Disclaimer- I am not a professional RU-vidr! This video was created to help others running into the same problem I ran into. This video should help those trying to install the Lance 6-way wiring harness in a truck without tapping into the factory OEM wiring system, potentially voiding a warranty. There are a lot of things I could and should have added to the video to make instructions more clear but I didn't so it is what it is. The video shows how to use the Lance 6-way harness, the E-Trailer Hopkins 41157 harness, two rolls of 8-gauge wiring, and some connectors to install a Lance truck camper plug that will run a 12 volt (3-way) refrigerator. The video is nowhere near perfect but hopefully sends viewers down the right path to complete their install project.

Great video. I got a dealer quote of over $600 to do this. I think I spent about $150 on everything (including crimping tools, fuse and shrink connectors) to DIY. Thanks for saving me some $$$.

I think you are the only person on RU-vid to describe this Lance camper plug issue. No one else I know has this information and I bought an old 1999 1010 camper before I knew what the deal was with the 8 gauge wiring. so, thanks dude!

I followed this excellent procedure and recommend it highly. My error was not realizing my TC battery disconnect switch was in/off. With that switch in proper position,on, all works as it should. Great video and also super responses to my silly questions.

I just purchased a 2022 RAM 3500, and I’m installing the HappiJac tie down kit, etc., and I’ll be wiring it exactly as you did in your video. Your video was truly excellent. Really well done. Thanks

Great video Sean, I did a "spin-off" of your version. I put BOTH the 7-way AND 6-pin in the bed of my truck. Instead of cutting the entire harness end off and capping some of the wires, what I did, was shave the 4 lights wires down (one the 7 way, yellow, green, brown, purple), then solder the 6 way light wires (red, green, yellow, brown) onto these shaved wires. of course i still ran the 8 gauge power wires to the batter with 40a fuse. I then taped this all up and mounted both the 6 and 7 pin female receivers into the bed. now i have 7 way power for goose neck and 6 pin power for my 2016 Lance 850. my truck is a 2022 RAM 3500. Great video, you certainly helped me a ton! Thank you.

great job. however you should run the 8 gauge 12V power from the Lance connector to a relay that only connects 12 V power from the truck battery when the truck is running

Lance campers have a built in battery isolator. When the truck alternator reaches 13.2v it will charge the camper batteries. When stopped, the battery isolator monitors the truck battery. When the truck battery reaches 12.8v then the isolator disconnects from the truck battery, thus ensuring it doesn't drain the truck battery.

@@T0DDS is this true? If so then I do not need to unplug my camper every time I stop for awhile, right?

Thanks for sharing this video! I followed it exactly and everything is working as it should. My only question would be should I have connected the 8gage to my Alternator rather than my battery? I find that if I run my fridge on DC power when traveling my battery will drop about 20%. It will recover once I change back to propane and have good solar. Or, is this a normal thing? 2021 Lance 825.
@seancampbell6845
@seancampbell6845 10 месяцев назад
Good question Greg. Short answer is, I’m not sure. Others have posted indicating there is a relay that prevents draining the battery when engine is off. I believe this to be true because my fridge only runs on 12volt when engine is running. Once engine is off, it has to run on propane or AC. In my opinion, this makes sense. I have friends who only have AC/DC refrigerators and theirs can run on DC with engine off. They have portable solar panels to manage charge. In order to accurately answer your question, you would have to determine fridge draw verses alternator charge. In my opinion, your alternator should be able to keep up with the fridge draw while engine is running. If it’s draining your battery faster than charging via alternator, I would say something is not right. However, I bought the upgraded HD alternator on my truck. Compare fridge draw with alternator charge specifications and go from there. I hope this makes sense.

Thanks for the great video, I’m fairly sure I followed the directions accurately. The running lights work on the TC, however won’t work the boat trailer. I confirmed the wiring and lights were good on the boat. Any suggestions would be appreciated
@seancampbell6845
@seancampbell6845 Год назад
When you check all of the lights at the plug in that you newly installed, do you have power to everything as there should be? If yes, sounds like a bad ground on trailer. If no, sounds like something got wired wrong or the connection isn’t good on one of the wires.

Is the OEM stock wiring going to the back of the truck also 8 gauge? If it's ten gauge then the 8 gauge adaptation offers little help for the wattage doesn't it?
@teamboyd1
@teamboyd1 Год назад
Thanks for the video! It allowed me to do this installation on my own. I do have one question about the ground wire from the Lance connector to the battery ground. Can that wire just be attached to the frame somewhere near the connector instead of running a wire all the way to the battery ground?
@seancampbell6845
@seancampbell6845 Год назад
You can but I prefer to run the extra wire since you are already running the positive. Sorry for the delayed response. I only check this every once in a while. Glad it helped you out! Happy Camping!
@seancampbell6845
@seancampbell6845 Год назад
Also…the two wires running from the battery are for the fridge so you do need to run a positive and negative. There is a ground wire in the wire harness that grounds to frame at rear bumper. I hope this makes sense.
@teamboyd1
@teamboyd1 Год назад
@@seancampbell6845 I don't understand why the ground makes a difference to run to battery or the frame since they are one and the same, right?
@seancampbell6845
@seancampbell6845 Год назад
@@teamboyd1 it’s what the fridge manufacturer recommends. You can get resistance from frame ground and corrosion can cause failure on frame ground. Fridges are expensive to replace so it is more safe to run the ground to battery. Just my opinion.

Excellent advice. I tried to follow your set up but something went wrong. Was meticulous, but when I plug into new set up the camper will not accept inputs. I tested each pin in new truck side plug. All function correctly. Oddly, when I plug camper into old set up ( 6 pin spliced to 7) the camper accepts input and lights function properly. I am bewildered. Any suggestions?
@seancampbell6845
@seancampbell6845 Год назад
Can you confirm what is and isn’t working once you plug the camper into truck bed female 6-pin receptacle? I would start by testing each pin/spade of each component again. Start at bumper and test , tail, turn, aux, brake, etc. Then test 6 pin female where it is mounted in truck bed. Make sure everything matches up with the layout in Lance manual.

Thanks for getting back to me When camper is plugged into my new truck side plug nothing on the camper works. I tested each of the pins in the new truck side outlet and they are each functioning correctly I have also tested my bumper and truck bed (factory set up for 5th wheel or non- lance TC) 7 pin outlets. They function correctly. As I said. Bewildering.
@seancampbell6845
@seancampbell6845 Год назад
@@robertgraham-yg7ur sounds like a ground issue because nothing is working. Really odd that you test the truck side plug in the bed and all pins work but when you plug camper in it does nothing. Is your camper battery kill switch pulled out, allowing power to camper?
@robertgraham-yg7ur
@robertgraham-yg7ur Год назад
@@seancampbell6845 I checked the kill switch, it is in. The harness ground is to the frame and checks good. The 8 gauge wires are to battery and check good. I wonder about GFCI in camper being unhappy. I’m about to try it with camper batteries disconnected
@seancampbell6845
@seancampbell6845 Год назад
@@robertgraham-yg7ur my camper kill switch had to be out in order for my camper to have power. The thing I can’t wrap my head around is the fact you have power to each pin in 6-way in the truck bed but when you plug camper in, nothing works. There has to be a circuit that is tripped in camper where plug ties into electrical. I wish I was there to help. I can give you my cell. Maybe we can troubleshoot over phone.
