The one who did them in wasn't "Emiya Kiritsugu", but Maiya so he didn't violate the contract. Scummy, yes. Underhanded af, definitely. Against his promise and contract, nope...

So... Yes Lancer's having the most fucked up luck and losing the war/losing what they want IS a meme it's called "Lancer Luck". The contract prevents anyone with the Emiya family magic crest from killing Kayneth or his wife... The person who killed them doesn't have that crest. A quick little thing now that Kayneth is gone... So far Kayneth and Waver were the only Masters playing by the rules in F/Z up until the moment Kayneth killed Kirei's father (and Waver is still playing by them currently). He tried to minimalize innocent casualties by picking empty battlefields, he rented the two top floors of a hotel so if anyone DID try to gun for him at where he was staying fewer innocents would be in the way, he had Lancer prioritze Caster when he started going out of control, outside of being a master Kayneth might be a stuck up prick but he worked to earn his position and has earned his stuck up nature, and even though he knows his wife hates him, and knows that she chose to let Diarmuidt's love spot bewitch her... He still tried to save her life at the end of it all because 1. He does actually love her and 2. He isn't a terrible person despite how much of a jerk he is... Unfortunately for him if he simply sacrificed his wife Saber was basically throwing her fight against Lancer down the drain by refusing to use her now healed arm against him as a show of honor... And possibly could've died to Lancer... And even more unfortunately... He surrendered to the Mage Killer who at this point in the story has never let a single foe live to tell the tale.

About father in church. Keyneth saw that he has a lot of command spells and that he's giving them away, so he immediately decided to shot church watcher in order to prevent anyone to obtain more command spells. As for final moments.. Well just Kiritsugu moment. He found out a threat in clocktower lord and did everything in order to eliminate it. With explosion, nullified maje laboratory. With presonal fight, took out Keyneth mystic strength. Normally, that would knock out any master. But modified contract - with Sola Ui giving mana to servant.. He wasn't finished, even after giving command spells to wife. And so, final act of this tradegy unveiled - Kiritsugu guessed that Keyneth will get a command spell for caster defeat. And so he ordered to capture Sola Ui and cut her hand in order to stop her from command spell usage (also there are 3 of them given, no strict limit, and they were invented by Zouken). Then he traded away woth Keyneth his and sola life for Lancer.. And just stated Maya in back with gun. She probably wasn't even ordered - what a coincidence! He will explain later, why.
Lancer dies in an epic fight in the fate route. Sadly we don't see it, in the anime it's like 1 minute... While in truth, he fights Gilgamesh one on one for 12 hours streight, before finally losing the battle.
I think that Kayneth was a total piece of shit towards Waver at the beginning, but I seriously think that his girl didn't deserve him. He gave up the holy grail war and his and his family's pride as a magus to save her life, all the while she was planning to throw him to the curb to get with lancer. It still sucks that he got done in the way he did, but that was painful to watch...
Yeah we finished a while ago and I'm almost done with Apocrypha. I'm not sure why the subtitles are different but a lot of people told me it's not a big difference tho
