You have to remember this was considered timeless for the mid 1960’s. It was quite a turbulent time fashion wise, transitioning from the almost Victorian-esque corsetry and petticoats of the 1950’s and the modern, streamlined silhouette of the late 60’s and onwards.

Interesting that Edith Head had no talent for clothes design, she bluffed her way into a studio job and learned what she needed to know a little at a time. She admits it all in her book.
@gbrown2984

Spot on.. I read that In an Article LA Times release on her years ago. Edith actually used her classmates artwork to get that lst job at the studio. @John Edwards Nuts. They weren't dated in 1964. The clothes, hair, and makeup were correct for a wealthy, sophisticated, middle-aged woman. 40+ year old women weren't expected to dress like teenage girls. What did you expect, Sonny and Cher? Flower power? 😂 Look up what Elizabeth Taylor wore in her personal life in 1964, for example. It would be a long time before middle aged women would be dressing like teenagers. The tv show "Friends" started that trend.

I'm going to disagree with the expert and get myself attacked but I think I can take it. Lana is very beautiful but this is 1965 and she is in her mid 40's. She is not fat but when you reach that age, weight shifts around your body. Your middle thickens a bit and your arms get larger. I don't think all the sleeveless outfits are flattering to her at all. She looked nice sleeveless when a great deal more of her chest was shown - it seemed to balance things out. As talented as Edith was, I don't think she complemented Lana's figure very much at all here.

Wendy Jones I have to disagree with you on one statement. I don’t think it’s true for all females @ mid 40’s weight shifts and our middle thickens nor arms get larger. @@marywhite2043 I suppose no "rule" is true for 100% of the people. Let's say it was true for Lana and most women. Even if you stay the same weight, it shifts to different places. I don't think Lana has an unattractive figure and I don't think she is overweight. She does not have the tiny, tight waist and thin arms she had when she was in her 20s. I think different styling would have helped her a great deal. I have to disagree with Miss. Head this time.

Sge has always been my favorite of all actresses of the time. Poised, sophisticated, charming and down right beautiful.

These outfits worn by the highly-talented Lana Turner were from the film 'By Love Possessed' released in the early 60's. Yes, this Oscar nominated actor could wear even a gunny-sack and do justice to it . I love her best in green which brings out the magic in her. For the swimsuit shots, I found her legs a tad too thin. Wish she had exercised to keep in shape. I can't recall Stephanie Powers in the same film, but she does look very sweet, including in the swim-wear shots. Turner's make-up was exquisite on which she relied heavily.

It's hard to believe that Lana Turner was only 43 or 44 here. Back then if you weren't the ingenue, you instantly looked middle aged. With different wardrobe, hair and makeup by totday's standards she could have easily passed for early 30s.

Lana Turner had the shoulders of a football player. I wouldn't have wanted Ms. Head's job making clothes for her.

Edith was better than any top designer ever lived. She designed her clothes for maximum impacts for a much much more refined vision.

Putting the clothes aside for a moment, the hair styles and the make up for these women wear so aging. Lana is 44 and although her face and figure are still great, she looks like a rich, well kept and well appointed 55 year old at least. Imagine, Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston are ten years older than she is now, think of how they look!

she also was a very heavy smoker, which didn't help her to look just 44.. smoking ages the skin rapidly.

@@Nunofurdambiznezwomen looked older back then. The hairstyles and clothes ages them but also they used to drink and smoke a lot back then and they also tanned a lot on the beach. Especially rich movie stars like Lana Turner who would’ve vacationed a lot and they used to think that tanned skin was glamorous and didn’t understand about skin cancers and so on. Their makeup also was very heavy. The chemicals used in the make up back then was toxic and full of unmentionable things. On top of that, they didn’t have filler, Botox or all the treatments we do now. All of this aged people ahead of time. You have to remember also that back then, women didn’t go to the gym the way they do now. Women now are extremely sporty and fit. All of these things are the reasons why stars looked older back then. Every single scene they’re in, they’re smoking or drinking martini’s and cocktails. It was seen as chic back then.

Lana is one of my favorites from the post-war era of Technicolor melodramas, where women were often the star and expected to be "suffering in mink."

Is that a cigarette in Lana Turner's hand? No wardrobe supervisor worth their salt would allow such a thing, no matter how big the star!!
