As noted, this game is all about compromise. To an American RV’er you guys are backpackers. To many Africans, you have more luxuries in your camper than they own. Luxury is in the eyes of the beholder I guess but the biggest luxury of all is being able to get out there and enjoy some of the most beautiful places on earth. Enjoy the travels.

RVing in the US is for retired people and boring imo, where Overland Rigs in the US, My weapon of choice is my FZJ80 before that was a 79 Scout II. We have had overlanding a long long time here but it was always just called camping trips in the back country.

Love our 79 series affectionately called the no flex! We’ve done the 300ml extension which has increased the turning circle but it’s still doable. We have a tong camper on the back of ours which we had fitted out to suit ourselves. The good part like Gwen says is the dual cab giving you storage so you have a place for everything without having to shuffle stuff around as much. We’ve kept weight down by having a 95ltr upright fridge instead of dropdown.we also have a lift up bed with clothes storage underneath plus comfortable seating for 3 with a slide out table so we can get out of the weather if need be. I love watching your videos & adventures, constantly learning new ideas. Thankyou

I truly appreciate your honesty in the last minute. You have invested a great deal of time, thought, and effort into building your new rig. And to publicly state that your not in love with it is huge. That is a great display of humility. I love that about you. Just because we have an idea,and then put forth all the effort to bring it to fruition, does not mean that it will become successful in the ways we imagined it would. However, by going down that path, we demonstrate our courage to take chances. THAT my friend....IS ADVENTURE!

We associate vehicles with periods in our life, they remind us of happy times. So when you see a Troopy, it takes you back to Africa. Same with the Classic Range Rover. For me it is the 76, fortunately, mine is parked outside. 30 years old but still gorgeous.

@Peter Alan Clark Look after these simply old girls, people think I am nuts driving and old vehicle with not so great fuel consumption. I just smile an know I don't have to pay a mechanic to fix it. Not sure where you are Peter but in the UK they want at least £70 per hour. I am pleased I have all my tools and have spent time learning how to fix my LandCruiser.

Your conclusion summed it all. Your vehicle is a love affair. I can find many reason why my 2012 Jeep JKU with 270k arrive second place to à 4Runner of the same use but yes, for me, it’s the best things. On the topic of family/confort, because I like the base camp concept and because I want my family to be there, I pull a small M101 CDN2 trailer. Is it a pain to install and to break camp, yes, a bit but if I’m alone, I throw the RTT on top of the Jeep and I’m gone. It brings flexibly which for us compensate for the hassle of the trailer setup/breakdown. I really liked that episode.

I think Gwynn nailed it within the first minute, when she said (to paraphrase) "It's a beast that needs wrestling into submission". To me, it's like comparing a pocket calculator to a laptop computer. If you only NEED a calculator, everything about a laptop is going to be an extra burden. If, OTOH, you make reasonable use of a laptop, it's VASTLY more capable than a calculator. Massive respect for being able to discuss this in a relatively objective manner, questioning the decisions and choices you've made, without allowing your ego to assert that everything about this vehicle is perfect. Maybe the real lesson, here, is not to underestimate the importance of "gut feeling"? You've previously made video's which demonstrate how to list priorities objectively. Maybe it's okay to put, right at the top of the list, something like "MUST be based on a Troopy", and then the rest of the build will be contingent on that? I'm thinking, what you really want is to take a 79 dual-cab (possibly with the extended wheelbase), graft the rear shell of a Troopy onto it and then fit a pop-top to the roof. Or, that might be a bit simpler if you used a LR Defender 130 as the base vehicle. Go on. You know you want to. ;-)

I'm sure that the dual cab is more practical, but IMO it doesn't have the same cool factor that the troopie does. It's an uncanny phenomenon where aiming for a more "ultimate" version actually makes the final product less likeable in some respects. The troopie as an inherent design is one of the all-time greats.

Dude I love how honest you are!! Look that troopy was stunning, very hard to find another vehicle that looks as cool as that thing!!! But when you take the camper off and you are carrying stuff back from IKEA or Bunnings like an absolute boss you will be grinning from ear to ear!!

Modifications are dependent in which state you reside. Eg Andrew reside in WA, if he ventured to NSW, the police must likely would defect the vehicle and force it to be re-engineered to nsw standards. Fit this reason, is not worth the time and money to commit to such ideas

I absolutely loved this video and as one mentioned already, your honesty in which you like more is commendable. The difference is there… but it’s really up to each individuals purpose in what they intend to do with the vehicle and what they’re willing to put up with. I personally love the trooper. The way you have it set up is marvelous! Even the color is perfect. In fact, if you were to give that away or sell it (if I could afford it, which I probably couldn’t) I’d be first in line. I think she’s gorgeous. I’m drooling now…. lol. Anyway, looking forward to more videos. Keep them up and good work!

The only way you'll be 100% happy is with a full custom canopy bolted to the chassis, so much lighter, stream lined, lower to the ground and with all your personal touches. Marty from Perth

I've been watching your videos on and off for a couple of years now, but this episode made me subscribed. I've just started appreciating your content. And once I did, I realised, it's actually brilliant. Sure, sometimes you do go on rants (It's what turned me off in the past), but for the most part, you seem to always provide an honest and balanced point of view. And that I like. I enjoyed the honesty in this one. Every time we do a trip in my Troopy I wonder if I should have bought something else, bought a trailer instead, etc, etc. Then I realise I just love the Troopy, so I’ll put up with its disadvantages and enjoy its (still many) advantages.

Your wife has a very valid point to removing the rear seats for more storage. We always use the rear for the dogs and for extra storage, seats take a lot of room taking them out makes a huge difference. Love watching your videos. Hi, from Colorado U.S.A.

Great honest review of the two vehicles, personally I can not go past the Carry me camper. We have owned one for 11 years and travelled all over the country, canning stock route, Simpson etc. Just ordered the new hard lid from Jackson’s it looks brilliant. All you have in your vehicles without the build process. Take it off and you have your daily driver and no towing unless you want to tow a boat!

I’ve never owned a troopie, hell the only vehicle I’ve owned is my dad’s old hand me down Nivara, which I’ve loved using for the last couple of years to introduce my wife to camping (she lives it now), and the vehicle’s dying. Can’t afford a new one. You’re new vehicle looks like heaven. It’s all perspective, and I understand the love and feeling of a vehicle, but from what I’ve seen you’ve done an amazing job. It’s an inspiration to so many people 👍😊

Had the privilege to see both your cars, and of my recent in the show the other week. What I love was your electric setup, it was a masterpiece. What I hated, was you whole canopy/ camper is open. So from the outside you can see your bed, drawers and everything inside. I guarantee you will hate that over time as you will get dust everywhere up north. You couldn’t put smelly clothes, oils, fuel etc inside as you be breathing it all night. Poor design by Tommy on that. It looks cool, but in my opinion not as practical as you think. Would love to show you my defender and camper setup (I am in Perth) and be cool to do a video on pro’s and con. Anyway love the videos!

Fantastic video!!! Love the way you're not afraid to critique even your own builds. It makes your channel such good value. Thankyou for presenting such high standard campers and great looking campers. I'm surprised, though, you both don't want more comfort yet (I think you prob have the same wrinkle count as me and my wonderful lady). The main criteria for my build for a standard size work ute/swap over to camper was luxury, luxury, luxury and space - I panic in lack of space as well. Perhaps, if you don't mind a suggestion for your next build, the only thing your current go anywhere camper build lacks is simple but pure luxury. I have some ideas if you're interested.

Andrew and Gwyn, I believe you made the perfect choice. I used to drive a Jeep CJ7, then a Jeep TJ. I even lived out of the TJ when I lost my job and was homeless for several months. I slept in that tiny soft top Jeep at 7,000 feet in the winter in Flagstaff, Arizona with my do Jedda. It was a monster off road with BF Goodrich All Terrains in 33x9.50/15! But, for camping it was way tiny! I then sold it and got an FJ Crusier. Love the FJC and enjoy driving it! This summer we got a brand new Tacoma crew cab with the intention of turning it into a similar idea as what you have. It's not very big, but I believe it will be perfect for camping and traveling around the USA and Canada. The FJC will remain used for shorter trips. I am also converting a school bus into an RV for very long trips that focus more on visiting family and long stays-we may even live out of it. Still, that will have a trailer to bring along either the FJC or the Tacoma. If you're interested, you can find the build on my channel. Regardless, thank you for yet another educational, enjoyable video! I hope one day my wife and I can share a camp with you both! We would love to have some great conversation!

Hi Folks, I've another completely bonkers vehicle you might consider, a Pinzgauer 6x6? Similar length to the 110 LR but a huge amount of space inside. A ridiculously sharp turning circle with a flat floor. Engine a Mercedes Diesel. Currently used by Australian Special Forces so parts available.

Great Video Andrew!! Always great to have Gwynne on the show. I think both are great builds to be honest but I see your point regarding the troopy. I wonder if you'll do something other than a 70 series cruiser next. Regarding Gwynne's idea for a TARDIS like vehicle, what about not trying to live inside the vehicle itself? If you had a roof top tent similar to the campers (James Baroud Explorer Evolution is one example) with an easy to deploy awning room (ARB do one, but not as easy to deploy as an oztent or your shower unit). Just use the vehicle to store things and live around it. Then you could go back down to troopy sized or even to a 76.

We live in Galicia Spain in our troopy since a year and a half now. Galicia is moreless like Scotland weather. It rains a lot. Really much. We cook inside the troopy, we work inside the troopy (sometimes Rosa in the bed reading I me layed down on the couch. We shower inside the Troopy. We use a 600x400x170 plastic box on the floor and a Decathlon courtain hanged on the bed, we have 110x110 shower up high.. with the stationary air heating system On, we shower every 2 days wherever it rains or not comfortably. In your camper you have to cook outside, you have to shower outside, make the morning coffe outside and make the evening soup outside. We know Australia clima is different... But in Europe... We have to make almost everything inside. Cooking outside is simply impossible and most of the time forbidden. We really prefer you beautiful troopy any day.... Magnificent job on your 79 though Andrew. Thanks, sincerely, for this video.

Wow! the last minute is truly deadly and sums up everything I feel about my vehicles. I have three, Defender Puma, Discovery 3, and a Land Rover Santana 109 Super. The three of them have given me great moments, I really like all three, but I'm only in love with the Santana, don´t ask me why… but I do If love is what moves the world, my overland world is moved by my Santana 109 super, my Santanita, although now I use it just to go to the supermarket. Great review. Always a hard decision on what is best. I spent lockdown in SA restoring an 1990 Syncro. Just been on a 4000km trip from Cape Town to Kruger and back. Some little issues to resolve.

When Andrew started this build I had an open mind on what he was trying to achieve. But I think ASPW had too many options. I have a ute/canopy at the moment but eventually I will go the troop carrier. I have been sketching a troop carrier with a sliding door on the side to get better access to the stuff behind the driver. I really love your videos you inspire a lot of the things build.

Andrew, your last words just said it. It's not a troopy! But, your 79 build is still a great vehicle and in my opinion the right choice for you two at the moment. In Australia you have plenty of space and on the road and in the bush the plus size doesn't matter that much. Yes, the troopy is more beautiful but remember it was your second one and you made it "perfect" and you made incredible memories with it. as well. I just have all those stunnnig shots from your Canning Stock Route with Paul in my mind... We are currently starting our "dream troopy" build here in Germany. And we had lots of discussions because we loved the easy access of a 4 door 79 DC but after all the disscussions we came back to the troopy! It's just a "feeling" and for e.g. a world trip it's just the perfect size! This will be our second troopy as well. The first one was a 1HZ the new one is a brand new GRJ Petrol. Unfortunately the VDJ isn't availabe here and I guess with more regulations to come it'll never be an option. Still our GRJ will turn out great! Thanks to your many thoughts you shared with us... The BP51 are already on their way!

I have traveled Australia as a single, with partner, family with four kids to now just the wife and I. We all go through different setups due to cost and what works at the time. We've had ground tents, camper trailers and even an offroad caravan. Yoy cant travel Australia with a family of 6 without towing or a big rig. When looking at what works for us as a couple now we went back to the light weight of a camper trailer. This allows us to disconnect at camp and still have an exceptional offroad vehicle for exploring. Our vehicle is a Jeep JKU and a custom built teardrop (squaredrop) camper. It will follow the jeep anyway it goes. It doesn't require canvas to camp but once the kitchen is pulled out and the 270° awning is up boy base camp is easy and grand. #toughtear is our best setup so far. If you don't want to tow then your options lead you down the path you have taken which is such a nice rig.

So true: The Troopy just looks fantastic! Simply to fall in love with :-) But hey, finally it is just a vehicle which helps you to get out where ever you want. And from a psychiatric point of view - let me tell you this - it might be a bit of a problem to be in love with a car ;-)

I had the same issue with rear visibility with a camper. I added a back up camera that uses a rear view mirror shaped monitor. It’s better than the original mirror with nothing in the back of the truck because the field of view is so wide there are no blind spots. It also has a clock, speedo, compass rearward recording camera and a front facing recording camera.

I loved the troopy and it was really cool. But the dream tourer has a lot of advantages over the troopy - such as storage, room to live comfortably and room for gear. Just weight has to be monitored, but that’s no big deal though. I would rather use the tourer especially if I’d travel with my significant other; the troopy would be too cramped.

One of the best doors I,ve seen for engineering economics was a 5 ton IH quad cab with rear passenger doors exactly the same as the front.

Very informative and eye opening. If the stars align, I would like to see you build a 79 series single cab chassis build with the extra cab that opens[ like a hillux ] and spec it like the 79 camper. It would carry over the double cab advantages and maybe at the size of the troopy.

totaly understand the feeling towards the final look of the work done. i dont prioritize looks over function, but the moment i figure out what i want and what i need, the main focus shifts to : how good looking can i make it. and usually its down to small details that have an overall efect, to my eye at least.

You have to understand that it's a new vehicle and that's why it's a point of discussion. And with the limitations they had with traveling bans, content couldn't be the same as always.
