It's just gas fumes being ignited by tire heat. The rear end is all opened up with no plastic or metal padding in between direct rich gas flow from the exhaust and the burning hot tires.

I noticed that since the Gallardo WRC video, its his focus face, he does it when he goes full send. You can notice when he really enjoys and visualizes his moves. I mean, we all do it when it comes to meticulous things, don't we.
