. Then we all saw it in Cannonball Run movie. And now 4o years on it still looks like it came from Venus. It sure stood the test of time and no other car has nearly the same impact when it rolls past the eyes of unsuspecting motorists or people on the streets.

The comment in this video that is in nearly every video about the Countach that holds absolutely true is that it's the car that all of us that grew up in the 80's had on our wall. I had a Trapper Keeper with one on it that i carried in school. If I was at the toy store and mom or dad would let me grab a Hot Wheels or something like that it was ALWAYS the Countach that I went home with. I still have several Countach Micro Machines that i've had since those days and they're proudly displayed on a little shelf with a few other things from that time (Yes even the black one with the opening doors). It was the fastest thing we could think of. It was in all the movies. It will always be the first car I think of when I think of exotic supercars.

UGH! The jealousy is deep, and it is real! The supercar to end all supercars. Super/Hyper cars now are all about mechanical performance. This car was about the pure debauchery that something like it even exists. It caught everyone off guard when it was released and had everyone scrambling to develop and answer. They don't make 'em quite like this anymore.

I owned a 1988.5 QV for more than a decade. Black on Black with gold wheels... total poster car... fuel injection, the type of car that could pass anything but a gas station. At 6'1" it was ok to drive. non-assisted steering, pedal and brake needed power from my legs. Boring to drive until you got to triple digits... then it became interesting, at 140 mph it woke up! I had the huge wing so top speed was limited to about 160 mph due to drag... but it was a solid car. Nothing ever broke, no problems what so ever... lovely car .... biggest problem was getting in back from my mechanic... eventually sold it to get it back!

I've had a 500S. It is worth every penny and you will be very happy indeed. Long geared, nearly 70 in first, lots of noise from gears and road, the engine is inches away. 5'10 is a perfect hight. ..let it warm up and then it's boom a thrill. People used to ask me ..'how fast mister'....I used to say 'I'll join in at 150mph...then change up a gear..boom 😆. You go 100 and then all the noises change from machenical to aircraft...it was meant to go 100s miles across continents. Not fast in these days but......the noise and look WILL make you fall in love. Sell everything and get one.

It's great fun to listen to guys around my age reminisce about the Countach. We all had the poster (of course you remember the Alpine stereo ones). And we all thought a rocket ship had been grafted onto a race car. Todd nailed it when he said we all instantly thought to ourselves "That's the fastest car I've ever seen." But time and truth have dispelled the fantasy. The Countach is a brilliant piece of theater, a triumph of style. The body looks space-age, but isn't actually aerodynamic. In contrast to the body, the interior is plain, spare and dull. The engine is a nothing-to-sneeze-at 400 hp, but it's big power from a simpler era. And that 400 hp is propelling 3,000 lbs. Again, space-age looks, New Wave era materials. But you guys found some magic in the drive, and that's cool. Perhaps it was the long-awaited realization of a dream, like a Baby Boomer strumming Jimi Page's guitar. Or maybe there really is something to the quirkiness of bygone exotics. We humans have an affection for the little eccentricities. Maybe the fact that you have to look out the open driver's side door to see anything when backing the Countach up makes the experience a bit more special. Camrys and Accords are renowned for sweating the details and ironing out the quirks. And Camrys and Accords are boring. Nobody names their Camry...maybe until it's got 200,000 miles, is painted primer black and becomes your first ride in high school. I've gotten carried away. That's probably the right reaction when discussing the Countach. You guys nailed the review. I felt myself in that seat. Keep up the great work. I watch/read a lot of reviews. You guys do your own thing and stand with the best (yes, I'm looking at you Top Gear, Chris Harris, Jay Leno, et al). Thanks. P.S. Todd, I love how mentions of the fairer sex (Supermodels, etc.) always manage to slip into your reviews. I like your priorities.

I too had a framed poster of a fire-engine red Lambo Countach hanging on my wall as a kid. To me, this car was the ultimate representation of speed, power and style. I understood this car gets piss-poor gas mileage, but hey, if you can drop a quarter million for this car (which is what I recall it went for at the time), then affording gas is the least of your problems! I even have a few of those robot Transformer toys from the 80's that transform into this very same car. Everyone else I knew at the time was drooling over the Ferrari Testarossa, but for me, the Lambo was the gold standard of sports cars.

I had 2 cars an my wall in 1988, being 18 y/o: a black Countach Anniversary (photographed almost in birds eye view) and a black Porsche 930 Turbo based Gemballa Avalanche. These cars were my dream cars these days! :D

In College in about 1976, a good friend had a Miura. It was a total 'chick magnet' except when there is two guys in a two seater there is no way to "seat 3". All the Corvette guys know what I'm talking about. There were fewer than 950 Lamborghini Miuras built TOTAL in the entire production run so it really is pretty special.

Great review guys! I fell in love with Lamborghini when I was about 5 or 6 years old after watching that black Countach play its games with the highway patrol in the first Cannonball Run film. - Been a huge fan of Lambos ever since.

Oh wow, this is the perfect dream car! This is the car that was on my walls, and I even would draw them. One time I drew one with it's doors open on the back of my jean jacket. The car in this video is exactly what I want. The only thing I would change is the engine and put a 5 liter or higher. But still the V-12, the wheels are the right color, the car as well as the interior. If I ever won the lottery, this would be the first thing I would buy. This Countach is for the ultimate enthusiast. Real mean can handle this car, not wimps. This is the ultimate driving machine, and I would do almost anything just to drive one once. And you are looking at a sports, muscle car guy.

What a FANTASTIC review of THE supercar, the one by which all others, before or since, are measured. You guys did an outstanding job of telling us what it's like to actually drive a dream. It's almost surreal just watching. And being somebody for whom the visceral experience of the senses is as important as how well the car moves down the road, I can appreciate what it must be like to drive. I could almost feel what that car was doing. I could overhear it as it spoke to you and the honest assessment of the car and it's abilities without the natural tendency to embellish such things on a car like that must have been tough. The fact that both of you still love the car, even though it's abilities fell far short of expectations, says as much about the both of you as it does about the car, and it emphasizes what the car was really about. It presents an image that is far different from the reality and you captured that aspect brilliantly. Way to go!

The Miura was the original supercar, in my opinion. I like to think of the Countach as a worthy follow-up to it, though. Definitely one of the most iconic car designs ever.

I had that same poster and this is the picture I think of, when I think of a countach. I can't think supercar without the countach, F40 and XJ220

The 86 countach down draft is the best of the bunch! That’s the version that had almost 500 hp and a 4.5 second 0-60 time.

I have always promised myself that if I were to ever win the lottery of sufficient amount to be able to afford whatever car I wanted that a red countach would be the first buy to hit my garage. It always has been and always will be. While these days a second hand Gallardo isn't totally out of the realm of financial possibility I just don't make enough to bankroll a countach. *sigh* Oh as an aside I also have the hot wheels, all of the micro machines, a poster and at least 1 countach model kit from my youth. So yeah. Just like Paul and Todd I was that kid in the 80's. So this episode really resonates with me. I have to admit I'm envious of them being able to drive this icon.

interesting fact. the front wing option on the Countach cost the same amount as a Yugo. Given the choice I'd rather have the wing hanging on my wall than the Yugo in my garage.

I am a 80's kid, and yes I had a poster of one of these on my wall. I'm not sure if its the styling of super cars today, or if its just someone else's vision for this car, but I've always thought it was ugly and not at all sleek looking. Yes up close it has tons of curvature, but from 20ft away it looks like a box on domed wheels

Also had this very car's poster on my wall, except in white. It truly is an icon. I do wish that you guys did a quick pull all the way through first and then a change to second, just to hear its growl. Didn't have to be abusive, but would be nice to have heard it.
