The video you are about to see captures the use of a lampara style round haul net being used for scientific survey work in Humboldt Bay, California. The biologists required one hundred Pacific Herring for study and the vessel operator essentially clipped the corner off of a thirty ton school of herring. The lampara net used in the film is as follows:
Wing length - 50 fathoms per wing
Fishing Depth - 8 fathoms
Wing Mesh Size - 4” stretch x #9 thread, 400 meshes deep
Bunt - 7/16” knotless webbing
Bunt Cork line length - 18 fathoms
Built by Cloudburst Fishing Company: cloudburstfishing.net/
The set yielded about 2 ½ tons and all fish except the 100 fish sample were released unharmed. This film courtesy of Kirsten Ramey, California Department of Fish and Wildlife - All rights reserved.
