I moved with my family there in 1997 to practice dentistry and loved it because it reminded me of growing up in old Honolulu. I moved away in 2010 but still have great memories of the life and the friends I made while living there.
How beautiful! I love it. I can just tell it’s relaxing. Random but I didn’t catch it on the video maybe I missed it so they don’t have a mall just more like small stores? Do they have little thrift stores? I can only imagine how peaceful this is and how stress free they might be. (sorry if my questions might be dumb) i’m very curious.
No shopping mall on Lanai -- only a few stores around the village green, and shops in the fancy hotels, which have been seriously upgraded since I made this -- but still, no mall.
well you see LANA'I has changed!, you can't just park anywhere you want now. But it's still very quiet there, and the population is over 2,000 people already so Lana'i has changed a ton.
It was pronounced LAN- EYE when I lived there... I wonder if TAKKAS is still there, I used to play the pac-man game there all the time.... Or pine Isle market bought a cool speargun from there
+fstwrtr It is interesting that pronunciation of Hawaiian words has evolved in recent years, in some attempt at getting back to what might have been correct centuries ago. I think that most people still say LAN-EYE, which is very easy and pleasant to say, rather than the more politically correct LA-NAI-EE, just like we say HAWAIEE rather than HA-VAI-EE
I think "Taka's" was next to the then "Dis n Dat" store? If I remember correctly when I was a kid we used to go there for their ICEE and candies... they had old school games too
Tanagowas? (sp), Went to elementary school the in the 50's. Dad took us hunting, and all over Lanai. Wonder how many people have been in side the volocano tube where Lanai gets it's drinking water.
I was reading and this entire town of Lanai City and the whole island of Lanai is owned by a rich guy named Larry Ellison. He's the founder of tech giant Oracle. That's so capitalist. It seems like he doesn't bother them though. I wonder why he even bought it. He owns 97% of the island, according to Wikipedia. I'm going to read some articles on the New York Times and other websites. If anyone's interested, ask me and I'll tell you what I find out.
Shut the F up with your capitalist bullshit comments. That's what's made this country so great and why everybody wants to come here, Idiot. Good for Larry Ellison he filled a want and created thousands of jobs. You probably use Oracle's products without even knowing it.
@@13thbiosphere I was kind of vicious sorry about that however my point is true. People that knock capitalism sound like victims that can't get their act together
