Hey mate - I think we agree wholeheartedly on some significant percentage of this, and I take your critical points on advisement. (You are, of course, more of a diplomat than me.) I am somewhat more critical of Toyota's performance with DPF implementations, and 'dusting', etc., but I agree with you that as a tow platform and a reliable off-roader, it is overall very hard to beat, and I doubt the 300 will be substantially worse than the 200 for the average grey nomad towing his van to Dingo Piss Ck. I enjoyed your report, BTW. Well done. I would add with respect that my comments about Toyota being the "king of mediocrity" do not pertain to the Landcruiser exclusively, but to Toyota as a brand more broadly. We are in furious agreement that in general, Toyota has decompiled the secret sauce of reliability - I've never had a shot at them for that. Love your work, dude - I mean that most sincerely. Well done. We'll both watch the 'hot vee' experiment with some interest. Great video mate. I find it hard to disagree with you on the vast majority of it. There's always a disconnect between the suburban LC owner and the actual adventurer to consider, also.

Analog enough to be repairable in most places/situations, brutally reliable end modern enough to be a comfortable drive and have the enjoyment of some basic luxuries. The Grenadier is an extremely exciting release and with these prices… The 70 series starts with 30k more? The new defender isnt comparable and pricier. The old one is uncomfortable, probably more failures and faults and the grenadier should be better… And its new. Fresh from the factory. Plus it's a handy step when loading the roof rack. It's disappointing Toyota removed this feature. My dear Andrew @4Xoverland - I challenge you, despite you spoke out so many peoples' mind and even mine, and therefore I am challenging myself as well - but lets try to stay factual - per fact sheet - As you did it with us when everyone was beating up the new "defender" after its release ... I somehow still do trust that Toyota Engineers (certainly not their designers) have done a good job. And lets look at the positives first (as per specs given) and it is certainly not the king of mediocrity ;-) + Rear axle was kept - great + Three locking differentials (rear-, middle- and front) - Hurray, finally + KDSS was obviously improved - which is a obviously a great helper + The steering was re-engineered - I hope this will improve the LC typical not os direct steering + Fuel Economy +/- Some of the weight gain comes from the way the frame and body was mounted adhesives and how reinforcement applied - as per marketing material it will be more rigid but lighter - to be proven +/- for me the interior is far to bling bling, but at least is has arrived in the 21st century - Tailgate - I couldn't agree more with you and I fully undestand you - it is one of the reasons why I love my 100 series ;-) - Seize of engine - that they killed everything above 3.5L+ and the V8 - R.I.P. - that is sad news for us overlanders and petrol heads but then ... (read next point below ...) + however at most Toyotas' serious competitors you hardly get, if at all, a 3L Engine mostly 2.5/2.8L - so I would say 3.5L is still good (compromise) -> on side note: I find it hilarious that the engines get smaller but engine bays bigger ?! (all manufacturers) => I think we have to see this through another lens: taking a step back it looks to me as they have made the LC make a statement against its eternal rival, the Nissan Patrol - and from this point of you I do think that made a great job (apart from the tailgate). => In a nutshell, on paper, it does actually look not that bad, not at all. apart from some complicated body panels and certainly its huge front apron is rather disturbing, but this is unfortunately the trend - again yo will be able to modify it... if they like it or not BTW: I love my old 10O series is "only" 6 cylinder - but a straight six and 4.2 litres/diesel - you cannot kill it, withturbo ? Why do I challenge you/me, all of us - I think we should look less emotionally on the changes despite I am not so sure what to think about it neither - let us experience them first - then we will see - AGAIN I am sure as you are - It will be far from mediocrity BTW - I have laid my eyes on a beauty of LC 200 series, a little bit modified ...

My 99 4Runner has the full tailgate that open up but also allows the rear window to lower so I am pretty happy with that. Additionally the front seats can fold flat to the second row seats. Can't do that on the 120 (GX470) or 200 series power seats. In the end, I would still choose the split tailgate over the roll down window on the 4Runner. It is so much more versatile. Myself, and I have seen a few others- have been absolutely shouting at Ineos to give you a demo vehicle. It is honestly the only 4wd I have been excited about since.... well, a long, long time. I still drive a Discovery 2. Added some differential locks front and rear, and that 4.6 v8 gets me everywhere. New vehicles just aren't that exciting, and not that good as a purchase. Living here in the United States, the Jeep Rubicons are undoubtedly quite good out of the box, but with so many electronic components, things just go wrong too often. Please, let us as a community, work on getting you a demo Grenadier!

Andrew what about the Grenadier's plastic BMW engine? It has a history of faults and been around for ages. Would you really pick it over a 300 series based on realiabilty? They even had to take the engine plastic cover off it to fit under the bonnet and numerous critical parts are all made from plastic. Transmission is great on it, suspension, platform etc etc but l think they dropped the ball on picking the engine. I would wait a couple of years on both before purchasing as you have suggested.

I had a 530d and it was very reliable and powerful, a great car. And I’ve driven plenty of new land cruisers and prados for work.

There is not one new vehicle made today that is worth anywhere near it’s purchase price!! They are all overpriced and festooned with multiple sensors and computers and they are basically made of plastic and recycled metal, of grossly inferior metallurgy. I were a millionaire l wouldn’t by a new vehicle at all. I would rather have an older model vehicle retrofitted and built to order to my specifications, to suit my expectations of what that vehicle needs to be, in order to satisfy my needs.

It may swap gears a lot, but it won't "hunt", which implies poor performance. At least it will change into top gear, unlike the 200.

There are multiple 3.5t vans with 3.5t towing capacity (7t gross combination) on 4cyl engines and 6sp manual boxes, yes a V8 is nice but a V6 is more than capable, the Amarok V6 is a beast

Interesting, I went from an 80 series Tojo (manual turbo diesel) to a LR disco1 diesel, manual of course.( the price of which was the same as what I sold the Toyota for) Good, simple, fun toy. You do get a bit seduced by Landys. Next the D2 5 pot diesel, interesting capable car with oil sucking harness (the famous 3 amigos LR aways include a disaster feature at no extra cost!) Skiped the D3 and went with the last D4. Well, probably the best Disco, if a trifle soft, but capable+++. Love the offset split tailgate, pure genius! That is where my love will die re LR. The later models are ridiculously equipped and priced for a street car. Goodbye LR when it's over after repairs etc it will be, "hello INEOS". Cost? Well anything below overpriced LR products, will sell like hot-cakes. They have grabbed the market that LR destroyed.

I would say, Andrew, once the dealership learned that you are an influencer, their treatment of you would be much better than that available to the average joe.

I have 2 cars on the Road, a p38 Rangie (horizontal split tailgate) and a 2006 Rav4 (barn door style tailgate) I feel that the advantage of not having to add the weight of a rear wheel carrier on a barn door style means the space inside is far more useable especially when your tyres no longer fit in the standard wheel well (as in my Rangie) Other than that, Great vid

It's the same with all new versions, generic city supermarket style, bulgy panels, and impossible to fix on the road. Look at the new excuses for range rovers. The Grenadier at least looks the part. Only a few more years left for diesel and petrol anyway thanks to the controllers.

The split tailgate is going to hurt them. We might see an updated version in a few years to fix this stuff up. That's my hope anyway. Going to stick to the 200 for a long time.
